The animations for spiderbot are amazing. I'm in love with the addition of an endgame vehicle that's so beautifully animated and can be somewhat automated.

the devs mentioned spidertron logistic support was meant to be added, but they couldnt make it stable enough to add in with 1.0, so it's pretty high on the list for 1.1 :D

Combat thoughts: I found their rocket usage when firing automatically to be somewhat obscene, but it does the job. Not that explosive rockets are terribly hard to make in quantity by the time you get it, but it positively vomits ammo when there's a lot of targets about. But piloted.... I found that loading up my suit with lasers and just giving spiderbro a ton of shields and a few exoskeletons worked absurdly well on very large late-game biter bases, even with no rockets at all. I'll probably have to try going all-in and having a suit with nothing but power and lasers to maximize it, though even just a half dozen lasers was crazy. Just... don't load it up with nukes. Or if you do, save first.

@Wisp Rohell lol I usually place a few mk2 shields and a reactor with the rest filled with lasers and just place the bot near a few bases and that way while the biters attempt to charge they run to their death's

@@N8Maple01 so that would be an equipment item then but that would op waaaaaaay too op btw an op mod is the roboport radar mod (can't think if that is its name or not, oh well) and it only shows the area of the roboport construction radius and the drawback for the mod is the need to place roboports everywhere but does give the incentive to build a nice grid of them

Btw, ctrl-clicking a chest takes everything in it, no need to open its inventory.

@@davidgustavsson4000 Yes, I hope that everyone who gets as far into the game as to build a spidertron will know that, but it is a bit opaque when you're making a video - suddenly the chest is empty and inventory full, but the viewer has no idea how that happened unless it's narrated, which quickly gets old.

My favorite part of spidertron is just that it can walk over everything. My solar farm is now cutting my base in half, but it's no issue cuz spidertron can just walk across

Makes sense that inserters cannot reach spidertron, but it would be really nice if spidertron would have its own logistic reguest and autotrash slots.

Or a loading device. A spidertron port like the Roboport. Somthing to act as a requester or buffer for the spidertron, while it is out. You could click it with the remote and it would dock and reload.

It would be really nice if the bots could feed the spidertrons, or that you had a parking-space that aligned it with chests, just like a train. Or maybe like a loading-bay, since it's above ground, that would be nice as well. Otherwise, great work as always! This gave me tons of new ideas!

One option that exists is to have a set of chests outside of robot range, but filled (via belt/train/whatever) in an automated fashion to a certain level (capped chests, or circuit condition limits or what have you)... then get the spidertron close to them (can be done from map view!), and run the deconstruction planner over the chests. Wait for the spidertron's bots to pick everything up, and then hit ctrl-z to undo the decon... and they'll start filling again, awaiting the next round. :)

I’ve just unlocked the creep-o-tron (I hate spiders in general, severe arachnophobe here) but I do love this machine. I love how it doesn’t need to use fuel of any kind to move, and a nice touch if you park your Spidertron above a rocket silo, the body can still move anywhere over the silo while the legs will find ground around the silo to stand over. This machine is op af and I love it. I’ve found out though you don’t need a roboport in the Spidertron if you have power armor that has a roboport in it already. The drones in your armor’s roboport will repair the Spidertron as long as you’re sat inside it. This is of course only if you’re inside it though.

Nice video. I've had a play with the spidertron at end game (around 50 rockets launched). Biter nests are huge and mostly behemoths so I've found the best way to use the spidertron in combat is to ride in it and manually fire nukes into the biter nests. I set it up with 1 fusion reactor, 3 speed upgrades and a few personal lasers. Combined with my power armour personal lasers and repair bots it becomes a total wrecking ball. I just have to remember to let the lasers do all of the up close biter killing!

yes, although you need to take occasional breaks for recharging, i find it useful to replace reactors (4 slots) by 2 batteries (1 slot) and 3 lasers (3 slots). *_in personal armor,_* 2 reactors are good enough when using 4 batteries and having additional lasers to kill MUCH faster. i also mostly use only 2 shields and more lasers (if 2 shields are not good enough, i did something wrong, got stuck, and 4 or 6 wouldn't save me either), and 2 legs are fast enough to outrun all mobs: yet another space for more lasers :-)

Since the spidertron has roboports, I wonder if it's possible to place a requester chest at the edge of your base, fill it with everything the spidertron needs, turn off the base's roboport in its range, and deconstruct the chest with the spidertron

Oh yes! You can! However, anything that is too much for the inventory would be hanging around with the bots, so not terribly ideal unless you have a very small amount of stuff you want to take

Awesome video, thank you! [7:40] I wonder if you could have the Spidertron go to the beginning of your rails, then click all the way to the end point (beyond the visible area). That would make it walk in strait line and you could build while it walks

I've found the spidertron to have enough armor to not need energy shields, and explosive rockets are amazing - they'll obliterate spawners with the splash damage even if they aren't the target.

Having at least one level of energy shields are nice though, as it means the bots won't have to go out to repair minor damages (therefore putting them in danger and requiring more time to come back to restock the construction bots and repair packs, which they would consume quickly when the enemies gets to behemoths level). But beyond that, yeah their own armour is powerful enough to destroy even the biggest biter bases.

@@yvrelna You should be turning your roboports off during combat - construction bots are very delicate and repair packs are lost when they're destroyed.

@@potatosalad7667 I prefer keeping construction bots on during combats, they add extra healing, causes distractions for the spitters, and I don't like having to constantly watch my health in the middle of combat or skirting on low health, and I consider the bots fairly disposable once you've got them mass produced, so I just carry a several stacks of them when mowing down bases. Also I'm not sure you can turn off spidertron's roboports remotely, so you'll likely have no choice but to turn them on all the time, that or you'll have to bring along a backup support spider when fighting remotely.

Just be careful when fighting off a base incursion! The explosive rocket damage will destroy more of your base than the biters will. As yvrelna says in another reply, there is no OFF switch for spidertron's roboports, and you can only toggle the autotargetting when your engineer is present. With many explosive rockets, spidertron is a whirling maelstrom of death for enemies and friendly forces both. :))

For the combat Spidertron, an idea might be removing one Fusion Reactor and filling in that empty space with a pair of Mk2 batteries, an exoskeleton, and an extra Mk2 shield. The batteries will take an extra 4 minutes to recharge fully (accomplished while loading and traveling), the Exoskeleton only draws power while in use, and the shield will take ~13 seconds to charge fully. This will give you a faster and more durable Spidertron, and the Fusion plant can handle recharging the batteries while transiting to/from enemy locations. It will give you more 'surge' capacity, 50% stronger shields, 30% higher movement speed, but need some time to pull back and recharge (i.e. when reloading)

What would be really great is if you could send it on automated attack missions like you can units in say Star Craft. Queue up waypoints for the spidertron to hit then load it with a bunch of auto fire weapons. Then just set the waypoints to do a few circles around a biter base then come back to home base. Waypoints would also be one way to solve the AI pathing issues.

You could build an fortress with all the stuff needed for kill the biters near their base using a blueprint and a spidertron with a roboport. So nice to have this.

You don't really need to build a fortress near the biter bases, though. Just load up with a few rockets and you're good.

Could you prep the new out post area by setting up radar coverage before you send out the Spidertron? Once the radars cover the outpost area, you could lay down your blue prints from map mode then send out the Spidertron. Depending on the build area of the personal robotports and the area needed for the outpost, you may still need to move the Spidertron around a bit so that it could build everything. But prepping the area seems like it would be easier than laying down the radars as you build.

The individual placement for each leg so it actually looks like it's picking its way across the terrain is ADORABLE. You can fix it getting stuck on coastlines simply by deploying an ecologically unconscionable amount of landfill?

It’s interesting how many similarities the spidertron has compared to the spiderbot from the game Fortresscraft evolved. I wonder if this was parallel evolution or a case of the spiderbot inspiring the spidertron

I'm thinking of trying to create a modded chest that mirrors the contents of the nearest spidertron within a few tiles of it. That way you could use the chest to load and unload a spidertron with inserters.

@@KatherineOfSky - This would be an otherwise ordinary chest. Except, when no spidertron was near it, it would have no inventory slots. When a spidertron got near it, every single inventory slot in the chest would be exactly the same as an inventory slot in the spidertron. So you would shove things into the chest with an inserter and they would appear in the nearest spidertron. If you took something out of the chest it would remove that same thing out of the nearest spidertron.

I found that it used rockets really fast, though that might be beacuse my latest game where I easy could get it is bobs with rather hard to kill biters with base game weapons.

Wait, just use more spiders and allow logistics requests on spidertrons! Note: you can use one remote for more than one spidertron by first selecting each and commanding them to follow one, then selecting the one being followed by the remote to move just that one around, the mob follows the one...

are you able to set waypoints? if so it solves the bad pathfinding somewhat, and lets us do more war, since we can plan routes of attack and have the spidertron exfil itsself while you send more spidertrons to support

I haven't tested it myself, but wouldn't it possible to transport the items to chests outside of roboport range then deconstruct those chests with the Spidertron in order to restock it? Takes a lot longer but atleast it doesn't require as much manual work. I guess you could also do some fancy unpowering of a roboport with a switch under the condition that the chests are full, which would then allow you to deconstruct them with the Spidertron, saving the need to move the items out of roboport range.

You can, but if there are more materials than fit in the spidertron, then the bots will hang in the air and be unusable.

Wow! Holee Molee! That's Great!! I can't wait to try out the Spidertron! I've been resisting upgrading my game from 0.18.40 to the 1.0 release, since I have a really awesome game going with Krastorio 2 mod and I don't know if 1.0 will "break" my 0.18.40 game and map? Anybody know if the 1.0 upgrade will make your 0.18.40 usable and playable if you upgrade to 1.0?? Great video on Spiderton!! Thanks for this KOS!!

The devs have done their best to make sure mods don't break. However, some people are reporting issues with a handful of mods: it just depends on what you have installed.

Already pretty awesome, but here's hoping for some mods to : A) Program paths / waypoints B) Letting the trunk act like a requester/provider chest, so you don't have to manually load it every time.

Awesome addition, although my first thought was wondering if we could request an arachnophobia mode which turns the creepy spiders into even creepier cat heads.

There is a mod that turns the legs into laser pointers. It's called "arachnophobia" (warning not for cats)

I'm pretty sure we once upon a time could build blueprints into the discovered but not "radared" ;-) area. Just don't recall the version. Need to do a little dissect I guess (easy too, I'm sure it got changed in in 0.x.0).

Okay, I *was* curious enough to test now (I have folder back to 0.13 on my C:, all with playable saves :D). First checked the release notes, and 0.16.0 had something that looked suspicious: "Creating blueprints and using deconstruction planner in zoom-to-world map mode now skip entities covered by fog of war." It doesn't mention placing blueprints, but it sounded like that could be it. Ran a 0.15.x map. Yup, could place BP into the fog of war. I don't think I need to test 0.16, because I did suspect 15 or 16 to be the culprits anyway (it's been ages ;-) since that change).

Hi. Did you already discover the grid aligned blueprint feature? You can make it so that your rail prints perfectly slot against each other.

@@KatherineOfSky It's great. You can do your aligned train system and start it wherever you want and be sure it will meet up right or just tile your blueprints cleanly. Also you can now plant them from the zoomed out map.

I think I still prefer the helicopter mod, but if the spidertron doesn't collide with trains, I can certainly see the utility for just walking around the base. Yeah, it would be much handier for remote construction jobs if it had radar range of a stationary radar.

So strange that Spidertron behave differently in my game. 1) The building robot won't be activated unless placing ghost with Spidertron's robotpod area. Moving to existing ghost structure have no effect. 2) The remote will be disconnected once the Spidertron is harvested. It need to be connected with the remote everything when taking out from inventory.

If you decide to load nukes into your spider... don't rush in... make sure you skirt the range and back out quick (4 launches of nukes in quick succession can accidently kill a poorly shielded spidertron).

KoS-Hi Again. Why do we put batteries in the spidertron when it has the fusion reactor? I am still new so I thought batteries were for when you dont have the reactor earlier on. You use solar panels then the batteries for night. BTW I have used your videos to help me in the game.

You need batteries to power lasers when there is much fighting going on. The reactor can't keep up with the power demands.

imagine being able to resupply the spidertron with logistics bots just like the player character, so far manual refueling is hardly better than just going out yourself, unless you can manage multiple locations at once with multiple spider trons also having one spidertron with a full defense station setup would be also kind of cool (like gun turrets with requester chests and coal inserters) as a fast defense setup also an improved radar range tech or other kind of mechanic would be really nice for this kind of method my personal favorite idea would be that a set amound of rockets launched would increase radar range by maybe 25% each increasing number of rockets just like ininite tech but maybe with a cap of 300 - 500% radar range plopping down hundreds of radar stations to cover your network simply doesn't appeal to me

Hmm, you probably can't copy the spidertron trunk yet because as a dev I've noticed up until now everything you can copy is an exact full config copy like. Chest - Config (Active slots, logistics settings) Train - Config (Schedule, Cargo, Colour) Car Config - (Trunk, Colour) Spidertron - Config (Trunk, Linked Remote - beep beep beep, linked remote needs to stay different. that's new, like nothing else before it).

I'm only afraid that at one point the devs will give us a biters counter-spidertron. An absolutely huge biter that can walk over walls.

The only issue I ever had with factorio was in single player - the grind is just too much to get the rocket launch, and not enough reward. just more biters or worse, more grind. Trains were a nice goal, but the interface was always so buggy that the idea of setting up a train system makes my head hurt. I may try the updated interface someday. The spidertron may actually be a better one. I can use them to defend against the biters, and help with the grind in single player.

There's no grind at all in vanilla. (Just build enough production. Speedrunners can finish the game in under 2 hours). Also, I never found any "buggi-ness" in the train interface.. it's been working perfectly for 4 years for me ;-) If you have questions, we can help: come to our discord server :-)

It would be really helpful if the spidertrons could have personal logistic system just as the players, so that it would be self-sufficient within the logistic network. That could free us from the tiresome manual loading of the spidertron. Also I like the way how the shield and life are presented. It remindes me of the Protoss. The spidertron feels like a prototype Protoss dragoon.:D

I love how the Spidertron is just straight up a metal gear, it’s a mobile launching platform armed with nuclear warheads, that’s checks out for being an actual Metal Gear LMAO

the spider has a complete lack of path-finding; it only goes in straight lines. i think it must be intentional, and youre supposed to use waypoints to go around lakes. (edit: maybe back then there were no waypoints yet)

The Spidertron is an endgame vehicle so there's a lot of time to learn about stuff before you get there :-)
