Just a funny story with the labs feature. I was playing on a multiplayer game with friends and one of them was in charge of the science labs. He set up around 50 something labs and connected ALL of them in a giant web with inserters. It is the most impractical setup ever... but it is so fun to watch a single pack be moved around in a endless loop!

Another thing that may be useful to know... Artillery trains can store 100 shells on-board. Artillery turrets only hold 15 shells if manually filled. Other than that, they're functionally the same as far as I know. Also it's possible to set-up a parking station to use inserters to load and unload stuff from a vehicle. I haven't seen it as a common thing on too many maps but it's useful. (Trains is obvious, but I'm talking about cars and tanks.) Sometimes I use those two things together. :)

That is fun to know, though, regarding the car and tanks being able to be filled via the inserters. These Factorio devs seem to think of everything!

nice and useful tips !!! here are some additional hints for these tips: tip 3 : even when labs research a bit less, it probably is quite useful to only feed one lab and not need lots of belts, splitters etc. I found a comb like pattern to be useful, eg having one line of 10 labs, and then have two lines of chained labs from each of those 10 labs. the resulting additional 60 labs work at 99%+ and even the "main chain" still works quite well if their chain is built with 3 stack inserters for each link. that "main chain" can also be fed from multiple points, but then requires filter inserters to avoid labs "stealing" bottles back and forth between each other. this applies to unbeaconed labs only since 50+ beaconed and moduled labs need more than half a belt of each science anyway. tip 4 : mining drills can also be switched on and off. it's a bit complicated, but i have built a mining field that first only mines the spots with most resources (above average ore) and then enables more and more miners. result is that an ore field doesn't slowly die, but instead starts mining slowly at first (eg while still building a furnace array) and becoming faster later until (watch out for this!) the entire ore field is suddenly depleted at the same time :-) tip 5 : since wires are already free when built with blueprints and since you don't get wires back when removing them, i don't consider it to be too cheaty using a mod that makes production of red and green wires free (this does NOT apply to copper wires that are needed as intermediates for other things), eg mods.factorio.com/mod/freenetworkwiring or mods.factorio.com/mod/free_circuit_wires tip 7 : quick replace of normal and underground belts and splitters is nice but can be annoying when replacing lots of them by dragging (eg when upgrading the tier). there is a mod that i like a lot: it still allows you to quick replace any of them by clicking, but sticks to only belts when you start replacing a belt tile and then drag along the belt: mods.factorio.com/mod/Slower_Quickreplace tip 8 : when using a splitter to merge two lines, i set the output filter to "fish" on the non-connected output side to avoid having "stuck items" there. someone else who did it that way too even created a mod that replaces the fish icon with an invisible icon to make it look nicer (i don't use that mod since i don't want an invisible icon in my storage chests that i also block by filtering with fish)

I am impressed with your use of the circuits to even mine an ore patch. Ingenious! Do you still place everything tight or do you allow for room between the miners? Their hardware footprint is 3x3, but the ore gathering footprint is 5x5. MadZuri mentioned that summing over all the miners will introduce too much "potential" ore because of overlaps. How do you overcome that problem? I have seen the deconstruction planner used as a placeholder, instead of fish, to do the same thing. As long as it is something that should not be on a belt, it will behave correctly. Also, based on the recent Factorio Friday Facts, it might not be possible to use blueprint as objects, so fish might become the de facto item to filter on splitters.
@Anson_AKB
@Anson_AKB 6 жыл бұрын
you have to be very careful to not feed back or merge the wrong signals when counting the total amount of ore and the amount of ore of a single miner and at the same time needing ore signals to enable the miners. remember that the input and output connections of a miner are at the same location and can't be separated from each other. the whole setup requires some additional combinators for each miner, and thus i was glad when i finally could put the miner, power poles, belts, and all the circuitry in a small 5x5 area which automatically avoided the "overlapping problem" you mentioned :-) the only tiles which might have overlapped were the tiles under a belt which could have been shared by two miners. the final blueprint was very modular and included everything for one miner, even providing a count of +1 to the number of miners with available ore for computing the average later. it has been a while that i built it (maybe in an old 0.15 or even 0.14 map), but except for that blueprint, it probably only needed one combinator outside the mining field to compute the avarage. of course, this was more of a fun project than useful since having a few combinators for each miner is some kind of overkill, and making that blueprint (avoiding all those feedbacks) probably took as much time as mining all the ore field the usual way :-) but that's exactly what makes factorio such a great game :-) blueprints as objects: i haven't yet seen that info, and to use all that stuff related to recursive blueprints, blueprints *have* to be objects that can be moved by belts, inserters, bots, etc and also be used as signals. Anyway and strangely, using decon planners instead of fish didn't occur to me, although having a red block would clearly be an indicator for something blocked, and less probable than a fish that might come from a fish farm to provide health. thanks for that idea! :-)

To copy configuration between machines, shift right click on the preconfigured machine to copy and shift click on an unconfigured machine to paste. You can also paste things like recipes that require items onto logistics requester chests to fetch 3 equivalent crafts off the network by default. Inserter settings can be copied across to other inserters regardless of tier as well. I'm not sure how far this feature goes, but it's especially useful in modded environments where there are lots of fiddly bits that you have to manage.

This can be immensely helpful in conjunction with power switches. In a previous base I had massive smelting complexes that could smelt some absurd amount of plates if ran all at once but it required like 5GW of power just for the smelting which was a tad absurd. I set it up so when the chests were full, the train stops turned off and the power was switched off as well. The result is that as long as I don’t let my outposts run completely dry for too long (there’s some 80k storages at the smelters for each type) it uses an average of about 2GW of power. Such things can be used to mitigate pollution as well. Disconnecting the power lines and connecting them through the switch is what that feature is primarily for. :)

It's useful in conjunction with being able to place copper wire to wire back those connections. This allows you to isolate electric networks. For me, I usually just put everything into a single electric network, so I don't find it useful to disconnect the electric network, but it seems like some people find it useful to make bases that can prioritise electric power to critical sections of the factory when damaged by biters or when the system is running low on fuel.

I use it to discriminate energy comsuption on my base alongside swiches. Like if my batts on main feed are bellow 50%, I drop mining machines; if below 40%, I drop raw ore procesing; below 30%, I drop sience and all non defense oriented receptors; and bellow 20% I start up my steam generators back up power plant.

The most interesting take-away for me is how introcate you can make the game if you want to perfect comsumption and preserve space. But then again you could also just expand and stack infinitely in the same time with ever increasing gains. But who needs 1k of liquified oil products if you can have a pipe crossing redefined and not lose a single drop of oil in a world you are spending month on not ever even using all the close by oil ressources before advancing to another world or falling victim to real life issues. Sounds just like me. Btw ships and planes are not in the game yet but we can launch all types of trains and rockets, is that correct?

Reading the ore patch -- does it fail once its 5x5 space is mined (no longer connected to the ore patch), so do you have to hook them all up to get longterm consistency? a Tutorial on how to tell where the ups drain is coming from or smart trains that only go get supply's when they need to
@TheZebinator
@TheZebinator 6 жыл бұрын
The smart train can be done a few ways, one way that I do is that I "turn off" the offloading station when the offloading buffers are almost full, that means the train just sits and waits at the station before until the offloading station comes online again. The way I use it also means that I can have two iron ore stations in use at the same time and have them balanced even when using only one train. The way I make this happen is that I wire up all the buffer chests of one station so that I can read all the contents of the buffers, I then take that signal and put it in to a decider combinator which outputs a red signal if the buffer content is more than a certain number. I have this set up for iron ore which have a stack of 50 items, I use just wooden boxes which have 16 slots each and I have 4 cargo wagons which have a length of 6 tiles so that means that for each cargo wagon I can have 6 chests. This can be put in to a pretty neat formula: (Item stack size x Chest storage slots x 6) x Number of cargo wagons = Max amount of items that can be stored in the buffer chests. For me this equation looks like this: (50 x 16 x 6) x 4 = 19 200, that means that when the station is totally full the number of items is 19 200, since I don't want the station to constantly flicker between off and on I have the decider combinator set to about 18-19k items. I then put a wire from the decider combinator in to the station itself and set the station to turn off if it sees a red signal, so as long as the station is almost full it doesn't "request" a train which makes the train available for either another iron ore station or just lets it rest and not waste fuel. If you have two stations of the same kind you can make this system even smarter, here comes the balanced between stations part. So say you have two stations and you want them to be balanced so that not only one station is used, the way you do this is set up another station the exact way as the first one, so you basically have two identical copies (they don't need to look the same or unload on the same side but the wire logic should be the same). What you do next is put down one arithmetic combinators next to each row of buffer chests (only one per station, not one per wagon place) and remove the signal from the chest going to the station and place this in to the arithmetic combinator instead. This should take the item signal and just transform it to something else so that there are two different signals based on the two different stations, otherwise this won't work. I have two stations with iron ore and I have them placed next to each other, so I transform the signals into "L" for left and "R" for right but make sure you have the output amount be the same as the input amount, don't change the value to "output only one", you don't want the signal amount to change, you just want to differentiate between the two stations. What you do next is put down two decider combinators between the stations, wire up the output of each arithmetic combinator into the input of both decider combinator so that both decider combinators should be able to read both station contents. Then you set up the left decider combinator to output a red signal of one strenght if the left signal is bigger than the right signal and do the opposite to the decider combinator on the right. To test if this works, place a lamp in front of each decider combinator and wire it up to the the combinator above it (make it look for a red signal and make the lamp turn on if it sees a red signal with a strenght of more than one), the lamp that is on the same side as the station with the most items should light up, try to move some items around to the next station and see if the other lamp lights up as the item balance change to the other station, the first lamp should turn off, if all this happens you have done it right. Now you take a wire from the left decider combinator and put it in to the left station and do the same with the other, you can keep the lamp or even move the lamp to sit next the station, if you want you can enable color on the lamp, this way the lamp lights up in red when the station is turned off. The lights are not needed but it's nice to be able to see in a glance what stations are turned off, you could even wire up another light to light up green when the station is on but I won't say how that's made, you can probably figure it out on your own ;) (also I'm lazy ^^). The absolute last thing to do now is to take the signal from the first combinator, the arithmetic combinator that translates the signal into "L" or "R" and wire up the output of the arithmetic combinator in to the input of a new decider combinator, this should then output a red signal to the appropriate station with a strenght of one if the "L" or "R" signal is greater than the amount of items you want to have in the buffer area, this is the exact same as we did with the first station in the begining, only that we now use the signal for the specific station instead of the iron ore symbol. Use the formula I included in the first part to calculate how many items can fit in one station, and from there decide how many items should be missing before the station "requests" a train. If you have done everything correctly, you now have two stations that only turn on if the station is low on items and the other station has more items, this way the iron ore train will only go to the station that needs ore the most and it will sit and wait if both stations don't need ore. This system can be stacked to include more than just two stations and you can make a lot more happen with this, for example; only make the iron ore station turn on if we have enough coal in the coal station, or only turn on the iron ore station if the iron plate station is empty. Best of luck in your building and I hope you learned something :D

Oh thank God. If another patronising "pro tips" video told me what pressing ALT did, I was going to lose it at them. I don't see how its even a tip to tell a gamer "hey press a button and it does something". Its more of an insult, than a tip. Like: "hey, idiot, have you even ventured away from WASD, yet, you p***y?". It assumes I simply will never figure out to press alt or even press it by accident. Makes me rage lol Besides anyone who doesn't just poke and prod the buttons to see what they do can hardly call themselves a gamer, anyway. Thanks for the tips! Do you understand how signals work? Are there any good resources for how to basically program via signals? They have a binary one, so theoretically one could program signals to do anything right?

Not the most constructive comment, I think, but I find seeing a small number at the beginning of a video title like this horribly triggering due to clickbait naming habits of other media than your channel Xt. Not your fault, I realize, nor really your problem... but I'll bet there's others like me out there who have sort-of made a rule for themselves to never ever click on any link with a title like "12 things..."

What? No you can't?
@polyjohn3425
@polyjohn3425 6 жыл бұрын
+Matthijs Yes, you can. Specifically, you can manually insert more of whatever a machine is making into its output slot. Like, if you've got a chemical plant making sulfur, and you have a few sulfur in your inventory from changing belts, you can just manually put your sulfur into the machine's output slot so you don't have to deal with putting it where it goes.

You can also insert more items than a default stack size of an input item into machine. Just slightly more, like 116 iron plates.

Ah, good ol' Douglas Adam's Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy... That achievement isn't just funny. It's pretty nice. Factorio has a lot of pop culture easter eggs from the twenties (the portable fusion reactor's image is also based on Mr. Fusion on the DeLorean from Back to the Future. When I saw it for the first time, I was like: GREAT SCOTT!)
