New sub! Well done. The bravest thing is exposing yourself to other people like that. Well done. I did my first mountain wild camp for 40 years recently. Didn’t have the wind/weather issues, but it can be emotionally challenging. Imagination can be a problem! But you did it! Can’t take that away from you!

Thank you so much for your comments. Yea it was certainly a night to remember, to be honest I’m glad the weather was so poor, because I’m fairly sure that’s as rough as I’m going to get it 😂. The second time I went out, the weather & camp was amazing 😊

Hello my friend, we have a saying over here that says, "It takes two weeks to get your legs and lungs" This is what the mustering Shepards use to say. This was of course constantly climbing the hills every day. I'm 75 and have been in the mountains all my life (since 7 years old) as a guide and bushcraft instructor. I am still in the mountains and still carrying 20kgs. This is not bragging but it is conditioning. Do it enough and you will become stronger in your limbs and wind. First time solo can be daunting and takes a lot of mental strength. It's not the load, that is the problem but your fitness level, once you gain the strength you will find the load will seem lighter. We may not have the problems over here that you perceive, we have vast forest that you can hide yourself in for months at a time, if you so wished, and not see another person. I admire your spirit and wish you the best for your future camps. Cheers from the mountains of NZ 😀😀

Thank you for your comments. I agree I’m not used to backpacking, I’m used to hiking with a daysack which is as you know, a lot lighter. I will get fitter the more I do this. Thanks again for your lovely comments & please consider subscribing 😊 thank you ❤

Thank you so much for that. I'm going to be homeless in a couple of weeks and instead of sleeping in shop doorways I have spent my money on some kit and have decided its better to go for a really long walk lol x I'm so very scared x so thank you for your stoic perspective x you have given me strength and hope x thank you x

@@alison8186 Hello Alison, sorry to hear of your predicament that you find yourself in. It is better to be on the move and less depressing. by moving you will gain strength and your spirits will be lifted. also you will be exposed to opportunity. Over here in NZ the old Māori have a phrase, and it is short and sweet. 'Kia Kaha' which means "Stay Strong". So stay strong my friend and all will be well. ATB cheers from the mountains of NZ 😀😀

Thanks 😊 The wind peaked at 50mph gusts, which didn’t really bother me much, it was just the inconvenience of the noise & the fact that it was the first time using that tent, so too many variables 😂. I agree you can never be fully prepared. Thank you for watching & taking the time to comment. ❤️

"Not much of a wild camping video" ??? It was bloody great! That was some baptism of fire. The mountains can be scary places but they are also great healers: physically, mentally and emotionally. I came across your video by pure chance and nearly switched off after a few minutes but so glad l watched all theway through. l got into wild camping later in life after retirement, l wish l'd strarted years ago and like you l found the first camp a challenge and like you l learned a lot about myself; l made many, many mistakes, but l learned from them - l still make mistakes (not as many) and l'm still learning. Your video was honest, funny and emotional - especially towards the end. I totally agree with Mountainman Tararua's comment below, Well done you.

Thank you for your comments. I’m used to the mountains but not in the ‘wild camping’ sense, my family & I have hiked most of the high mountains in the Lake District National Park so this was a natural progression for me & in a way I’m glad the weather was poor as I think it helped my mental health in ways a calm night couldn’t. Thank you for your support. 😊 PS: look out for the next one in a couple of weeks, it’s going to be an epic adventure 😊

Thank you for the video, watching it brought back memories for me. Back in July 2019 I done my first solo wild camp up in the hills on the West coast of Scotland. I had just lost my German Shepherd dog, she passed away not long before, and when I done the wild camp I felt massively alone and uncomfortable. I was feeling crushed inside but I knew I had to do something to try and change how I was feeling. A wild camp seemed like the thing to do, I'm glad I did it but at the time, I could relate to how you were feeling on that hill, you had thoughts about packing up and going home. I regularly feel anxious about things in general, doing things to try focus your mind (like you put on a brew in the video) can help a lot. I'm planning on doing another wild camp this summer in Galloway Forest Park, I'm watching camping videos a lot. Like you said in the video, I feel I was made for the outdoors so I need to get out there and do it, regardless of fears. I'm going to find a spot, pitch up, get a fire going and spend the night reading my Bible and touching base with my Creator. Not a bad way to spend the night.

Thank you for your lovely reply, you get it, you’re right, I regularly do day hikes in the mountains but it never feels enough, so wild camping was the obvious next step for me, I have put this experience down as a ‘successful failure’ Anxiety is a big obstacle I’m trying daily, to overcome & will continue to face my fears out there. Thank you again for your kind words and support 😊

Wow a very honest video on KZbin, makes a very nice change. If you watch the end of your video first you can see that you know the area well and the confidence was coming out, so well done. Thanks for being so open. Just take things slowly, learn to calm your mind down , remember your statistically more in peril in a town or city than ever in the mountains so please don't worry so much . Don't over think. It all takes time, also don't be hard on yourself, you done really well, and don''t give up or you will regret it, the outdoors is a great place to clear the mind from anxiety. I have just subbed so as i can see how you get on in the future. Again well done. Bill.

Congrats on your first solo camp. I think you did great! Yes, there is room for improvement. But you live and learn! I learn from every adventure. This activity is realy healthy for your mental strenghts. I love the unsuspected. It makes for good stories and challenges. In challenges is the opportunity to grow. Keep your baseweight as low as you can. When selecting gear, I select gear by weight and size. Caught in the night by a storm I prepare for the worst. I will get fully dressed and start to pack what I can. So that in case that the tent rips, or I can scramble of the mountain if and when needed. Good fortune on your next adventures.

Thanks for the pack weight advice. Reference ‘bailing’ I was fully dressed & all equipment was packed in my rucksack before I attempted to sleep in case the tent gave up. I also had an ‘escape route’ back to the car in case. I did a recce of the terrain beforehand. 😊

As well as reviewing what goes in your pack, experience walking with a fully weighted pack will improve endurance. If you aren’t used to it then it feels like it’s too much but plan some mixed mileage hikes with the pack and you will adjust and the walks will improve.

the phoxx 2 really is a cracking tent, it is in my opinion bomb proof may not be the warmest but I've never had condensation issues or has the wind gave it any issues, I've seen tents far more expensive than it collapse under the wind and the phoxx is still going. I'm the opposite of you I think, when I'm alone in the mountains usually I've taken steps to tell people where I will be and my plans, so when I'm out the further away from people I get the more zen I feel. but if I'm at a camp site or near a settlement every wee noise in the night will wake me up and I feel far more anxious in general haha. going up hill is a skill in its self I believe, while I still find it really difficult i have noticed myself being able to get up hills easier, stopping less. getting to the tops of hills I've done before a smidge quicker, while I've got aways to go I can see there is a sort of progression and its like everything else the more you do it the better you'll do. congrats on your first solo wild camp ! looking forward to seeing more in the future.

Thanks for your comments. I love the PHOXX tent, after this, it will always be special to me I think. I’m used to day hikes, hiked many mountains and like you said, they get easier the more you do, so I hope & expect this aspect of my outdoor journey goes the same way. It’s always going to be a learning curve every time & you have to start somewhere, like I said on the video, we all make mistakes & as long as you learn from them you’ll grow. Love the video, so glad you made it through the night on your first wild camp! It can definitely be scary as you know, and I struggle with anxiety and, as you mentioned in the video, it really does mess with your mind and you do start overthinking dark thoughts and awful scenarios as it really does play tricks on you. I've had many issues with this, especially lately, but I'm just chalking that down to winter wild camping, which I'm starting to think isn't for me 😂 So happy it's spring now! I was up on Calf Crag back in early October and I had 45-50mph winds just like you did, and mine was only forecast for 20mph at the time! I know exactly how scary that can be, it started to lift up a corner of my tent! I actually ended packing up and finding a slightly more sheltered area on the crag to pitch, and doing that in the pitch black & howling winds wasn't easy 😳 But safer than descending the crag in darkness and rain (it was a steep, rocky climb). Anyway, you did it and well done, most people won't ever even give it a go, and it takes so much bravery and determination, and I believe that despite feeling the the fear and anxiety, doing things (safely) like this helps build a stronger mind.

Aww thank you so much for your comments, I felt I had to be completely honest & hopefully inspire others who feel the same. That wind was brutal & I kept checking the pegs to make sure they were intact. I thought about going down but there was several steep drops around me, so I felt it safer to stay put & I am so glad I did. It will be one that I’ll never forget & like you said ‘make you stronger’ ❤️

Well done on making it through the night, it didn't look easy for you, but I'm sure now you know what to expect you can move forward with a little more confidence, as for your pack I think you were carrying far too many items you didn't need- a water bottle (use your own drinking bottle) a heated jacket (more batteries to carry) and shower gel (I'm lost on this one 😂) but well done and I hope you make it to many more camps 👍🏻

Maybe next time, especially when it's wet weather, take a small tarp with you, so then at least you could be sitting outside, enjoying the views, making a small fire and not be stuck in your tent the whole time? Just a suggestion.

@hikingwiththeshackletons 5 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comments, however, as I said in the film it was a complete whiteout, it was raining heavily and 50mph winds! So a tarp and fire would not have been conducive, secondly a fire is not permitted or a sensible idea.

@@hikingwiththeshackletons Not sure I understand your response - I wasn't being critical ! You did great, How many people choose to get outside their comfort zone and face their fears like this? Whether those fears resonate in the same way with anyone else is immaterial; we all have different ones and everything is personal. What I can say from experience (facing this particular fear and other activities which have scared me much much more) is that the old adage that there is nothing to fear but fear itself is spot on.
