My father and mother, Goldwater republicans, watched and allowed their children to watch The Waltons knowing Geer was a communist and gay. They objected to his life style and politics which they made known to us but saw no need to let it affect their viewing habits. After all, he was just an actor.

@@FactsVerse The Waltons? I haven't watched it in a long time, but, it was an integral part of my childhood. It's like asking which episode of Little House On The Prairie is my favourite; again because it's been so long since I've rewatched them, I can't think of one that stands out. I take The Waltons and LHOTP as a holistic whole and say the whole thing was just great for its time! Best wishes and thanks again.

Hooray for Grampa! He was fighting the good fight for equality, workers’ rights, and being true to himself. His ability as an actor was honed in FDR’s federal theater project which employed thousands of actors and theater workers during the Great Depression! The US economy collapsed under the GOP and Franklin Roosevelt brought it back from the dead.

He was not a communist. Lucille Ball was a Communist and she married a Cuban! Woody Guthrie was Communist, there were so many people in the entertainment industry that were black listed by McCarthyism on pure accusations. He must have been bisexual and I did know he was a botanist. I hate the way they still throw that communist accusations around without facts.

@ Read “Bound for Glory” they were called communists because in truth they were Union Organizers. They would travel to Farming Camps trying to get people out through Union Organization. Woody Guthrie wrote lyrics so these workers (prisoners of The Company Store) could hear that the world knew they were prisoners of their employer. Red River Valley, This Little Light of Mine, If I Had a Hammer, etc. Guthrie would travel to radio stations and lock himself inside, just so he could announce we know you are out there listening. It was about Organized Labor not Communism. Yet, many of these men and women of good faith were labeled Communist. They are still listed as Communist, but it was about exploitation.
