3:52 For anyone wondering: Divide the bottom number by the top number. For multiple outputs, divide by that number. 0.5 * X/5=1 becomes...5/0.5=10 0.75 * X/21=1/3 becomes...21/0.75=28...28/3=9.3 (round up to 10)

This video was exactly what I needed. I'm often discouraged by seeing other people's base designs, since it feels to me like part of the game experience is enjoying the discovery on your own. However, the specific mechanics like module modifiers and assembler speed were things I needed help with when calculating rates. This did a perfect job of explaining the math without telling me how to play the game. Thanks!

Very good video... just a small note, you don't round to the "nearest whole number", in that case you would round down every time the decimal is smaller than .5. You ALWAYS round up, if you don't want to compromise the speed of the system
@SoellessGaming4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for adding that, I mentioned at some point about always rounding up but definitely my wording could have been more precise like with the example you mentioned.

Here is the formula for anyone who wants to easily calculate speed modules: i / (a + m * mc) / o * y i = item crafting speed a = assembly machine crafting speed m = module speed modifier mc = number of speed modules o = number of items produced per craft y = total number of desired items For example 10 yeller belts a second with tier 2 assembly machines with 2 tier 1 speed modules: 1 / (0.75 + 0.2 * 2) / 2 * 10 = 4.34 If you want a formula that calculates just the number of machines needed to feed another machine: i / (a + m * mc) / o * (r * p) / pc i = base item crafting time a = assembly machine crafting speed m = module speed modifier (0.2, 0.3, or 0.5) mc = number of speed modules o = number of items produced (per craft) r = number of items needed (for 1 parent not all) p = number of parents pc = parent machine crafting time (for 1 parent)

Meta question: how do decide what goals to reach? One per min vs 10 vs 1000? What and why?
@SoellessGaming4 жыл бұрын
Early game it's all about a goal that is realistic and easy to support right off the bat; so one pack/second or 1/2 pack per second is a very easy goal to shoot for. Later on, your science per minute goal can increase once your tech increases and ability to increase throughput of resources increases - so maybe that will be something in the couple-hundred per minute range. End-game it's up to you how much you want to scale - obviously the larger megabases will mean you're going to be putting more hours into the base as you dedicate the time to mining outposts to support the throughput of materials you need, bigger factories, bigger rail networks; so it's totally up to the player to decide if it's worth it to go for something that big.
@ryannixon41382 жыл бұрын
@@SoellessGaming Ohhhh see Ive always wondered this: Why use 20 machines, why not 200! I guess its just up to what you want for the while, then later on when demand increases you scale up to a new number? interesting... At least this removes perfectionism haha.

For those of you that don't want to play the guessing game and are not good with algebra/math you can rewrite the equation like this and the answer will be the number of assemblers required like she explained: (item crafting speed * pack per second) / assembler speed = # of assemblers. (5 * 1)/0.5 = 10. For the science packs that product more than one see the example @6:52: The equation is just like before but your going to add in the 3 in the denominator like such: (21 * 1)/(0.75 * 3) = # of assemblers. There is a rounding error in her math of 9.4, it should actually be 9.3 (0.3 repeating), but she likely did that for simplicity, regardless your still going to round up to 10. In written form like before: (item crafting speed * pack per second) / (assembler speed * output quantity) = # of assemblers. ***make sure to use your parenthesis properly.

Thank you for the awesome video!!!!
@josefernandohowerbarbosa10 ай бұрын
You can also simplify in a single formula like this ((goal per second / Amount of Packs in recipe) * Crafting Speed) / Assembler Speed = # of Assemblers Replacing or the first: ((1 / 1) * 5) / 0.5 = 10 For the second ((1 / 3) * 21) / 0.75 = 9,3333 ~ [10]

handy. Question: is 1 a second an easy goal, or hard? like, at what number per second does it become hard to accomplish early game for a new player?
@SoellessGaming3 жыл бұрын
1 science/sec is a good early game goal, and fairly easy to calculate early on. Later on, eventually you'll be counting your goals in rockets/min (or how many thousands of science/min [ie: 1000/min, 2000/min, etc]). A megabase is usually considered at minimum 1000 science/min.

@TogeNoBara Жыл бұрын
I am confused at the sub items. This will tell you the ratio of assemblers needed for the final item per second, or any item per second, but how can I then step down to a sub item? What is the calculation for sub item which build into say, purple science? By using the most basic equations, you did what every math teacher ever does. You solve easier equations, and then throw a wrench into them telling us it is the same when it isn't...or at least that is what it feels like, particularly when you keep using equations with such even and rounded models. I would have liked to see you calculate purple science all the way to the lowest component.

Just divide the crafting time (6) with the producing ratio of the factory (0.5), right? 6/0.5 = 12.

For a more informative and reorganized formula, i.e, 𝑥 = [ pack/sec ( you wish to acquire) x Item crafting speed ] / Speed of assembler ( 0.5 lvl 1 ; 0.75 lvl 2 ; 1.25 lvl 3 ) ; for which if 𝑥 is not an integer ; 𝑥 = ⌈𝑥⌉ ( just means we round up ) So for example in the case of red packs: 𝑥 = ( 1 x 5 ) / 0.5 = 10 If we wanted to double production to 2 packs per sec it'd make sense that we need double the assemblers e.g. 𝑥 = ( 2 x 5 ) / 0.5 = 20

I've got something brewing at github.com/xaviershay/factorio-layout-designer It works for calculating the ratios, but downside right now is you have to enter all the ratios by hand (which is pretty soul destroying). I'm working with factorio item browser to be able to automate that part (and also working on getting Krastorio 2 into that library) so hopefully soon will have something workable!

Great video but I am confused. I did the math for the blue science with assembler 2 machines and I found that I need 24 advanced circuit assemblers for every 16 blue science packs that I need. When I checked the online calculator it said I needed 12. I don't know how my math is wrong. If I want 1 blue science pack per second shouldn't the equation be .75x/6=3 which gives me 24? I am probably missing something
@rmidthun4 жыл бұрын
Did you miss that blue science are created two at a time (I did at first)? For 1/s, you will need 16 machines. A machine needs 3 red/24 s at normal speed, which would be 1/8 per second * 16 machines = 2 red/s. But, since the machines are running .75, it is only 1.5/s needed. So .75x/6 = 1.5 which works out to 12.
@MrThesin4 жыл бұрын
You cant use the number of assemblers you need to find out how many assemblers you need, I believe you are saying at 4:30 0.5*x/0.5=1 where x is gears needed not assemblers needed.

So I recently got into Factorio and want to figure out production rates on science packs, but everything I have seen so far hasn't been good enough. Let's say I have 10 Labs and I want to keep them full or nearly full when researching. How many red science factories do I need? How many of the other material factories do I need to support those red science factories? When looking for an answer, I only see people grab random x items per minute or hour calculations, seemingly gotten out of thin air. I do realise that lab research rate changes, but still haven't seen anyone even address it. Isn't the point is to maximize the research speed with your current plans and setup?
@GhostStyle0079 ай бұрын
Literally replace the word "assembly" with "lab" in the video... i dont see what is missing here in order for you to copy paste that process to calculate labs ratio...

Loved the video but I can't learn from the black box method of teaching equations. They have to be logically explained in segments relating to their own creation for anything to sink in. My interpretation was something like you are building a percentile from a whole range of seconds and fitting in a puzzle piece that balances with one moment of time an item has. But since Factorio is a game that lets you visualize fractions in real time the ratios are actual items. I'm gonna re-watch until I get this, hummm.
