Smooth Criminal was a tribute to Astaire, who died a month before MJ released his album "Bad". It was ON PURPOSE MJ used so much references to Fred, since it (also his autobiography in 1988) was dedicated to Fred Astaire. MJ was a HUGE fan of Band Wagon, he used certain elements of tje movie repeatedly in his art. If you know the movie you'll understand why.

Additionally, mj also took from Marlon Brando in guys and dolls. The coming down the steps at the break and intercepting dudes rolling dice

I saw my first Fred Astaire Ginger Rogers movie - Top Hat. You also see them doing the moonwalk there. It was immediately obvious how MJ must have been inspired by the master

That dance piece Fred did with the lady in the red dress was everything and should STILL be talked about to this day. The choreographers with DEFINATELY on point. Boy do I wish to dance like that. They're even dancing better than artists and dancers today of our time and this was ling before I and my parents were born but it STILL hits today. This is more than art this is a masterpiece. A world of its own.

I'd never seen this before or had any idea it existed. It is a key moment in the evolution of dance from the old tap/ballet to the new style of dramatic posing interspersed with quick steps and spins. And there you have the master, Astaire, doing it at the highest level of excellence. This was an eye-opener for sure. He brought the art form full circle, from old school to new. Jackson's music was the perfect background. Well done.

Fred was well past his sell by date in this clip, but still magic. Watch him as a young man, unmatchable. Even the great Gene Kelly said he was just a hoofer compared to Fred.
@doctormorbius64302 жыл бұрын
Kelly was extremely polite. As one dance critic said, "If you consider Fred Astaire's debonair style to be perfection, of course Gene Kelly is going to fall short. But in ballet and other forms of dance, this idea of perfection is just a myth."
