During my police career, I was watching a TV cable channel that featured old TV shows. One Dragnet episode featured Kent McCord as a rookie cop who was accused of a crime. Jack Web as Joe Friday gave a memorable speech to McCord about what he could expect if he continued as a police officer. I realized then, and now after being retired 20 years how true those words were. Thank you, Jack Web.

Love the original Dragnet from the fifties and the updated version of the sixties. I have the original series on very tapes. Love the entire cast of Dragnet. At one point most of them were good guys in one episode and bad guys in the next. Dragnet was more of a documentary to me as Jack Webb always quoted the laws. I've been a Dragnet fan for as long as I can remember. A couple of fun facts not mentioned here, many, if not all of the early TV shows were direct remakes of radio episodes using the same script. About the only thing that was changed was "The story you are about to hear..." was changed to "The story you are about to see..." Webb was also a stickler for accuracy. In one radio episode he had a detective walking across a specific room in a specific precinct. They actually went to the precinct and recorded someone walking across the room. In another episode Friday had to make a long distance call to someone in a small town in Utah. In those days making a long distance call was big deal, and we heard every step of it... the building operator verifying Friday was authorized to make the call, then her calling the local long distance operator, who connected with the operator in Sacramento, who connected with the operator in Salt Lake City, who connected with the operator in the small town, who then rang through to the house. Until I heard that I really didn't "get" why long distance calls were such a big deal in the old days.

FYI, on the ‘49 to ‘57 radio show, Friday’s first partner was “Ben Romero,” played by Barton Yarborough, who had a great distinctive voice. When Webb started the TV series in 1951, Yarborough continued in the partner role, not Ben Alexander as Frank Smith. But after I think only the second TV show Yarborough had a heart attack and died unexpectedly in December 1951, just 3 days after the TV show premiered. Webb did both radio and TV versions called “The Big Sorrow” where he covered the death, as it was legitimately impactful to him. On radio Barney Phillips filled in as partner “Sergeant Ed Jacobs” for 5 months, then Martin Milner (later Malloy in Webb’s “Adam-12”) filled in for a while as partner “Bill Lockwood” until Friday got his new radio partner Frank Smith, first played by Herb Ellis, then Ben Alexander for the rest of 1952 and through 1959.

Yarborough was in the first episode of the first of the 50s TV show but shortly afterwards had a heart and attack and died. He was replaced by Ben Alexander who played Sergeant Frank Smith. Some say that the badge number 714 was taken because of Babe Ruth's home run record. Webb was buried with a replica LAPD 714 badge. Jack Webb was offered the role of Dean Wormer in the film "Animal house" but turned it down. He felt it would depreciate the image of Joe Friday. Henry Morgan appeared in the 40s radio series for a couple of episodes. I believe that after the Dragnet show in the 60s, Webb produced "1 Adam 12" to attract young capable men to a police department career. There were a cast of characters who played different characters in different episodes in the 50s and 60s Dragnet. It was the same actor but in a different role. They were friends of Jack Webb. The character who played Blue Boy was Michael Burns. He stopped acting to pursue an academic career. He graduated with a PHD in history from Yale and was a noted professor. Can you do facts about In The Heat Of The Night Movie & TV Show.
@2004mojo2 ай бұрын
How or why was Joe Friday's first partner not mentioned? Sgt. Ben Romero (played by Barton Yarborough) was also his partner on the radio series first. Yarborough died of a heart attack in 1951 after completion of the second episode of the tv series .The 8th episode of the radio series titiled . "The Big Sorrow" had Friday dealing with Romero's death. The like-named television episode, which was broadcast on September 25, 1952, opened with star Jack Webb reciting a dedication of the episode to Yarborough's memory. Considering his history with the radio show & friendship with Jack Webb he deserved a mention in these facts. Friday had another partner for a couple of the tv episodes then he was paired with Frank Smith played by Ben Alexander.

I have Always loved Dragnet. And the late 60's to this day, remain honest in how society's problems aren't far from then to Now. Only the innocent are far less in the Smartphone world.

@@FactsVerse , BEST ?! AAAAAAAÀ, Yeah, to many and I love both the Radio shows and TV shows. It's just to bad that we can't update the old shows to get Society on board.

My favorite episode is the one when he explained the importance of being a policeman to a younger policeman. Although, I can't remember the name, I think Kent McCord was in it, it still remains in my memory.

It's not "all we want are the facts, ma'am", it's "just the facts ma'am, just the facts". Freeburg also did an audio parody of Dragnet in which Joe Friday convinces a sceptic that Santa Claus is real.

When I was promoted to Sergeant in the Sheriffs Office the Sheriff presented me with the Sergeant's badge number 714, I laughed. After the ceremony the Sheriff asked me why I laughed and I showed him the badge and explained, Joe Friday, Dragnet, Sergenant's badge 714. He got it and laughed. When I retired I took the badge with me and I have it in a shadow box with my other stuff. No one was getting that badge back from me. It is now officially retired. :-)

I feel the reason L.A. Dragnet failed in comparison with it's 1950s and 1960s half hour counterpart is that Joe Friday (O'neal) did very little field work while Joe Friday (Webb) was constantly where the action was. Friday's partner and other detectives did the hard work in 2003 while Friday sat at the station. I said most of the time, not all the time.

The original radio (and then tv) program scripts were formulaic, but the formula worked. Stick to the proven script.

Say what you want about Jack Webb, but his shows were among the most racially diverse of his time, or even now. He HATED hippies, but he still supported their right to protest. Watch any one of his shows, and you’ll see minorities cast as doctors, store owners, police officers and more. They weren’t just “perps”, as in so many other police shows.
@sharonwolfe52104 жыл бұрын
One perp was being a prick to a black officer, and Friday dressed him down for it like a boss..

It's funny that you mention that, as there was one when they were on a TV show telling a short Mexican guy that he wouldn't be hired because of his short height rather than his nationality. It made me think of Gannon...

No kidding? I’ve watched Morgan for years, in everything from early Hollywood films he made, to Dragnet, to MASH, to “The Shootist” with John Wayne. No idea he was that short.
