Beery was a horseman and trained pilot and served in the naval reserve with the rank of Lieutenant Commander during WW2. A noteworthy episode in Beery's life is chronicled in the fifth episode of Ken Burns' documentary The National Parks: America's Best Idea: In 1943, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed an executive order creating Jackson Hole National Monument to protect the land adjoining the Grand Tetons in Wyoming. Local ranchers, outraged at the loss of grazing lands, compared FDR's action to Hitler's taking of Austria. Led by an aging Beery, they protested by herding 500 cattle across the monument lands without a permit. Apparently while making Bad Bascomb (1946) with Margaret O'Brien he incessantly pinched her in order to throw her off.

Interesting, thank you so much for sharing this info about Wallace! Much appreciated 💕💕

Where do you come off to make videos where the actor doesn’t have a chance to defend himself. He did more off the screen helping different groups then many celebrities who don’t make waves. He was a great actor that stayed in character and didn’t take the crap the studios gave the actors….

Did he make a picture with Jackie Coogan that you keep mentioning over photos and scenes of Jackie Cooper? Do correct this.

As MGM President Louis B. Mayer said about the difficult Wallace Beery: "He may be an S.O.B., but he's our S.O.B." During the filming of THE BOWERY, George Raft and Beery were to square off in a climactic fistfight. Beery asked George if he could throw the first punch (which of course was not meant to actually connect). George said O.K. -- and then Beery let loose, not pulling his punch and knocking Raft out cold. When Raft revived he went after Beery and the two tangled for real until pulled apart by crew members. Jackie Coogan remembered that as cold and aloof that Beery was, Raft was the complete opposite and Jackie quickly bonded with Raft. Noticing their closeness, Beery, who offscreen had very little to do with his little co-star, perhaps became somewhat jealous as during the rest of the filming he began to display toward Jackie some friendship -- if not exactly affection. Jackie later wrote: "He never even bought me an ice cream cone."

How can anybody accept the credibility of this? You cannot even distinguish between Jackie Cooper and Jackie Coogan. The narration voice is robotic. This is why AI will fail in the media. It is soulless, lacking in emotion. Hire an actor to read the script. This is exactly what the recent strike in Hollywood was about. Poor job all around.

I have heard AI pronounce the same name differently. Almost alternating between the two. People will get board with AI. Algorithms on the other hand, are pretty cool.

I like the part in Jackie Cooper’s autobiography when he accidentally “shot” Wallace Beery during the making of “Treasure Island”; the two pistols he had were loaded with flash powder, so when one of them was accidentally discharged, it really stung Beery in his big toe - and the whole film crew was laughing about it! 😅 But not Jackie, he threw down the pistols and ran away crying- years later he sees Beery as a disappointment .

The child actor is Jackie COOPER, not Jackie Coogan.

Wallace Beery was very talented and I've admired his performances. That said, I've never heard anything complimentary about his personality other than from Mickey Rooney.

Not good that you talk about Jackie Coogan while showing nothing but pictures of another child actor Jackie Cooper, fire your research department. There was not a single picture of Jackie Coogan in the video. Coogan was a child actor in silent films but most of us will remember him as Uncle Fester in the Addams Family TV series. You need to do a better job with your research my friend.

I know that the cowboy star Buck Jones had a dislike for Beery! This was problematic as Jones’ daughter married Berry’s nephew,Noah Beery Jr.! Jones was extremely well liked and liked just about everyone, but had a dislike for offish behavior! Only two people were unlikable enough to qualify for that group, Ken Maynard & Wallace Beery!

It's interesting when you hear bad things about a person, but in the pics, everyone looks happy next to him (Hypocrisy? ). Wasn't there anything good about this human being? I thought the narrator wasl going to cry....

Hi. I’m Wallace Beery’s last remaining grandchild Matthew. Carol Ann Beery was my mother. His daughter. She spent countless days on set and said these accusations are BS. She said he caught Jackie Cooper picking his nose all the time. That can make a man have a bad attitude towards their costar. So much BS in this video. Believe what you wish. But watch his movies and enjoy the comedy and dark characters he did. Man of many faces. Just a terrible video here. Watch him and enjoy.

The first time I heard of Wallace Beery was in The Lost World (1925) where Beery played Professor George C Challenger. The other film was in Douglas Fairbanks in Robin Hood (1922) where Beery played Richard the Lionhearted. Both films are among my favorite Silent Films. Wallace Beery had a brother whose son was a nephew of Wallace Beery and that would be Noah Beery who I only know of being in the Matlock TV series. From what I saw in the two silent films I mentioned I always thought of him as being someone who would be hard to work with. If I remember correctly Beery also had a problem with alcohol, so that didn't help him any.

TLDR: Beery's on screen persona struck a lasting chord with moviegoers. Off camera, he was an insufferable dick.
