1. Picts were located in what is now Aberdeenshire (North Eastern Scotland, not in the South) - early battles between picts and Romans were North of the central belt at the foot of the Grampian mountains/Firth of Forth 2. Picts did accept Christianity, gradually of course as was the case with the rest of the British Isles; Ireland and to an extent, the west of Scotland were under Christian influence from Isle of Iona and Ireland, the East (where the Picts were largely culturally separated from the West due to a vast mountain/highland range) was introduced to Christianity by Saint Colombo (famous chronicle of him baptizing Picts on the banks of Loch Ness, after one of their companions was killed by a mysterious "monster" - not kidding, its the earliest "mentioning" of the Loch Ness Monster) Problem with sources is what makes the Picts so mysterious, great vid :)

I read an account within the last year that in the 10th Century a Viking Warlord conquered Northern Scotland and held Sutherland, but initially took much more further south. During this attack, most of the Pictish Nobles and soldiers were wiped out. It was then that the Gaelic peoples from the west organized with the remainder of the Picts to drive the Vikings back, it was shortly after this that the Kingdom of Alba became powerful.

The story goes the Picts painted themselves *green* for 1) camouflage and 2) to freak out enemy soldiers. One Pict would deliberately jump on a Roman spear just so the Pict behind him would kill the Roman soldier. Total badasses. Were Picts related to Druids? Druids sacrificed somebody every fall and left the head on the porch as a warning => Jack'O'Lanterns on Halloween. True?
@kevinnorwood87822 жыл бұрын
Don’t confuse the term “Druid” with a race of people. “Druid” is actually a position in ancient Celtic societies, much like how “Viking” is actually more of a job title than a race of people. And Druids were probably the most important people in Celtic societies, rivaled only by Chieftains/Kings/Queens/etc.
@r809110302 жыл бұрын
Where does that story come from? Woad does produce a greenish-blue pigment. To get the colour Uaine (various shades of Green) Heather, Broom or Cow Weed can be used. For Goam (blue), Elderberry with Alum was commonly used. The problem with using plant dyes is that they generally require urine to be fixed into the cloth. Woad in and of itself stains blue on the skin, and would often be mixed into tallow to be used as a makeup. Picts also tended to be tattooed, although the use of plant-derived pigments for tattooing is pretty poor, and they would have likely used mineral dyes for that purpose. Roman Legionaries did not use spears. They carried Pilum, a heavy javelin, which were thrown prior to engaging in melee combat. They also fought in formations, so it is highly unlikely your story of one sacrificing their life is a common occurrence. It would be pretty stupid tactic. Druids were a class in SOME Celtic societies and were leaders of the community. Britons definitely had them, as did Gaels, although there is no recording of them, it is more likely than not there was a similar religious class among the Pictish peoples. That is conjecture though, as no historical or archeological evidence has been found one way or the other. Human sacrifice among Northern European peoples dates back to the Urnfield cultures prior to 1000 BCE. The La Tene Celtic cultures did have a tendency for head-hunting, they were a part of battle practice and mythos more so than a result of religious rites, although they did believe that by taking the head of your opponent you gained their power. Regardless, the practice of carving a lantern out of a turnip was just practical, carving a face out of them to scare off spirits during Samhain is a later cultural practice and it unrelated to the head hunting practices of earlier Celtic peoples.

They probably wouldn't have thought twice about enslaving some. But I'm sure at least some Roman Soldiers would have found those Pict Warriors Intimidating. Imagine having to fight Men who probably were Taller than You and Buck Naked with War Paint. No wonder Caesar Hadrian decided to give up and build that Wall to Try Keeping Them Out.

You gotta love the tv series called Britannia, too! If you're into England history... I just wish Boudicca is featured there as well together with other English tribes
@AeneasGemini2 жыл бұрын
@@romella_karmey Are you being serious? Boudicca is absolutely featured there, she's literally the main character. The clues are all there, they keep referring to the fact that she's got a great destiny, that's she's going to defend Britain against a conquering foe (like Boudicca fighting Rome), her family was brutally murdered by Romans (like Boudicca), she hasn't picked her adult name yet (any guesses as to what it will be?). Also, last but not least the name of the series is Britannia, Britannia as a figure is often thought to be based (at least visually) on the stories of Boudicca. It's not been confirmed, but five will give you ten that will be one of the big reveals to happen in the series.

"In a letter, St. Patrick turned against his own countrymen, calling them 'apostates as bad as the Irish'." Why the hell is that guy considered a saint or even a good person? Every story about Patrick is like, "He walked up to a group of pagans who were minding their own business and told them they were worshiping false gods and/or he did something to blatantly disrespect the locals' sacred traditions. Then he acted shocked and disgusted when he didn't get the responses he wanted." He either genuinely believed in his mission so much it made him a fanatic or he saw Christianity as a way to lord power over his former captors, but either way, Patrick comes across to me as a condescending asshole.

It was my understanding that the Picts were in Scotland first (whatever it was called back then) and some of the Irish joined at some point and the Scots are the generations following that union....it is also possible that other groups joined. Discovering the gene marker is pretty awesome.
@oddindian12 жыл бұрын
The be clear the Picts were not Scotts. We are not even sure if they were Britons as they were said to speak an entirely different language. The Kingdom of Dál Riada existed in Ulster and the western isles which was of Irish Gaelic origin. The Scottish people are a fusion of the Cumbrian Britons, Anglo-Saxons, Normans, Norse, Dál Riadan Irish, and the "Picts (The Painted Ones)." We have no information as to the cultural name of these people beyond their nickname based on their appearance.

Firstly, Picts extended right up to the north of Scotland via the east through modern Fife, Dundee and Aberdeen. It’s thought they originally extended to the west but were either chased out or bred out by the Gaels and the Scotti (from whom Scotland takes its name). Several Pictish tribes were absolutely known to the Romans, including the Caledonii (after which they named Scotland) and the Maeatae, between both of whom modern Scotland was divided. The Romans are thought to have ‘owned’ as far north as the River Clyde and Alt Clut (the Rock on the River) which is modern day Dumbarton - named after Dunn Breatann, the fortress of the Britons in Gaelic. The area of Alt Clut, from which the Clyde gets it’s name, was part of the territory of the Atticottii, a client tribe of the Caledonii. The Romans thought the tribes ‘uncivilised’ because they didn’t build towns, but moved around their territory sleeping in tents. There are remnants of the Atticottii that have survived to this day, such as the Cochno Stones and several burial mounds in the area Also, Gaelic is not ‘gay-lick’ in a Scotland. It’s ‘Gah-lic’ - the former is Irish Good job on Alba, though. Even many Scots pronounce it as it’s written, rather than with the hard L and the more rounded A to make the sounding of the world Ulubu Kilts we’re brought to Scotland by the Norse, Tartan is from the French word ‘ and clan tartan was actually a con by 2 English brothers looking to cash in on the Scottish popularity of the 18th Century when the act of union sent a wave of Scottish popularity down south’, bagpipes and whisky were almost certainly brought to Scotland by the Romans, as was haggis. It feels like there is a mixing up of Picts, Celts and the Gallic tribes that inhabited the south of England (the clue is in names that appear in the south of England also appear in the North of France) The Bede history is a nonsense. The Picts were on the lands of modern Scotland before the Scotti or the Scots. There were certainly no kings, but clan chieftains It’s also important to note that Picts didn’t have horses. In fact, they wouldn’t have known what a horse was until the Romans.
