First of all i have to say thanks so much for this video to my knowledge its the only one ive seen on youtube showing the differences between Subarus two 6 cyl engines. Awesome awesome job! You clearly showed now why you much prefer the EG33 but i have to say im confused since one of the main guys to work on the EZ30 on youtube from The Skid Factory says the EZ30 is very strong and can take a lot of boost no problems [he covered this in one of his videos not long ago], but he didnt show evidence unlike how you have done here. I guess this is the reason why not many people have modded the EZ30 hard. Finally i have to say here in Australia at least the EZ30 is absolutely not known for head gasket issues at all. its pretty much regarded as bulletproof unlike the subaru 4 cyl engines where most of these problems exist. thanks again!!
@t_z10304 жыл бұрын
There are two generations of EZ30. The first generation was made at the same time as the version of EJ25 that is now legendary for its head gasket issues. This first generation seemingly shared a similar head and gasket design to that EJ25, and suffered the same issues as a result. The second generation EZ30 has a quite different head (and by extension gasket) design, and is known to be very reliable - when stock, of course. Important to note too that both generations are officially designated as EZ30D. The 2nd gen is referred to by the community as the EZ30R to differentiate it. Obviously, this can lead to some confusion when one is reliable and one isn't. Al has turbocharged a few EZ30Rs now, and they seem to do quite well. But like you would expect from a man of his experience, he keeps the boost fairly low on unopened aspirated engines (around 10 PSI ish). These cars are also street cars, so they aren't experiencing the huge constant stress of a race engine. Not to mention that Al normally puts them on E85 which keeps cylinder temps and the risk of knocking down. I really like the EZ30 (I own a Liberty 3.0R-B) but if you were to spend the money building a motor, the EG33 is the better option for your dollars. It's much better for boost, and performance internals are readily available for them because they share so much with the EJ. And if the EG33 is physically too big for whatever you're doing, you'd still skip the EZ30 and go with an EJ20/25 because it would be so much cheaper and easier to build, and there are well known formulas for how much power you can make and how reliably.

@@t_z1030 awesome detailed info, appreciate it man. i own the same car 2006 vintage love it to bits!
@nfsdude01254 жыл бұрын
@@t_z1030 The first generation EZ30D was produced in 1999, the first EJ255 came about in about 2005. The heads are totally different to that generation EJ, in fact, the intake ports resemble that of a Mitsubishi 4B11T whereas the exhaust ports are similar to that of a late model VW/Audi 4 cylinder. The head gasket design between both EZ engines are remarkably similar, the primary difference is the later model head gasket has room to allow additional oil flow to allow the heads AVCS/AVLS to function. That's it. In terms of reliability, both EZ's are fairly even. At this age, the older one is seen with more leaks/blown head gaskets because it's older and likely done a lot more driving. That should be common sense. Also, you reference boost levels being low on a factory N/A engine with a CR of 10.7:1? That's not very fair, considering the majority of N/A+T EZ30s are being done with GT3076 turobchargers at a minimum, but typically using GT3576 or even GT3582 sizing, which is a very large turbo when you consider the factory turbo that is often seen on EJ engines. The EG33 is a terrific engine... if you have the money. Not only that, it is much, much larger than an EJ (for example, you would have to relocate the radiator if you were to fit an EG33 into a 2002 Legacy RS30 - which comes factory with the rather petite EZ30), also, *this* "and performance internals are readily available for them because they share so much with the EJ.", while true, is a moot point for the EZ series of engines. There is an entire aftermarket for the EZ30 now. You can just about build a high power EZ with off-the-shelf parts. However, 9 times out of 10, people just go with what they have. It's easier, and cheaper. If you're building a race car and couldn't give a shit, EG33. If you're building a street car and you want to keep it *relatively* simple, EZ. Either or, cool engines and make all the right noises. :)

No, you're not correct. Yes, EZ30 not meant to be boosted, but this is an excellent NA engine overall. (I'm not speaking of those crazy guys who made that 1200hp impreza with EZ30) The head gasket problems come basically from poor cooling, like failed fan, or low coolant, but it's ok (I guess) for a gasoline engine to require a good cooling. I've been driving H6 for 8 years, and my personal experience is rather positive. It doesn't consume oil (depends on oil though), it starts good at -30 C (and it doesn't overheat at +30 C if the cooling is ok), it never fails in any meaning and, with some service, could last for a million km for sure, and, speaking about service, you don't have to change the time belt, because there's really good chains. If you were gonna to show us some disaster by Subaru, did you consider to make a vid about diesel boxer? It would be nice to have some insight.

you gotta realize this guy has a ton of experience building subaru engines, so he’s probably seen a lot of the common failures, i’m a technician at a subaru dealership and the EZ30 leaks like a son of a bitch, the double front timing cover was a terrible idea, almost every gasket is just silicone, which is prone to leaks if not done properly, chain tensioners go bad frequently, lots of cooling issues. i agree that chains are better than belts as far as maintenance goes but for ease of assembly and disassembly i would much prefer working on an EG33. EZ30s do typically have a lot of headgasket problems but most of the time they leak externally instead of internally. not the worst engine i’ve seen but if it were my choice i would take the EG33 for the larger cylinder separation, partially closed deck, and shorter stroke for more top end hp. also parts for them are much easier to find than the EZ30.

@deathtoming2201 Жыл бұрын
The ez36 they had to make it even shorter liners to make the extra cc and they use asymmetrical rods to do so because they basically Siamesed the engine
@dennis84454 жыл бұрын
Thanks for showing me a eg33 that you can not find anywhere but your shop. Plenty of ez30 I have two of them but now you say there junk. The good old days have come and gone and all the eg33 are gone with them.

can you swap the ez30 from a tribeca for an eg33?
@5325max4 жыл бұрын
I have the same question.
@alextaitt56044 жыл бұрын
@@5325max sure, it'll mount in to the same location, although a tribecca is running an ez36 not this ez30. and you'd need to go standalone ecu, wiring merge and tune as well as fittings for anything like cooling and power steering. plus retrofit a drive by wire to ur eg throttle body. im sure there's more, but tldr, you may want to just modify that ez36 you've got unless you've got experience/bankroll to make the eg swap happen.

are EZ30 so bad? russian friends ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/rpzZmZqaj791epI ) have 399HP at the crank on stock engine with compressor? ok, it's a spec-b, but i doubt the the engine(block) is different! ok, it comes with STi 6speed gearbox.. but if it was so bad they would kill it already :D
@indyrock81487 ай бұрын
The Internet: This NA 3.0 l engine makes 180 kW and redlines at 7000 rpm stock. But it won't make 700 - 800 hp stock with a race turbo so it's garbage

@MrVitalic853 жыл бұрын
No no no this guy is bias. I bought my ez30d for 160$ canadian, good luck finding an eg33 at a bargain. The ez is fine. Not everybody have deep pocket to run a 1000hp subaru on the street. Myself I’l be fine with 350hp at the crank with low boost.
