Did you know Mercruiser has fuel filter/water separator from factory? When was the last time you changed it? My 15 year old boat had original filter:)

thanks for the iphone suggestion. I swapped the filter today. Your technique was a big help. Sadly I thought my boat shop was changing this filter upon annual service so you can imagine my surprise when I found the original ceramic filter. My motor is 23 years old.Thanks again!

Thanks for this, very helpful! Also for the suggestion on the iPhone camera, that was critical to seeing what was going on in this cramped space. I pulled the cup first with a small pail under it to catch the gas, after that there was no risk of gas getting on the phone. As a final step, I would recommend to add a loop of 20 gauge steel wire across the screw head slot and twist it tight (with needle nose pliers) so the screw can't turn. My factory install had this, I had to cut it off to get at screw to begin with.

It is easier to pull the fuel pump off, replace filter and then put pump back on....dont forget their is another filter inside the fitting that ties into the carburator...remove fuel line..unscrew fitting at carb...clean filter.

That's what I though I would do also but turns out there is a bracket in front of pump that makes it difficult to remove without taking off that bracket and everything on it. My fuel pump is very difficult to get at or even see but I found a "Mcgiver" trick that worked. Worked first time.

I have a 1978 Chris Craft with twin 130 hp 3.0 L engines. My fuel filter is on top of the fuel pump which may make this night mare not quiet as bad. I'm installing a Sierra canister type fuel filter/water separator in line prior to the fuel pump and it's filter. With some luck I may never have to replace the stock filter on top of the fuel pump. My concern was gas entering the crank case due to a leaking fuel pump diaphragm, however I'm told that there is a tube from the fuel pump to the carburetor that carries the gas due to a leak. I hope my old engines has this tube. I haven't had the opportunity to look.

Just finished replacing the fuel filter inside the fuel pump. Not an easy job for sure. Not much room to work or even see what I was doing. I fiddled with putting it back together for awhile and was unsuccessful. Had to find a better way. Had to Mcgiver it. Getting the 2 gaskets installed was the easy part. Here's what I came up with. I hung the bail on the motor side of the fuel pump. Then attached a rubber band from the wood next to the pump to the other side of the bail. That held the bail in place. I could then push the bail down with my left hand and seat the bowl with my right hand onto the pump. Then holding the bowl let the bail rise on the rubber band. I could then attract the other side of the bail to the pump. Still holding the bowl I tightened the screw. All that was left was to attach a safety wire. This worked first time. Good Luck.

Also the old fuel filter was in really bad condition. I mean really bad. I paid a dealer twice to replace that filter. I don't think they did. My motor did't idle very well before but now is very steady. This is a very difficult job ... I will not trust a dealer to do it again.

I pull the entire fuel pump out, so much easier. Fuel pump gasket is $3 only. Done it twice already. Trust me, easier than doing it this way.

Just get an extra fuel pump gasket as a precaution if you tear it especially 1st time taking it off if has been there a long time .

Much more easy for me to remove the whole pump from the block and turning upside down for filter change.

I have the same exact engine! Thanks for posting this vid. Have you ever change the starter solenoid on this engine. It's right above the fuel pump area, with two bolts but the nuts in the back are very hard to get to or wide enough to slide a wrench into to hold it while unscrewing it from the front. Did you have any experience with changing the solenoid yet?
@RealStuntDriver9 жыл бұрын
just inatalled new solenoid. but it's difficult to access nuts on other side on plate, so I just attached it to old one
@ccomspinanutshell44494 жыл бұрын
You don’t need to remove the bracket at all. Just bend the tabs outward and put the new solenoid in its place. No need to touch the bolts/nuts
@darrenloud40672 жыл бұрын
Done this without actually removing the bracket I managed to push the cup up and slide out after loosening the screw. Pain upside down tho and the gaskets will seat and hold in the notched ring recess

Great video. However I have never seen the gasket that goes on top of the filter stay in place while you put the cup back on. The only one that stays in place is the outer one. And my bail will not go on after the cup is in place. I have to swing it out of the way then put the cup in place with the filter gasket sitting on top of the filter then snap the bail in place and tighten it.

What about the spring that pushes up on filter?
@markus44342 жыл бұрын
only problem with taken off the pump to change the filter is, you take a chance of ripping the gasket, so have another pump gasket ready in case you do.

@paterson005 жыл бұрын
D Davidovic my issue turned out to be a faulty fuel pump. I had good suction for a while there but we managed to get the pump out and hook it up to a 12v supply, immerse it in fuel and prove that it actually wasnt working despite making all the right noises. Its in a pig of a place to get to on the 4.3 MPI.

yes you can do it that way or the other way is.......you remove the pump via 2 screws and then work on it,,,,,, you will need a gasket but its well worth the cost of the gasket via pump to block when doing it that way versus this video way....

+Felix Smolensky -- теоретически это можетбыть не проблема зажигания - а как раз бензина, может насос? или шланг заткнулся? в общем может бензина не хватает на большой мощности
