Have been struggling to remove the factory rust prevention film on your handsaw? Then watch this video and learn how to! Today I will be running through the straight forward and easy process I use to remove the clear coat rust proofing film added to handsaws at the factory. Manufacturers do this to ensure no rust forms of the saw plate while in storage no matter how long it many be.
Hope you enjoy!!

I was recommended this video because of a Reddit post I’d made, and you’ve answered all my questions. Fantastic. I had tried some Rustoleum rust remover on a hand saw blade, leaving it to bathe for about four hours. When I took it out it had these raised sections of shiny metal in blotches across the top and handle portion. I wasn’t sure if it was because I’d soaked it too long, or not long enough. It actually ended up looking pretty cool, but I really wanted to know WHY it happened so I could avoid it in the future. Your video not only answered my question and gave me some good info, but it also helped me with my other blades, which have that streaking abrasive look you mentioned. Thanks for the great video!

I just finished redoing the handle on their 12 in 13 ppi Tenon Saw. The handle turned out great. I modeled it after the Lie-Nielsen tenon saw handle. It is SOOOOO much more comfortable to use now. Well, the handle and reducing the set made this a fine saw except for that white stuff that just started apearing at the top of the plate that was actually sticky to the touch. YOU ARE RIGHT ON TIME my man. Thanks so much for this video. I tried some mineral spirits, I'm a Yank, when I got it, but nothing came off. It seemed pretty shiney anyway, and I wanted to reduce the set and make a proper handle for the saw. When I used it yesterday, the gunk appeared. Today, I found your video by accident and you fixed my saw. Many thanks. Oh, I almost forgot, the Scotch Brite is better than steel wool because it can't imbed any iron partials in the plate to rust in the future. When I was at University for engineering, my materials science professor recommended not using steel wool on anything that you don't want to rust. Then he went into a lecture about dissimilar metals.

@@SaintFredrocks Glad my video was able to help you out. Interesting about scotch Brite over steel wool as steel wool is commonly used. But i agree that scotch brite is definitely better.
@SaintFredrocks
@SaintFredrocks 4 ай бұрын
@@AussieWoodshed I think the main reason steel wool is used so commonly is the scotch brite is much newer, and many see it as plastic so it must be inferior. In the lecture that day the professor talked about dissimilar metals and the propensity for a cathodic reaction that occurs faster the more dissimilar the metals are. The example he used was the large screened in patio at his house that enclosed his back porch and pool: it was Florida. He went on to tell us how every single screw in the structure failed in a little over one year, because the metals were too dissimilar. The point being, introducing iron filings in your tools by using steel wool can cause a cathodic reaction hastening corrosion, or, as is the case here, rust.

@@AussieWoodshed I'm happy I didn't bore you. That was one of my most interesting courses. The professor was an expert witness in a lot of legal cases. One he spoke of in class that was very interesting concerned a chemical fire extinguisher that was used in small aircraft. Apparently the chemical was pretty good a putting out fires, but the side effect was that it absolutely destroyed the insulation on wiring. Someone accidently set the thing off in their plane{not in flight thankfully,) and, well you get the picture. Take it easy.

This is a constant challenge that we have to deal with. Saws, planes, chisels; you name it, they all come with various coatings to preserve the shelf life - the presentation. The coatings vary a lot so we have to figure out what they are and how to remove each type. The manufacturers could at least tell us what they use and how to remove the coatings but they don't. I go through my usual range of products and methods and they don't always work, which is annoying because after that, it's down to lots of use to remove the coating by eventually wearing it off. Thus, I now tend to watch videos like this to inform me what to use for each item because it gets frustrating when you just don't know what has been used so therefore don't know how to deal with it.

@@PeteLewisWoodwork I agree, it definitely is a bit annoying when different products are used to know what is required to break it down to remove it. I do find a lot of the films they use are alcohol based which is my first go to for removal.

@@AussieWoodshed As I said above, the manufacturers could at least give us a tip on what is used and how to remove the coatings; it isn't asking much, is it? All they need to say is "This product is coated with blah, blah, blah to preserve the presentation. To remove it, use blah, blah, blah".

If anything is really stubborn a melamine foam block (magic eraser) will do the trick. Some saws have a god awful coating that only partially comes off with alcohol. Not the s&p though. But the melamine foam block gets that other garbage off pretty well.
