During MLB strike in 1981 the LA Times did a front page above the fold article about a pitcher that played for Camarillo Kings in the Western Softball Congress by the name of Mark Smith. He was clocked at 102mph. As I recall Ty Stofflet was also clocked around 102. Ty had an article about him in Sports Illustrated.

I remember that... my brother Alan Rohrback played on that team. They went all that way that year
@vonmilash8232 жыл бұрын
I never witnessed it, but legend has it that in his prime, a Canadian chucker named Brad Underwood was clocked at 104. Regardless, even 82 from 46 feet (40 after the hop) is like 100+ from 60 feet. Then add the up or down aspect from the rise, it's nearly impossible to hit. You swing and hope. A lot of choppers in the dirt.
@dookiehoser3051 Жыл бұрын
@vonmilash823 there is a man out of Brussels Ontario name ty sebastian who throws around 82. He's almost unhittable. I just shorten up the swing and hopefully find a hole. It's the change up at 65 tho that's so nasty after seeing 80+
@B_Estes_Undegöetz9 ай бұрын
I get the feeling now that these reports were always MLB “equivalent speed” that got reported back in the day regarding fast pitch softball pitchers. Because I search hi and low for video evidence or real data reports from real studies of these guys being conducted with modern equipment (the kind that was / is used to study professional baseball pitchers) that show these 100mph + speeds. They don’t exist. All these 100 mph softball pitcher reports are likely apocryphal, and based on the common US assumption that pitching speeds should be converted to MLB equivalents in order to make sense to US readers and listeners.

He's pitching from I say 46 feet. Now in the 70s I have seen some men fast pitch softball and they were clock at around 77 to 82. This was the traditional softball pitching. But men pitch from 46 Landed about 5 feet out. The ball was in the mitt before I even took a breath. They need to bring this back. Men softball fast pitch. It was fast and some of those hitters could take it to the moon.
@kardla11 жыл бұрын
You're right. After the pitch at 1:47 the ump clearly (and correctly) indicates 3-2. Then there's a foul, then a ball (should be a walk). The ump again indicates 3-2 (haha) and then the better takes a 3rd strike next pitch.

How long has this rule been around? The pitcher being able to hop? (We called this a crow hop) When I played, your trail foot had to stay on the mat/ground. During my playing days if we were allowed to pitch this way, more guys would be pitching 85mph as a standard pitch.

Sorry bud, you're wrong. They were using radar guns to time pitches back in the 70s. I recall a pitcher from Tulsa named Roy Burleson who routinely threw at just over 100 mph. He played a good part of his career for Springfield, Mo. teams. A couple of pitchers in St. Joe, Mo. where I played topped out at or over 100. A young pitcher from Savannah, Mo. was timed on the University of Missouri campus, while he was a student there throwing over 100. He played for several State and National championship teams in St. Joe. I watched a few games at the National ASA tournament in St. Joe and saw several pitchers who were said to throw the ball at 100 mph. At the distance of 46.5 feet away, that ball sure looks like a BB coming at you.
