In today's video:
I attempt to conquer a lingering fear, deciding whether to revisit a running route and distance, which took me out of running for over 3 months with injury, the last time I attempted it. My ultra marathon training is into week 17 now, and the plan calls for a 28km long run. I have the option of a simple, former railway route, or venturing back into the hills that previously left me a broken shell of a man/runner...

That was nothing short of heroic Mark. So much mud at the beginning and the hail. I think those passing car drivers must have thought " That's one tough (but stupid) guy. Well done on completing the whole thing: respect. Didn't see myself in the like over 65 stats at the start like.

Cheers mate. I'll take tough but stupid. It sounds pretty accurate 😄👍🏻 I think KZbin must class you as middle aged then. Maybe it uses fitness age rather than actual age 🙂💪

Well I had to check I wasn’t a middle aged man and nope…deffo not….great video. Recognised all the spire ultra route and also where I went wrong!! I went straight on instead of up the wee road to belland lane. Made it a lot harder on myself lol!! Oh and get yourself some waterproof socks..work a treat. I tried Hemy,

It's always worth checking lol. These KZbin stats are so confusing 😄 I keep thinking of trying water proof socks but haven't ever "taken the plunge" . Thanks for the tip! That wee lane is also pretty steep and exhausting, but there is a water station and some volunteers to cheer you on your way when you reach the top 👍🏻

😂😂 I had no idea I was a middle aged man!!!! It has been a couple of years since my last physical so maybe something has changed!!😂😂 "I've always wanted to navigate through a swamp in the hail!!" 🤣🤣SO TRUE, we had no idea we could ever actually do such things before we started long-distance trail running!! Yep the weather here has also taken a turn for the worse too, that's for sure, cold, wet and windy again, though I've been stuck in bed with bronchitis after waiting shivering wet and cold for an hour after my last trail race!! Won't make the mistake of leaving my stuff in a friend's car again... I thought she would finish only 15min behind me!🤦🏻‍♀🤦🏻‍♀ I think early on most of us made the error of pushing the distances without enough adaption time in between, ending up with runner's knee, shin splints, strained hamstrings, Achilles tendinitis, plantar fasciitis, etc, etc!! It's a steep learning curve the first few years, and I was fortunate enough to come across Run Smarter with Brodie Sharpe, to whom I credit my 6300km last year totally injury free!! Isn't it amazing the difference only 2 years of training makes... it's really a lesson to BE PATIENT, just keep plugging on and get educated according to science, NOT what "everyone" says!! And YES I noticed that too for the Trabuco Max 1 and 2, they do indeed shed water well and not only warm up again very quickly after taking a plunge, but they loose that extra water weight relatively quickly too, something you really notice on the steep hills during a race!!

😂 KZbin knows more than we do, apparently! I'm hoping for some ok weather tomorrow when I head into the Peaks again, for a 35km run. I'm pretty nervous! Sorry to hear about the bronchitis, Bev. All that waiting around in the cold can't have helped. You need some faster friends! That list of beginner injuries brings back some horrible memories lol. 6300km though, that's just mind-boggling. Well done! I'll be putting the Trabucos to the test again tomorrow. Huge climbs, various terrain, including bogs, roads and most things in between. I'll take the camera and capture some of the 'fun' lol. Hope you're feeling better :)

Can't believe you're 17 weeks into this now - where has that time gone! I'm completely comfortable with my middle agedness and will actively seek out the comfortable chair and moan about how things aren't as good as they used to be 😂 Hay is definitely in the barn now. Just keep yourself out of trouble!

Aw mate, that did make me chuckle 😂😂😂 … like honestly like, actually like laughed out loud like 😂 On a more serious note how did you cure your runners knee, went out last week and ended up with a mild dull ache in my right knee, think I’ve caught it early but kind of nervous about trying to run on it again and possibly making it flare up again, hence all the extra cycling and walking. Good to see your training is going from strength to strength 💪🏼
@markg99
@markg99 2 ай бұрын
😄👍🏻 Glad you liked this one mate! I've had runner's knee twice now. The first time, that I talk about in this video, it was about 3 months before I was confidently and regularly running again. I rested, walked, tried a little test run now and then, saw a physio, whose advice was to gently keep doing what I could manage, avoiding hilly routes. He also showed me how I was slightly over striding, which is when I spent a lot of time working on my form, and trying the pose method. Not sure any of that is what I'd recommend. The next time I got it, I did some foam rolling and found a painful knot in my quad near the knee. Gave that a few good sessions of quite intense rolling and it soon cleared up. The tight muscle pulls the knee cap out of its groove so it hurts abd rubs on bone when you run. So either take it easy for months or root out the tight spot and work that out. Best of luck with it 👍🏻

@@adabsurdum3314 that's really good going, keeping up the gym and running. I'd love a sub 20 5k, though speed work really makes my legs sore, and it takes days to feel recovered. I'll try easing into it once my ultra marathon is done. Best of luck battling the drink, and getting that sub 20 👍🏻
