when i die in the first 5 minutes of a run to biters, i just restart. but in a race you can't. and it was very enjoyable to watch those big brain pipe-walling starts to deal with early aggression, today i learned.

That horrible demoralising feeling kept me from finishing the game for my first several hundered hours of factorio. I couldn't get over getting attacked and losing so much that recovery is just more effort than restarting. Eventually I won after i gave up my pride and nerfed biters in settings the victory was hollow but much appreciated.

were you cranking the settings up? Because i think on default the fights are quite manageable... or maybe that was just due to me taking my time and just not polluting as much as these speedrunners. :D

@@irrelevant_noob yeah for me i had the biggest trouble with beating back biter based because dying in my head was like losing. Now I plan my factory around respawning body retrieval etc. The approach I had to the game was quite like a challenge.

Can someone explain why antz turns on the grid once in a while? And what was the whole thing with biters and pipes? What was he trying to do there?

pollution happens per chunk, the grid helps to see where chunks are and how pollution is going to be distributed. the pipes are to prevent the biters from going back, since i want to farm ammo.

Pollution spreads by chunck, so he wants to put his miners in the furthest chunck away from the biters (notice the thicker lines, all the miners are on the left side of one of them) so he gets more time before the first attacks.

why do you guys play while your fish and grenades are bound at the far right end of your hotbar? i always bind them somewhere at the left side of the hotbar close to the movement keys so that i can switch them quickly without my mouse while running around.

I really can’t imagine doing this. I could never play this game with aggressive biters or this rapidly. I “design” my base as slowly and haphazardly. And by “design” I mean try to cobble something together that barely functions before discovering that I didn’t leave enough space and have to make a bigger mess.

I think we all started out that way.. not that I'm anywhere close to the speed these guys get things running but yeah, it all comes down to experiance.. learning good setups for everything and thinking around that to place your base....

@@TheNonplayer Nah, I like just winging it, seeing something functional arise out of the chaos is glorious. My next run will be planned out to get the three timed achievements but that is just to knock them out. Then back to chaos. Biters are just antithetical to what I enjoy about the game. And that is why the devs built in options.

Timer starting when the map starts rather then on preview gives the players time to plan out where everything is going to go. Which gives a big advantage.
