What's quicker, the new Subaru Outback Sport XT with the 2.4 turbo or a 2005 Outback with the old 3.0L flat-6? Let's find out.
Using a well-used but well-maintained 2005 Subaru Outback 3.0R, featuring just under 210,000km on the clock, we ran some tests with a Racelogic Vbox on the usual private road that we use for all performance testing to see what it could manage.
In factory form, this particular model specification consists of a 3.0-litre naturally-aspirated, flat-six engine that produces 180kW at an ear-tickling 6600rpm, and 297Nm at 4200rpm. It comes matched to a five-speed auto and all-wheel drive system. Subaru claimed 0-100km/h in 8.5 seconds back in the day, but with this example's relatively high kilometres, we aren't expecting much of that...

The current XT is faster, more efficient, more practical, safer and better built, so the one you should buy is obvious: an 05 to 09 clean Outback H6 😂

I tried really hard to find a 3.6R in good condition. The dealer near me had gotten a few, but they got sold so quickly. I ended up getting a 2.4l turbo.

Would be interesting to compare the new turbo Outback vs an Outback 3.6R Premium (my wife has one). The 3.6 engine is impressive for what it is an it's intended function.

Thanks for finding! Apologies for ghosting the other channel. I was planning to do a farewell video as my last, but the current owners wouldn't allow it. Yes, definitely aiming to do more of these virtual drag races in the future! 😃

I just bought an Outback today. A 2008. It's truly an amazing car. I have it in manual. Beautiful to drive. My answer to your question, is that if you have an old version competing with the new models, that's a good sign across the board for that make of car. For old and new Subaru's. I had a choice of a 2010 Liberty or a 2008 Outback, and i went with the latter.

haha love it. The FA24 may have gotten the win as expected , but it'll never match the sound of an EZ30 on song :D . That said , with a the 6 speed man behind the EZ, can almost guarantee you would have turned the tables times wise.. the old 5EAT , esp in first gen is a bit doughy. Miss our Gen4 3.0 outback dearly, but thankfully I do still have a spec b 3.0 (man) in the stable -edit, also big credit to your parents for looking after it so well.. it's mint!.

The flat-6 sounds superb. With a manual, that would be awesome. Yes, you’re right, the 5A in this is a bit laggy and sluggish at times. Hold onto your spec B!

I have an 07 Outback, manual 2.5 engine. It’s a lot of fun to drive. It will cruise at high speeds like nothing. I am sure the turbo version would be a lot of fun. Very capable vehicles, my first Subaru and I’ve been very impressed, minus some engine issues like excessive oil consumption and not impressed with the service/environment at our local dealership.

I had a 2004 Forester XS with the 2.5L manual. I bought it at 150k for 2k and sold it at 270k for 2k! The original owner replaced the engine at 100k w/ paper work. He had catastrophic engine failure but reading through the paperwork I suspect he didn’t do required maintenance. Car ran like a top for me and was a blast.

I have a 3.0 Outback from -07 and love it! The styling is so spot on, drives like a dream, engine is super smooth, so silent on idle you hardly notice it inside the cabin. But when giving it some throttle, it does move. Also a real good car to pull a caravan with!

Should pit the new XT against the Liberty GT. In the North American market Outback could be optioned with the 2.5t engine, which I think would be more fair.

So, basically the BP(2005) turbo model of Legacy/Liberty/Outback would handily beat the current turbo.

nice Just on the flat 6 re: boxer, meh never a fan of these engines, the turbo will have more bottom end punch but wont push 7,000rpm like the boxer 6 can. the other difference is CVT v torque converter. clearly the CVT without needing to upshift has the advantage.
@drivingenthusiastaustralia
@drivingenthusiastaustralia 7 ай бұрын
Yep, turbo offers great low end torque. Not to mention the 200kg weight disadvantage yet still quicker 👍
@351tgv
@351tgv 7 ай бұрын
@@drivingenthusiastaustralia - actually I the 200kg extra weight is probably an advantage to the new Outback for a safety concern. For the last what is now 13 years? I have been used to having BOOST in the midrange, A petrol i4 even with large displacement 2.5L is not the same, don't get me wrong, gearing can sort of make up for that but maths is maths and a turbo petrol making 345Nm from 2,000 to 4,500rpom clearly has more power than a NA petrol which generates peak torque 244Nm at 3,600rpm. for the record that is 130kW @ 3,60rpm for the 2.0L turbo petrol i4 92kW @ 3,600rm for the NA 2.5L i4. Difference: 39kW Back to this video, just how many times are you going to 7,000rpm? Give me bottom/mid range torque any day of the week.

The facelift 3rd gen was the golden age of the outback IMO, it was really just a regular station wagon on stilts whereas the newer ones just feel like SUVs. I didn't expect the new generation to be so much faster though!

I've seen in USA someone tested the new Outback 2.4T and it did like 5.8 seconds from 0 to 60mph which is around 6.2s from 0 to 100km/h. This was measured with Dragy Performance Meter, almost 0% slope, no rollout, car brand new completely stock. In your case the car wasn't in launch mode because in that mode it doesn't fake shift and it's faster than with those fake shifts.

I noticed that the older model has the SAME gloomy, depressing, drab, boring, outdated, coffin like interior colors as the new model. Those interior colors looked great in 1990, but now 34 years later it looks cheap with no class. People are sick and tired of those Old interior colors, but automakers really don’t give a crap about what their “Valued Customers” want. Thank goodness our Outback has Ivory interior and our Forester has saddle brown interior colors.
