Jokes about flying cars and jetpacks are a common thing in America and these jokes find their origin in the 1962-animated sitcom The Jetsons. The show aired from September 23, 1962, to September 22, 1963, and was never renewed for a second season. Even then, The Jetsons played a crucial role in defining the way Americans think of the future as well as their expectations of technology. It wouldn't be wrong to say that The Jetsons is one of the most important and defining pieces of 21st-century futurism.
The Jetsons narrates the story of an upper-middle-class family residing in Orbit City. George Jetson is a Digital Index Operator and his wife, Jane, is a homemaker. The couple lives in their Skypad apartment with their teenage daughter Judy and son Elroy. The family has a dog named Astra and a robot maid named Rosie. The show did not only deliver relevant humor but also became popular for its imaginative space-age living. It's easy to fall in love with a world where domestic tasks are performed by robots, ozone-scrapping homes groom and dress their inhabitants, and people use spaceships to commute. The Jetsons raised America's hopes for the future.
At the time it first appeared on TV screens, many critics were quick to dismiss The Jetsons as just another cartoon. However, over the years, the show has had a profound impact on the way we think of the future. Though the show ran for a single season, its influence has been immense. After its premiere run, the show continued on ABC, CBS, and NBC for years. Between 1985 and 1987, many new episodes were produced for syndication. Unfortunately, in 1989, George O' Hanlon, who served as the voice of George Jetson on the show, passed away, and thereafter, no new shows were produced. The series finale came in 1990, in the form of a film titled Jetsons: The Movie. 27 years later, a direct-to-video animated movie titled Jetsons & WWE: Robo-WrestleMania! released and witnessed mediocre success.
The Jetsons may not be as funny as The Flinstones, but they provided good humor and elicited many laughs. While The Flintstones explored an era that was already well known and understood, The Jetsons forayed into unknown territory and used creative imagination to create a world that was unseen and unknown. Great animation, innovative ideas, and an absolutely fantastic theme make this show memorable in every way. In this video, we go into the future with The Jetsons and tell you ten interesting facts you didn't know about the show. Make sure to subscribe to Facts Verse!

Great bunch of facts! I loved the Jetsons. Our family saw it in color in Los Angeles when it first came out. My little sister used to cry at the end of the episodes, when George was caught on the dog walker, yelling for Jane to “stop this crazy thing!”. You see, that was our dad, George O’Hanlon. Very much enjoyed reading everyone’s comments. Dad would have loved them, too. George O’Hanlon, Jr.

That was your dad? Wow! He was brilliant as George Jetson, even in the 1990 movie (looking back, I can see that it [and possibly the 80s revival] was inferior to the 1960s TV series, but I don't agree with what people say regarding his age and health catching up with him and causing a decline in his performance[even if it did cause a bit of decline, people don't have the right to judge him harshly for that, he had no control over these things, nobody does] while recording for the movie, he was good in that too! Him and Mel Blanc) I can totally see why you're proud of him 💚💜

First he says viewership and ratings were up and then that it was a lack of color sets that caused its cancellation. How does this make any sense? If the numbers are up it tells you that people didn’t care if it was in b&w. For us EVERYTHING was in b&w anyway because we didn’t have a color set. We watched Bonanza and World of Disney in b&w ( both “transmitted In Living Color”) because they were good shows and we enjoyed them, even in b&w. They managed to stay on the air in spite of the lack of color sets, in Bonanza’s case for 14 seasons.

Being a teenager when the show debuted, no one in my circle of friends had a color TV and if they did, they watched "Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color" at the same 7:30 pm eastern time slot. Disney already had a large audience before The Jetsons premiered. Ironically, ABC owned Disneyland when it opened in 1955 but Disneyland moved their show to NBC because all NBC affiliates could show it in color. Made sense because NBC was owned by RCA, the only company making color sets back then since their patent had yet to run out. Also, The Jetsons had no continuing, week to week sponsor. Many times you would hear "The Jetsons...brought to you by ABC where you can see (name of a popular ABC prime time show). In the advertising business that was known as "unsold spots" which meant no guaranteed revenue stream for the show. Also The Jetsons had to vision to introduce other gadgets we take for granted now: The "Visaphone" used in episode 1 is now today's FaceTime/Skype/ZOOM. Students' grades were on a cassette, called "TeleTape" played on a home player, while the compact cassette was not introduced until 1964. Their flat screen TV was known as the "Televiewer" which George used to tune in the news much like we tune into CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, etc. Lektronimo, their apartment approved, nuclear powered dog is reincarnated by Sony as a $3000 robotic dog.

I have to agree on the color issue. Many TV shows in the 50's produced color episodes, such as "The Adventures of Superman", predicting that color TVs would be the next step in TV evolution. So back in 1973, Hanna-Barbera had tried to resurrect the Jetsons like they did with the Flintstones a couple years back for the 1974-75 season, and revamp it to make it a lot more like the Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show with Elroy as a teenager this time, but due to creative differences with CBS's then-president Fred Silverman, they decided to make an animated version of The Partridge Family instead, and that's how Partridge Family 2200 AD came into existence.

To us Boomers who were "cartoon watching age" when the Jetsons aired, their dog Astro's: "Rut roh, Rorge" is what we use as a signal that something is about ready to "hit the fan"...
@BROUBoomer
@BROUBoomer 4 жыл бұрын
This Boomer also used Scooby-Doo's line “rot roe Shaggy!” quite often, like earlier today, and yesterday, couple days before that... Told my mom on the phone last week “Danger Will Robinson! Danger!”. Only having 4 TV channels had all of us using the same quotes. (For youngsters it was ABC, CBS, NBC, & PBS.) I remember having to explain that to a 21 year old kid at work. He didn't understand how I had so much in common with a guy my age that grew up in Puerto Rico. Told him whether it was the island, or the peninsula (FLA), there was 4 channels, and rock and roll went around the world. So when I walked in and said “Luzy I'm home!” in my best Desi Arnaz imitation, the guy answered like Lucy. We had the oldies radio station on, I'm on one end of the aisle of the stock room, PR is on the far end, and during “Hotel California” we were facing away from each other, both playing air guitar. The 21 year old says “do you guys even know your both doing the same thing?”. I turned look at PR, and said “I'm playing base, what are you doing?”, he said “I'm playing lead.”, so I turned to the kid and said “No, we're not doing the same thing. I'd be playing air drums, but I lost my sticks.”. Poor kid thought those old people have lost their minds... That is the best part of being this old, people your age all speak the same quotes and cliches. We have a common thread holding us together, the same culture, no matter where you are from. So many TV shows made in the USA got translated and shown around the world. I just wish they would syndicate more of the shows we grew up with and play them again. Anybody else want to watch Captain Kangaroo again? But with your grandkids this time. ☺️ ✌️ 🖖 😷
