In today's video:
I discuss the most dangerous part of ultra marathon training, giving my thoughts on when things are most likely to go wrong, and injuries are likely to occur.
I also take you along on an 8km trail run on a muddy day, on the local trails around Chesterfield, and revisit my old nemesis along the river by the fields off Dark Lane and Little Morton Road, North Wingfield.

Starting with a fasted 8 km run in messy trails? You're a true trail warrior, Mark! It's easy to feel invincible until nature (or a sneaky tree) reminds us to stay humble, hehe. Loved the reminder about the little things - sleep, hydration, foam rolling. It's all about balancing the hard runs with good self-care. Here's to avoiding those sneaky trees and staying injury-free. Keep up the awesome work! Can't wait for your next adventure!

Thanks, Mihai! :) I should probably include "not balancing on dangerous looking trees" to my list of things to avoid when training! I had fun putting this video together. Just trying to get my next adventure down to a reasonable video length - it's a bit of an epic!

Wise words here, Mark. The cross training and diet get us to a place where we can perform our best. Never let it slip. This is the first running video I've watched in 5 weeks, and it was a good one. Your wail as you slipped got a chuckle out of me! 😆

Mark, yes, the ego can get in the way sometimes. Always stay humble and grateful for every day! Cheers.

Indeed, Reto. Sometimes it's the ego, and sometimes just that stubborn will to stick to the plan and muscle through, when the sensible option would be to back off (probably ego in disguise!). I'm learning slowly, as I get more experience. Thanks! :)

Best Vlog of the series so far. You're clearly using your week off to dabble with editing tools and techniques. Very wise words. As Dylan himself put it, `you'll find out when you reach the top, you're on the bottom'.

Thanks a lot. Sincere praise and a Dylan quote is a fine package indeed. I did try a few things out with the editing. It's all a work in progress but it's good fun to learn about.

I really like the structure of this video! Did it disappoint? no. Was it boring? no. I think all the topics you talked about are such important things to consider when training for an ultra, I do agree it is your mind that is the most dangerous part of Ultra training haha when it is in a good place or a bad place. Awesome job on keeping up with your training Mark!

Thanks a lot, Jen :) It's so good when a video just comes together better than I expected. I often do the advice in videos to remind myself what I should be doing. I should probably re-watch this one a few times over the coming weeks!

Yes, yes, yes! 100% agree with you Mark. I have been in that complacent place before with my ultra training. Things were going well, I felt invincible, and I really wasn't taking care of myself between runs including poor nutrition, not letting little pains heal, neglecting sleep, and also pushing too hard on certain runs. As a result I got injured, and it was catastrophic for my training and I also felt pretty stupid for having made such a 'rookie' mistake. All learning for now though. Great insight sir 👍

Sleep and rest, are probably 2 of the most underrated or overlooked part of any training regiment
@markg99
@markg99 8 ай бұрын
Cheers, Craig! I sometimes say these things on camera to remind myself to follow the advice. It's so easy to slip back into bad habits, especially when the dreaded complacency slips in. Hope your running's going well mate :)
@markg99

Sleep is one of those things that sounds really easy to get a handle on, but then when it comes to it, it's also easy to just stay up a bit longer and eat into that valuable recovery time.

Absolutely! I thought it was just me, so I didn't mention it in the video. Dan-dreaming I call it when I'm out there, wistfully thinking about my KZbin heroes, whilst risking life and limb, blundering over tree roots 😬

This is so true, and something that I’d done so many times you’d think I would’ve learned my lesson 😳🤦🏻‍♂️ but alas, here I am again with a dodgy knee and zero chance of running for the foreseeable future, on the plus side my squat rack thingy arrived today so time to put in some serious rehab 💪🏼

Solid advice and a well timed reminder for me! Out of interest, what do you use to record the videos? You seemed to be able to clip it to your head when getting across those 'incosinderate' trees 🤣

I have to remind myself of these things as much as anything! Glad it came at a good time for you too 👍🏻 It's hard to tell from the video but I was actually risking life and limb, holding the gopro on a stubby handle (it opens out into a little tripod when needed), so I only had one arm for balance 😬 Luckily those inconsiderate trees didn't manage to knock me in the water this time! 👍🏻😄

Why start the video off with strobing in your intro?
@markg99
@markg99 9 ай бұрын
Apologies, I didn't know that I had. There was an effect called flashback in the editing software, and the intro clip was a flashback, so it seemed fitting. I'll be sure to avoid this in future. Sorry about that.

Hi mark any tips on warm up exercises before run
@markg99
@markg99 9 ай бұрын
Hi :) I will do a video about my warm ups at some point during this training. It varies, depending how I'm feeling, and sometimes I don't do any exercises before a shorter or easier run. I'll link to two videos that feature some exercises I really like. I tend to pick a mixture of these and maybe a few others, depending how I feel. I don't spend ages doing all of them though. This one from Ben Parkes is a good start: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXqUmnuHiK2Ch6c This is a strength training video I found recently, and I like doing some of these exercises before a run, as they really get the glute and thigh muscles engaged and working: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpzMhK2fa9aCj68 Of course, I'm a runner, not a coach so this is just the stuff I like to do. All the best :)
