Man, I love you Karl. Kind enough to make tea for all your co-workers and even a contractor who cleans up after your colleagues, and even went above your boss's head to make sure it was okay to give the cleaning lady tea because it's the nice thing to do. I despise penny-pinchers who are so stingy that a teabag and a bit of hot water is too expensive to give to people who are important to the business. Treat your employees and colleagues right and they'll be loyal and dependable, and that includes outside contractors who help you out.

There is a story (you can find it in Those Devils in Baggy Pants, by Carter Ross) of American paratroopers in WWII who needed help from British tanks. They were afraid they wouldn't get it, because it was close to tea time. However, the tanks did come help them, but immediately afterwards, they parked and made tea.

The crew always demanded to go home everyday by 5:30, but George wanted to stay on to get as much finished as possible. So what they did was to have a vote as to whether or not to stay on and 9 times out of ten George and co would loose the vote to the British crew

IcantSignIn you know... you might be onto something there. Although, it does become something of a toss up for me then. On the one hand, I rather loathe inefficiency. On the other, taking breaks every once in a while does help keep focus. Plus, it’s kind of tradition. Tea time is break time. Doesn’t need to be that long though really, five minutes will do it. Actually, you might be able to get away with just drinking a cuppa during periods of inactivity if you’re in a service job, or as you work if it’s a desk job. On a side note: why do Americans drink so much coffee?

@Nub93 well its tough to say since none of us know the true cause behind the tea breaks, wether it was due to lacking leadership skills of cameron or lazy workforce. however in Camerons defence he did have an increadibly stressfull task of helming an 80 million dollar movie production, and finishing it in only 80 or so days. having your main workforce taking random breaks every hour when time and money are so limited is ridiculous and implausible if the task at hand is to be completed. Now your idea of perfomance bonuses and motivational campaigns is a positive and probably healthy way of dealing with a crisis between worker and management, the money tightness of the movie would 100% rule that out, and no long term mending between the two parties would ever be plausible due to the short deadline of the movie.

Karl, I used to be a supermarket cleaner for an external company, I had two regular stores, they were both ends of the spectrum. One treated me okay but was very impersonal, they were a new store so I was their first and only cleaner, they weren't that great with their own staff so I didn't expect much. The second shop however, was absolutely amazing and the reason I stayed in the job longer than I should have, not only did they consistently make me feel like one of the staff rather than an external, they invited me to things like the staff Xmas meal+party! It really does mean a lot, working those kind of jobs can be very, very fucking lonely, people like you made my day
