You'd think an arrow to the face would be a death sentence or at least cause a huge amount of pain. What you would not expect would be someone trying to simply sleep it off.

When I was working in retail we had big boxes full of pins and tags, supposedly with separate boxes for either but obviously things got mixed up. For this reason I was always careful getting tags out of the tag box because you could never be sure that there weren't some pins mixed in. One of my colleagues took a different approach and just mashed his hand into the tag box, repeatedly getting stabbed in the hands by pins, then loudly complaining that "there shouldn't be pins in the tag box!" And we were like, yeah, sure there should be be but there always are so like, just assume there are and don't mash you hands into the tag box.

I think both of the Japanese warriors Karl mentioned are featured in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, which got adapted into the Dynasty Warriors games. Used to have a really bad recurring planter wart on my foot and had to have the cluster frozen with liquid nitrogen in the ER 3 times before it finally made its piece. As a result I have an ocd about my feet being exposed and can't even wear flip flops or anything without wanting to crawl out of my skin. And my psyche didn't like the experience very much either, I had recurring dreams about it for months. Content warning for anyone squeamish The dream took place in my living room, while I was playing skyrim on the ps4. I would finish talking to a blacksmith or something and feel an itch on my foot, and when I look down at my bare foot and the pad under my big toe, I see the wart cluster has not only come back but nearly doubled in size, and has weird hairy tentacles coming out of it and squirming around. For some reason I put the controller charging cord near it and the tentacles latch onto it like it's making tsaheylu with the cord. I start to apply some force but it resists, then I go full force and attempt to yank the whole thing out, but wake up as soon as my skin starts to tear. Sorry.

Karl, I do speak (enough) Japanese and your pronunciation was better than usual. Just fine. Also I've had the image of Kamakura Gongoro Kagemasa on my wall for some years. ...Well technically it is a woodblock print of a kabuki of Ichikawa Danjuro IX's portrayal of him in the play Shibaraku. Probably around the 1895 production. Legend holds that he fought for something like two days straight after being shot but before resting. But about what you guys were saying about this story being retold in Japan... I worked in a ramen shop (In California) for a little while, and the owners were this Japanese family who didn't speak much English. Pretty sure I got hired because I wrote my name in Katakana when they had trouble pronouncing it (never mispronounced it again) and I could deal with the American clientele. There was this multimedia art piece on the wall made collaboratively by the family. One day I recognized one of the faces drawn in marker on the piece as being Kamakura Gongoro Kagemasa's makeup in that Shibaraku portrayal I mentioned before. I asked the owner's wife who it was, even though it was pretty unmistakable, but she basically shrugged and told me it was a samurai. I brought up Kamakura, but neither she nor her husband seemed to know. I explained the story to them. This just makes me wonder. Obviously Kamakura is well known enough by sight, but maybe not his name or deeds... His image is probably just the ubiquitous samurai, the same way Sarutobi Sasuke a la Sanada Juyushi is the iconic generecised brand ninja. If you're wondering about why I know any of this... I have no memory for history or language UNLESS it has to do with ninja.

In High school, I got a concussion the day before but didn't know it yet cause no symptoms had started. Well the next day in History class, I was just sitting there when my eyes started to feel weird. I rubbed them a couple times and after the third time I rubbed them I was almost completely blind. With only about a little bit of space to see out of, I frantically raised my hand and told the teacher I couldn't see anything. That motherfucker actually thought I was making it up and was trying to get out of class and I was just trying to go to the nurses office. He tested me by saying "how many fingers am I holding up?" I got pissed off and raised my voice "I can't see!" He got mad back and said "whatever, do what you want." So I turned around to go back to my seat to grab my stuff, bashed my knee against my desk and jammed my fingers into the wall because I misplaced where the door was. The last thing I heard from the teacher was "real good acting there." Then the fun part started because I had to hug the wall to use as a guide, walk down two flights of stairs, and get to the office. I managed, called my mom to take me to the doctor, and halfway there, my vision slowly started to come back and I yelled "stop the car!" jumped out, and threw up into the side ditch. That was probably the most unique experience I've been through.

I have dislocated a shoulder, popped in back in and went back to my day and then maybe twenty minutes later seriously scratched the surface of my eye. As it turns out I also have a rare condition that causes scar tissue cells to not bond properly with my eye tissue so I spontaneously become functionally blind in one eye every six to nine months.

Xiahou Dun(Jia ho Dune) is the Chinese warrior you mentioned who got shot in the eye, pulled the arrow out with his eye still on it and ate it infront of the enemies as a fear tactic to show that even if you dismember this man he is still a monster.

I played HS Football (American) and at the start of the 2nd quarter I took a helmet to the ribs (I was a defensive lineman). Went to the sidelines, got my ribcage taped up and was back in a few plays later. After the game I had x-rays done and we found out that I had three cracked ribs.

I'm that one American who translates accents for my other American friends. LOL Had to practically re-say everything a Scot was saying to my sister since she had no idea what he was saying. It was so funny because technically they were both speaking English, yet needed me to translate for them.

Fun injury: I was a kid probably like 8 or 9 and tried to move my brothers bike. I fell over onto it and as it was falling it was moving, so the cog turned, pulled my finger into it and pierced straight through my finger tip. It gets better. My mom who was outside runs over and starts PULLING and YANKING me while my finger is literally impaled by this thing. Now my BROTHER comes running and separates us and has to crank my finger out of the bike. The scar isn't visible on my finger but if I write long enough with a wood pencil it used to show up, might not anymore but I rarely see those anymore anyway.

When I was 16, I was in my uncle farm riding a horse without the saddle, only with a rope on his mouth, suddenly the horse got scared of something and ran off to the fields, I had no way to stop it, Soo I pulled the rope with all my strength, in that moment the horse got pissed with me and threw me into the floor, when I got up I saw my arm, the back of my hand was touching my forearm, I simply grab my hand, put it back on place, and had to walk 10 miles (16km) (holding my arm) to reach the main house, now I've got a huge scar and some bolts in my wrist

I got one, So i was cutting the lawn (which was really overgrown) and i had a close call with a bit of branch, so i went to go pick it up. Turns out it was pretty big and it ended up getting caught in the mower and pulled me in and it clipped off the top of my right index finger. Went to the gp, then the hospital , got stiched up, so i was at home in pain told not to undo the bandage. About day 3 the pressure and pain was so bad i took the bandage off, it had gone purple and green and dying looking. Went to the gp, got those stiches clipped off and man, i felt 100x better even though my finger was rotten. Not sure how long later but it was better enough i decided to take a bath without a bag on it, As i was relaxing and saw something float passed and you know where this is going. So yeah moral of the story, don't do what i did

I broke my foot twice in two weeks. Because once was not enough. I was on crutches for 13 weeks. This all happened two weeks after I had a breast reduction, where they had cut through the muscles in my chest and under my arms. The worst part of the whole ordeal was how much my hands hurt from the crutches. Because I was using them correctly. There really must be a better way.

My worst injury? I woke up from extreme back pain one weekend, and after months of confronting my doctor about it, a scan showed I had a herniated disc in my lower back. I have an idea of where it came from, but no real way to confirm it. My theory is that the tiny fall down 1 step(about 2 to 3 feet fall from standing to tailbone on metal stair), landing tailbone onto the edge of the metal step as a preteen, lead to a back injury that got worse with age, and one day my back just said "F it". I also carried multiple heavy backpacks/bags to school nearly every school day, between that small fall, until I graduated, as well as fell (twisting my ankle in the process) many, many times... I'm sure those didn't help my back, either.

While we're sharing injuries: I broke my left leg (shin bone) when I was six, falling off a jetty (we'd just been fishing). The pain was incredible, like nothing I'd experienced then or ever since really. Anyway my dad shrugged it off, and didn't really believe me saying it was broken; me being six and all, lol. So he lifted me up and tried to stand me on my two legs; all the while going "there there my boy, come on, you can stand"! I had to try, it turned out, and it was the fucking weirdest feeling ever, like my leg had become a jellyfish.. Imagine standing with your right leg on wood and the left over a giant piece of jelly; and being expected to stand straight :P. it was allright in the end after rowing my ass in bad weather across the water to get to the car, cause they couldn't carry me (we were at our cabin). Still my left side is not as strong as the right, by far.

I was hit by a truck going about 60 km/h. I was on my bike so I had a helmet. When I noticed that he wasn’t stopping I had panicked and turned around, closing my eyes and peddled like mad. Soon I couldn’t feel the bike so I thought I’d hit the curb and opened my eyes to see a red blur (truck) and grey blur (asphalt) and closed them again to wait for the impact. I hit the ground but my bike had gone under the truck throwing me up, over, and clear. I landed hard on my left and smoked my head on the ground. There were huge patches of bruising all along my left side but the helmet did it’s job very well and that was just find. Nothing broken and for years the only long term damage was that my left elbow was a bit numb. I hated the feeling but in the last couple years the feeling has been coming back. There’s still a small patch that’s a bit numb but it’s almost gone now. Spent about 3 hours in the hospital before being sent home. When to school on Monday and when people asked how my weekend was I casually mentioned that I’d been hit by a truck on the Saturday and showed them the bruising. Dumb luck and good helmet could very well be the only reason I’m still here
