Artillery's main purpose is not casualties, but to force the enemy to hunker down. They cant move, and the effect on morale is devastating. Many WW2 vets have said that artillery was the worst thing about war. Deafening explosions, dirt, wood and shrapnel flying everywhere, trees exploding and all you could do is huddle in your little pothole and hope for the best. And the bombardments last for a long time too. Hours and into days at a time.
@anzacwashington7050
@anzacwashington7050 4 жыл бұрын
@@rykehuss3435 That's late artillery doctrine. By around WWI artillery was like that. But gunpowder artillery began life as a weapon chiefly for causing large numbers of casualties at great range, and for causing serious structural damage. Artillery was used all the time in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries for annihilating enemy formations, especially cavalry, who were taller targets, and more vulnerable to large missiles. The days of week long barrages and guns of ranges of more than ten miles came very late in the lifetime of battlefield artillery, and while it did change the way the weapon worked, it hasn't completely changed its purpose or image.

(My reaction as I watch the video) (Video starts) Huh, that's an interesting track layout I wonder what that's for. Ah, here comes the train now. I...wow that's a long train. Oh, it looks cool just looping around like that. What's the purpose of this? It can't unload stuff like that. Maybe it just looks cool. Now that I think about it those wagons look pretty weird. Is the overlay on to show what's in them? Hm...I don't know. Oh hey the train's stopping. I guess that's the reason for the video name, the train being so long and all. (Artillery wagons start firing) Anyways I............. what? what? What? WHAT? WHAT!?!? The train is...the wagons they're... THE TRAIN IS MADE OF GUNS!?!? This is...wow I mean...WHAT!?!? You are both right. Big Bertha was the artillery from the ARM side in Total Annihilation and an artillery weapon in WW1. But the weapon was never officially called that way. It was just a nickname from british people for that Weapon, also referring to the fat daughter in the Krupp familiy who made that Gun. But that weapon was never a railroad cannon, unlike Schwerer Gustav. That's a huge Gun.

Though, never as devastating as the revolver like monster cannon, the Father to Big Bertha, forgot it's name. That thing, when it started to shoot, would need atleast 20+ Nuclear reactors just to allow it to shoot without much drag... Or it would be slow or empty ALL energy reserves nearly instantly... EDIT: "Vulcan" The cannon i was talking about was the "Vulcan" takes up 30 nuclear reactors to keep it going steady, for just ONE Vulcan cannon. But it's super darn devastating too...

Absolutely awesome, but what happened to the train. A large section of it was destroyed, it happened just after 2m into the video, just as you started manually targeting the perimeter. It doesn't look like the biters and I can't figure out what happened, there wasn't even a message that they were destroyed.
@michaellundgren6949
@michaellundgren6949 6 жыл бұрын
I believe that was a misfire from the targeting remote.
@hanli427
@hanli427 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that seems like a possibility, but it doesn't seem to make sense either. I've been looking at the segment over and over, and I can't think of anything you did to cause it. Seems more like a bug, that caused a mistargetting, or the shells exploded on being fired maybe? I doubt the devs considered that much artillery being fired at once. Something may have glitched out.
@cptn.penguin902
@cptn.penguin902 6 жыл бұрын
I've had mis-fires like this as well! And on a much smaller scale (4 artillery wagons). It happened after I did the "binding the map drag key to another button" trick and was firing all over the place, too.

You can't fit nearly as many shells on a cargo wagon as you can on an artillery wagon, so just moving the artillery train is better.
