FACTOR 55 FLAT LINK INSTALL - RICH MACS 76

Hey guys, heres a vid we shot on fraser island showing an install of the factor 55 flat link, using a authentic rope spool and Fast Fid. All these parts are available on the drifta website.

Joel Francis haha me to but i was pretty careful that didn’t happen. Would have been the perfect thing to happen filming a vid cause it’s Murphy’s law everything can go wrong does : ) L

Can someone explain to me: why do we need a hook or flat link or anything else at the end of our winch rope? Why not use the bare loop at the end of the rope, and attach it to our winch anchor (dead man, tree protector, whatever) using a soft shackle?

TheFerguscan you could do, but the steel loop is not really the best ‘minimum diameter radius’ for rope, that’s why itself is a large loop.. so there’s risk of the shackle failing on the thinner steel loop.. smaller the diameter radius, more chance of the rope failing.. that’s why F55 use the synthetic rope spool, gives the proper min diameter radius.. also, hard to neatly connect the end of the winch rope to your vehicle, with no hook on the end. L

Ok, so here's the thing I don't understand. Soft shackles have now hit the market. The idea is to get rid of a heavy shackle in case of failure. But now we are attaching massive blocks of aluminium in place of a hook?

The hole idea is that that hooks can bend open whereas the aluminium doesn't due to its design

Ben Wilson massive block of aluminium is a bit of an overstatement.. : ) they pretty light actually, lot lighter than a large steel hook . And, much safer, the clasp on the hooks can easily break, and not so neat on the front of your 4wd.. so neater, easier, quicker, safer, not for everyone if you don’t think you need it, but yeah they are a very nice bit of kit.. lot people going that way.. : ) L
