I make an attempt at explaining the recast controversy in the BJD (ball jointed doll) community, offering both sides of the argument for you to take into consideration.
Please do be kind, I literally just believe in providing people with information and I have no real opinion on this issue.
*My remark about only having 1 comment on the reddit post was accurate for the time of filming

The fact that people don't even want to talk about it within their own community is why so many people end up buying fake ones and not realizing it. The community itself is too tightly woven and even if you do have a real one there's a lot of judgment and bullying going on based on what doll you bought, the clothes, the skin color, the theme Etc. There's a lot of internal problems that never been addressed but anybody outside or new to the community gets instantly attacked for not knowing as much as they do, it's really ass backwards.

You said it all. IMO the toxicity the community put on new members can be more harmful than recasts, it pushes people away and can hurt people for not feeling accepted or welcomed

That is why I am not in the bjd community. To toxic and not helpful in anyway, I own 4 bjds, two are fakes/recasts, one its a 3d printed doll from an etsy seller and then other is from sio2 bjd. No one has commented on my dolls yet, since I don't tag the bjd community. I am part of the smartdoll community though and we have controversy over their as well.

Just to add more confusion- The artist/sculptor does not always stay with a company. Sometimes they sculpt a group of heads for a flat fee & move on, never receiving any "royalties" no matter how many dolls are produced from their original work. No, you cannot always tell if a doll is a recast from the resin. Pigmentation, translucency, & smoothness can vary in legit dolls made just a year apart.
@jpsholland
@jpsholland Жыл бұрын
I also want to add more confusion. Some "recast companies" (mind the quotes) are legally "recasting" older doll sculpts. I know that Dollzone sold old, out of production molds and agreed with the reuse of them. So the dolls from that mold are not recasts, but licensed dolls. Dollzone who started out as a recaster by the way. And some more confusion: A Chinese made recast of a legit Chinese company is not a recast. China is a communist country, and go by the "one for all, all for one" lifestyle approach. Therefore copyright and patents does not exist and are even not allowed by the law. So if the Chinese company Oueneifs make a recast of a also Chinese Doll Chateau, it by their standards not a crime.

I stopped talking to other bjd owners because I'm afraid of being yelled at for possibly owning a recast when it was the only place I could find the particular doll (a Hujoo Pheobe). I want to buy my first bjd, second hand would be great, but theres no where I can go except DoA to find legit dolls and I refuse to go on DoA because I've seen witch hunts happen from there because someone owns a recast unknowingly.

i dont know if the problem is even recasts themselves, truthfully. i’ve seen plenty of people in the community speak down on and chastise resinsoul owners just as harshly. i’ve seen more than one person say that resinsoul dolls are not even real bjds because they are so cheap. i’ve started to think a large part of the anti-recast persecution is the price you spend on your doll. “the less you spend, the less respect you earn in the community” sort-of situation... very classist.

That's not the angle I would take. You're taking the money away from the actual people that have taken that time, effort and financial investment in selling their artwork. These are luxury items, let's be clear about this. Your excuse for wanting them is incredibly childish, it really is. Try taking some genuine responsibility for this thinking than blaming other people because they can actually see morally how wrong it is. You have some serious growing up to do.

@@AllIsWellaus its literally just a doll mate, what are you so pressed about? not everything has to be expensive or a 'luxury item' like dude, you do know that your one of the reasons why this community is so toxic? like not everyone is gonna pay thousands of dollars for a doll when they just start in the industry, like, take in consideration that alot of new bjd collectors such as me, are still underage? we dont get paid nearly enough to get a doll from a high end brand, so your comment is absolutely ridiculous, price does not equal quality, i've seen bjd dolls that were super expensive and look super bad, same goes for cheaper ones looking high end, the owners off the doll companies usually target a specific group of people when it comes to pricing, like i only get 20 dollars a month, i would not be able to buy an high end doll since i also have to pay for other things such as food, clothes and other neccesitys, so just bc an doll isnt expensive doesnt mean its less worthy, almost every legit bjd company makes great quality dolls, they just choose their pricing, some are cheaper and some are more expensive, usually the cheaper ones are targeted at beginners or bjd collectors that dont make alot of money, and the more expensive ones are more targeted to people with a higher income

From what I noticed even in the comments is that a lot of original bjd owners are toxic and act as if they're better than anyone...while recast buyers are far more supportive and understanding...and while I understand that recast industry is harmful to small bjd companies, at the end of the day it's your doll and as long as it gives you joy, why should it matter to anyone to take that happiness from you? Bjd hobby should be inclusive and support creativity. It's sad to watch how "the elite" lash out on other people and causes nothing but anxiety and shame.

100% agree. Like i understand there could be credit and copyright problems regarding the recasted dolls, and i also wouldn't mind at all (and even support them) when people encourage bjd buyers to buy doll that has its original model if possible. However, I do think some original doll owners are getting too far, and go on criticising anyone who owns a recast. even including the one that don't know the doll was a recast when they were buying it and certain dolls which has just happened to be product offered by a company that has controversies or problems before (so the doll may actually isn't a recast but an original one). And even i myself is an orginal bjd owner, I definitely don't think these behaviors of criticising others not being as good as them are justified.

When I first got into BJD I didn't know recast was a thing. I was on aliexpress Because I get my clothes from there and saw BJD dolls. I was amazed that they were only like 60$ instead of 400$ for a minifee. Also the tan from the recast companies is made better than the real fairyland brand. I always see everyone complaining about seamlines but I seriously can't relate with my fairyland recast. I own real legit Harucasting and maskcat dolls but I know that they put effort into these dolls and they have no seams. It is almost like smaller companies care more than bigger ones. Edit: Also you'll get killed if you mention recast anywhere. I just wish people would raise awareness instead of shutting everyone down who asks.

"It is almost like smaller companies care more than bigger ones." This is it. This is exactly what it is about. Most people dont know that large companies like Fairlyland are owned by multi billion dollar investment companies who own many other companies of all trades. They just jumped in the hobby for maxing the profit. Fairlyland is cheating their customers and should never sell a doll again. They have the most expansive dolls for the lowest quality and service. But apparently, cheating you customers is allowed if the doll has a high cuteness factor and equally high price tag. The fact this companies are so well know over companies like Lillycat is that this big investors have millions to spend on commercials. And that works.

The artist was very nice tho, she said she so sorry because she is an anti-recasting so she won't do faceup for recast doll. I don't even know recast was a thing. I saw a nice doll on taobao that caught my attention and it was cheap so i bought it and that is. I'm not mad tho because the artist is very nice but i'm a bit sad because my little doll got rejected because she is a recast. And tbh i'm thinking about getting the legit doll of my recast tho. Hope that would help the original artist.

I bought two dolls at aliexpress because I buy everything there and there were just dolls with a look I was searching for, never would have thought the idea was stolen from an artist. When I saw the price of a real deal, I would never have been able to afford them. I thought they were already expensive at aliexpress but 800$ for a doll? I would forever feel scammed. What I bought was just the base for me, I wanted to make clothes and wigs for them myself to achieve that look I was aiming for. And it all seemed to be real fun and satisfying. Thankfully I didn't ever thought of joining any bjd community cause they would probably blast me xD

I'm looking for a tan doll for a Latina character I write in my fiction novels. I have found it's very difficult to find a doll in the right skin tone that is affordable. (also preferably one that doesn't take 6+months to get here. I've noticed a lot of BJD's take several months to ship. This is mostly because I'm impatient, I will not wait months upon months for something to ship.) From what I've discovered about the BJD community, they can be really scary and toxic. I don't want to join the community as much as I just want to buy a pretty doll every so often and take pretty pictures, maybe try some stop motion videos.

Hey, anti-recast and anti-bullying BJD lover here. Just wanted to say I think you did a great job portraying both sides of the argument. While I don't support recasts, as they (usually) do harm to small artists, I really wish people in the hobby could be a little kinder and more understanding, especially in the cases of uninformed newbies. No one is going to convince anyone to change their mind or educate them by harassing them and being an asshole. As for the "using a recast for practice" argument, I wanted to mention that there are cheap legit heads, some made specifically for practice, or vinyl Obitsu/Parabox heads (which I've used for practice) for about $20 USD or less. And then there's the second-hand "junk" doll option too.

I'll admit I'm anti-recast, just as an artist I understand the frustration when someone takes your work only to turn around and claim it as their own/make a profit. HOWEVER, the bjd community needs to desperately change. It is revolting to see how some people are treated for buying recasts, and like people have mentioned with Nextgen, I was disgusted with how she was treated. When I saw her get the bjd I was so excited to see her being introduced to the community, as there are some lovely people. But seeing how she was treated...I was just horrified. I'm not surprised that would discourage anyone from the community. The bjd community is tearing itself apart with this toxic attitude when it is meant to be a community based on creation and sharing your characters with each other.

From inside the BJD community, I will say that the community is uniquely toxic and difficult in general and I don't blame people for avoiding us. I would place myself in the "pro-artist" camp, but the way that pro-artist people dogpile and abuse clueless newbies is completely unacceptable. More often than not the vitriol either pushes them out of the community completely or causes them to avoid the "legit" community in favor of the more accepting and friendly recast community. Also what you said about recast information being inaccurate and unhelpful is SPOT ON. Not only is the information totally inaccessible to newbies, it's also factually incorrect or out of date most of the time. For example, a lot of sources claim that recasts have noticeably poor quality (seam lines, color inconsistency, etc.) but nowadays recasters have quality identical to or better than the real thing.

My issue with the whole topic comes from when I started people advised buying a cheaper company (mirodoll) to get a more affordable legit. So I bought a miro body to go with a head I picked personally. It was my first doll. I made the faceup and picked everything. I was super proud then.. years later Mirodoll got accused of using Impldoll's sculpt. Now it's a banned company to discuss in community spaces or doll to show. There was absolutely no signs of this and people even recommended miro back when I bought. It sucks my first bjd got hit by a ban I could of never seen coming. A lot of people would probably recommend just getting a new legit body but I do have some attachments to the original because she was bought when I was going through some therapy. She was what got me to start to go out to socialize again and talk to people and helped mediate my panic attacks a lil. I wish there was some middle ground for people who bought legit but then the company got banned like 2 years or 4 years later.

I'm on the fence with this. While yes, I do agree with support the artist, I can also understand why people buy a recast. Not everyone can throw hundreds to thousands of dollars [yes, I have seen them go up to $2,000 for a limited edition doll with face-up, outfit and any extra parts if they have a different form] on a doll. and someone mentioned Nextgen, I had no idea she was treated so badly over a doll. No offense but at the end of the day, it's just a doll. and yes, the community needs to start changing and not be so toxic. When I first started looking into BJDs I liked them because I like to write stories and I thought it would be really cool to have a blank doll that could be turned into a character you've created in your mind. So I started watching videos and I would hear recast but had no clue what it meant. I actually thought it meant that it was like a repaired or refurbished doll and that was why it was so cheap. After watching several videos I eventually realized what it meant but it honestly took a long time. However, when I started really thinking of making a purchase I started focusing more on box-opening videos in particular. I watched these type of videos from both legit buyers and recast buyers. I started to notice this crazy pattern where a legit buyer would open a box and there would be some kind of flaw or just outright got sent the wrong thing and this is a buyer that has probably spent over $500 and also waited 6 months to a year to receive this product. Recast box opening on the other hand featured buyers pleasantly surprised at how fast they got their doll or how pretty it was and how smooth the resin felt. I didn't see a benefit for me as the buyer to purchasing something that was likely going to disappoint me. I have bought a few recast dolls some impressed me and some didn't but I wasn't upset because I didn't break the bank to get them. I did recently buy a smart doll which is a vinyl bjd and all I can think is I can't beleive I spent over 600 for this.

I was still thinking of getting the girl because I was honestly seeing her in my dreams but then I got to thinking here I was about to spend over 300 dollars (which could get me a couple recasts) and this company couldn't even bother to send some pics that they should have on hand. If anyone ever says anything to me about my recasts I will always use this is as a defense I am not going to worry about a company that doesn't care about me as a customer. And they must not be hurting for sales because if I had a store and I had someone on the hook for 300 dollars you can bet I would be sending pictures of whatever they ask. I sell on mercari and I have hustled more to make a 15 dollar sale.

What timing that I came across this video today. And reading through the comments gave me hope that there really are good people in the world, who don't look for opportunities to judge someone and make them feel like traitors. // I am new to the BJD world, and now can't even say 'new to the community' because I probalby will never be accepted in it, or fit in. My first doll was a recast when I didn't even know anything at all about recasts. In fact, I have two more coming, when I just today found out about recasts. So what do I do? Reject them? Or keep them in a closet? The reason I bought a BJD when I first came across them, was because they are so adorable AND they make me feel happy. Whether I'm nurturing my inner child (as my daughter says) or what, I don't know and does it matter? If they make me happy, I should't have to justisfy owning one. It is what it is and I don't want to lose that feeling. They have also inspired me to get back into crafting and sewing, and I am looking forward to creating unique and cute doll clothes and accessories. That after going through over two years of a dry spell with creativity and motivation. So no, I will not lock them up or feel bad for buying them. I DO, however, feel bad that there are so many people in the BJD community who are so quick to judge and hate others, especially newbies like me who have had no intention of hurting anyone by my purchase. And just one more thing, that someone else mentioned. If not for recasts (and I'm not saying I will continue to buy them) I probably wouldn't own a BJD at all. I can't afford the price tag of one, at least not now.

It really is very simple: I just ordered a recast today, it's my very first BJD, the original artist did not lose a sale because I would never have been able to afford them anyway. But one day, when I can afford to not freeze to death in winter, I will have extra to buy a real one. People need to be nicer, kinder, and more understanding. Us poor people would like a damn doll too.

As someone who has tried to create a channel that is welcoming to newbies I am now bombarded (in a good way) on a daily basis by new people who tell me horror stories of how they are treated for asking questions. My advice for older members in the community is to steer clear of newbies if they irritate you because honestly everyone starts somewhere and they are most often asking genuine questions not trying to step on toes or exploit anyone.

As a doll artist I’d like to say the following: the cost of BJDs vs recast doesn’t go down from remasters using the same mold over and over. They don’t have developmental costs. If I sculpt a BJD from scratch it takes months, maybe a year. Even if I only want to get an average wage from selling my doll it has to pay for this year of working on the doll. So even as a small new artist if I sell maybe 50 dolls I need to charge 400 dollars for a blank doll so I can live. Many pro recast people claim a true artist doesn’t do it for the money. We should have a second, “real” job. That’s ridiculous. It took years to learn my skills, a year to make the doll. Most BJD artists won’t get rich from this. 100 thousand dollars a year a very rare. Any Popstar earns millions with their “ art” that other people mostly did for them and no one calls them fake. They get paid what the market pays them. But I can say also this: many companies use the same sculpt for years, they overcharge. They take extremely long to ship out dolls because they are understaffed to get more profits. Personally I don’t like paying for something I get in 6 months. The problem is that remasters don’t produce new dolls so we need the artists or the hobby dies. I wouldn’t attack someone for buying a recast. I understand that not everyone can buy an expensive doll. But I think the BJD community needs more love for more affordable dolls. I love little harmony dolls, they’re 270 for a blank doll. You can have her fully done for under 350 dollars, but these dolls and the even cheaper ones don’t get enough love. Resin soul has some great sculpts. The new doll leaves msd body is super nice. 159 dollars for a blank doll. My tip, use Denverdoll emporium, if you order per layaway they already order the doll for you after first installment. So after three months when the doll is done you paid in multiple installments. You can take 6 or 9 months for that.

I can sympathise with the sentiment of respecting an artist's work. However, as someone who's wanted a BJD for years but simply doesn't have the money, I don't think it's necessary to crucify someone for wanting to find a cheaper alternative for a non-essential item. I mean, we do it everyday, from DIYs to tutorials on "How to make your own--". Are you also going to crucify people copying a Thai food recipe from the Internet instead of travelling overseas to buy it from local cooks? Personally, I don't want to risk spending more than $200 on a hobby I don't even know if I'm gonna like so I'll most likely purchase my first doll recast. I'd love to get a second-hand one but the only marketplace anyone talks about is Den Of Angels and the requirements to join are just ridiculous for someone with no experience whatsoever. How am I supposed to know what to talk about to meet the 40-post quota over the span of two months??

There’s lots of options for cheaper dolls that aren’t recasts nowadays though. Blind-box or other small 1/12 scale dolls from places like Kikagoods and Bonbon Galaxy are great little entry points to test the waters, and they’ve got some amazingly interesting and diverse designs and body types. They’ve actually become one of my favorite types to collect these days. And brands like ResinSoul and Bobobie have really affordable options in larger 1/6 and 1/4 scale. In this era I don’t think cost is really an acceptable defense of recasts.

I'm not part of the bjd community, and I never looked into that, I know they exist and that's it. I saw both videos on nexgen channel, and only the first on the doll circle. For me it looked like some people took it too personal, like they get their feelings hurt when someone buy a recast. But we need to remind it is a company making the doll, and another company recasting the doll. In a similar fashion you can easily see people on Instagram fighting over Mattel and Mga's dolls quality and originality, it's okay to prefer one doll over the other but fighting on the internet, or bullying someone for their opinion, it's a waste of time because that doesn't change the dolls in any way or makes the company see what's costumers actually want. I'm just trying to say this: be kind to other people and if they are knew to something you like be nice to then and teach then in a kind way.

Thank you for posting this video and clarifying the issues surrounding recasts. I bought three BJD dolls several years ago on the secondhand market, two of them recasts, when I had some money to invest in the hobby and wanted some dolls to learn to do faceups. The two recasts were advertised as recasts and are very well done. The sellers didn't do the recasts, as far as I know, just downsizing their collections. I had done a bit of research before buying them, so knew what I was getting, although I wasn't aware the issues were so huge in the BJD community. However, we're talking about paying, at the time, $125 and $150, as opposed to paying $200 to $300 and upwards of $400 to $500, respectively. Also, the more expensive one was out of production, which I imagine is the reason it was recast. Not to justify that I purchased recasts, just that monetarily I personally don't have $300 to $500 to spend on one doll, so I guess technically I shouldn't even buy BJDs at all, which I haven't since then. Sadly, I've found the toxicity in some of the doll collecting community just as bad as the toxicity in the videogaming community (I play videogames too). I just think there are toxic people everywhere, which is one reason I keep my doll collecting and videogaming pretty much private and don't participate in those communities much anymore, except for my posting here (which hopefully won't get too much hate because I bought recasts). If the time ever comes, I'll probably just donate them to someone who'll appreciate them, in spite of. For now, I'll just enjoy them privately, along with my other dolls.

I read someone describe the way a lot of collectors treat their dolls like diamonds. Only valuable if they're rare. Its an elitist, toxic and gatekeeping community. I'm non-com in almost every fandom/hobby I'm a part of. It isolates me and I feel very lonely sometimes because especially with bjd, I don't even want to talk to anyone because I know ANY "wrong" move, "wrong" sculpt, "wrong" theme will land me blacklisted to hell.

I did a lot of research before buying my first BJD. He is an Impldoll Chad (with two little ones as an event gift). So, I never fell into the trap of recasts. I personally don't like recasts. Especially, how recasters try to make the dolls seem genuine, even going so far as having fancy packaging and fake COA's! But I would NEVER look down and hate anyone for having a recast. It is the recasters that need to be focused since they are the ones that are selling fakes and stealing money from small companies. But if someone doesn't know their doll is a recast, or even decided to knowingly buy recasts, I would never hate on them, because while the latter is more... immoral than unknowingly buying a recast, I am not that kind of person to hate on people. I don't like hating on others. I call myself Pro Artist, Anti Hate. I am just a kind person so I wouldn't want to hate on anyone. I am more on the outskirts of the community though, so I haven't seen that much hate and bullying for people that have recasts. I generally stay away from getting into debates and stuff. I keep to myself, which is the best thing if you want to stay away from the drama. Great video!

I appreciate hearing your thoughts on this topic! Being an artists who customizes bjd dolls to the point where it changes the doll completely I'd really not want to do that to a 1500$ doll and much rather an 80$ doll off of Aliexpress. It's because if I want a legit doll and to keep it the way it is with out any alts done to it then I'd buy it directly from the artist/doll company. There are gorgeous animal bjds that aren't worth 'destroying' the beauty of the hard work that was put into them. I've not seen anyone else do what I do in the bjd community but I also do not actively participate in it (due to drama ect. I've heard about.) I've also heard that a community can't dictate what people buy but I guess gate keeping with a doll worth a small car is one way to show status. Personal recasting is probably a huge red flag to that community as well but very iffy where it stands. I don't know the laws on if you recast a recast then what even is that doll? But the resin used for most buds are very delicate and I like to man handle my dolls and have them actively with me. I don't like to worry about smudged paint or delicate parts because it's so much stress especially if this is a doll that's super dear to you. So for me personal recasting a recast would be interesting especially if it's with industrial grade resin that can take a 5 foot fall off a loft bed (long story but the doll is fine lol.) I don't recommend or condone ever selling these kinds of things though because that's just doing what 3rd party companies are doing. If it's personal use then what ever, defiantly not an easy process though. If your also able to sculpt your own dolls as well originally that's better but also a stupidly hard learning curve. Just one argument I could see for personal recasting if people were true and honestly not looking for money out of it but more so quality. Educating is probably the best way to deal with new people not knowing about what they have bought. Talking about every aspect where most of these third party sellers are and how to avoid them is also really important. Instead of hiding it why not show all the legit artists and companies that you can buy from on a list next to the ones that are cautioned to avoid. Then let people decide because it shouldn't have to come down to childish bulling because someone didn't know what they had bought 'wasn't allowed in a community.' Constructive criticism is much more effect then distructive after all we are all adults playing dolls here.

Than you for presenting a video which looks fairly at both sides. The first bjd that I bought was a recast, but I didn't realize that it was. Whenever I searched on bjd artists/company's sites, oftentimes the doll I wanted would be sold out, almost immediately. When I found one that showed up as available, I bought it, and even though it was cheaper than an original, for me, it was still costly. Since then I have bought both Legit and recast dolls. I noticed that now, many doll artists and companies have what they call pre-orders. So you order (and pay for) a doll ahead of time, and wait a long time for it. Although I've always had good results for both recast and legit, I have seen videos where someone bought a very expensive doll, and there were things wrong with it, when it arrived. My taste in the dolls now runs to the Russian artists, they do beautiful work.

I just don't understand why there isn't more information about this anywhere, in a way that can help new comers in not buying fake or poor quality items. Because it's not like recasts are cheap to most people $150-$200 is still a TON of money to spend on a hobby item. I have only just bought my very first doll this year, more than a decade after first discovering the hobby. Thank you so much for this video. I have collected dolls for years, everything from Sindy/Barbie, Pippa, Paola Reina etc. but the only resin BJD I own is a Mystic Kids Lillian doll that a friend gifted me. I loved her pose ability so much, I bought a Smart Doll (which some people will likely tell me isn't a real BJD since they aren't made from resin) , which I love but so wanted a boy Smart doll to keep her company. I am totally new to collecting BJD s and the little I have learned about them is that Danny Choo only releases boy dolls once in a while and they sell out immediately. I love the more realistic dolls so went online to see if I could find a second hand boy Smart doll on there, no luck. So I looked for 1/3 scale male BJDs and found this stunning realistic doll, and immediately fell in love, so bought him. I didn't think about it until a few days later, went back to the sight I had ordered my doll from to find out what the doll maker was, and saw it said the doll was unbranded. I became suspicious so clicked on the seller's other items for sale and discovered hundreds and hundreds of other dolls for sale! After much research I found out eventually the doll I had bought is a recast of an Iplehouse doll, but can't find one exactly like him, so not sure what his name actually is. So.... I have sent for a recast and didn't realise I had done it. I feel really bad, but it is done and I can't undo it. My doll hasn't arrived yet so I don't know what he will be like, it worries me, but will have to wait to find out what I have bought. If I had known about recasts I wouldn't have bought the doll, but I am a complete newbie at BJDs I didn't know. I hate the idea of people stealing artists hard work, it isn't fair at all. But I have unwittingly bought one and it makes me feel bad. I have had no dealings with the "BJD community" at all, but I am horrified to read from all the comments on this video about the treatment people have received because of owning a fake doll. I don't think I want to ever be a part of a community that is so nasty to other doll owners. Dolls are my escape, they make me happy. I would never want to be hated by anyone for owning the wrong doll! So thank you again Faery Tale Dolls for your video, I have learned so much about BJDs because of your video. I have read every comment, it was so interesting and informative.

I'm an artist myself and absolutely understand the argument of the artist being the underdog and the hard work they go through to produce the product; the YEARS of practice, the 5000 sketches to get that one perfect drawing, the frustration and the pursuit of improvement, the time and effort and care going into it. I understand and support the expensive prices on original dolls and artists should be paid for their craft. But I also grew up poor, and understand shelling out the hefty prices on non-essentials just isn't it viable, but it also shouldn't hinder you from trying to have hobbies and have fun. It always put a bitter taste in my mouth when I see people say either you get the original or you aren't welcome, when that original is in the absolute HUNDREDS of dollars above the other option. It feels very elitist and pushy and just toxic. Are they gonna help you buy the original doll? They sure aren't. But they sure will judge if you and reject you if you can't or aren't willing to drain your finances on a single product. It's like the Uber vs local taxis argument. Literally the only reason I "support"/defend recasts is that it's accessible to people who aren't as privileged to afford the more expensive options.

You said it yourself right in your comment, dolls are NOT essential items. If you can’t afford something non essential then you don’t buy it. You don’t go to essentially the black market and buy an illegal copy. And I’m sorry but I’ve personally never seen excessive bullying and I think a lot of the aggression against recasts is exaggerated or fabricated, I believe a lot of people project their guilt onto pro artist members of the hobby. It’s an expensive hobby, period. We’re not being elitist or privileged we’re being realistic, I’m poor too but I budget and save and that’s how I and many other bjd owners are able to afford dolls. We aren’t a bunch of children who don’t understand how art and money and essentials work.

That's the exact point that most anti-recasts are totally missing out on: Low-income people that simply can't effort a 300-dollar doll or even save money because it gets drained by bills and taxes. They are either called "selfish" or straight-up poor-shamed.

@@michelletuband Uhm, when I was still new and joined a few recast groups out of curiosity, most people had a bunch of recasts though? Recasts still cost around $100 -$150, so they literally had thousands worth of them. They could easily get a legit minifee if they chose to. Besides, there are more affordable companies like Resinsoul or Doll Leaves, so there is no need to buy a counterfeit.

Thank you for posting this. My eye was fetched by those dolls because I came upon one that reminded me of my Daughter and Nieces. I am looking to invest in them as gifts to ALL the girls in our Family. Thank you for sharing and posting, because I know nothing of these dolls other than they are distinctive and I am a photographer and I would love to work with some creators of these dolls as a photo assignment for myself. I do appreciate the information. Great thanks from a light sculptor in the Show Me state.

i personally am neutral on recasts since it depends on what you use it for, if you for example buy a recast and customize the face with clay to make your own sculpt, i honestly think its okay, same goes for if you buy one to practice makeup with, or if you want to start the hobby but dont want to spend alot of money yet, since you dont know if you would like it, but if your gonna buy a recast and show it off as a legit doll, thats where its going wrong, since that would be rude towards the artists who made the actual dolls, but the classism is really bad, im thinking of buying a recast since i wanna try it out since ive been highly amused by these dolls since i was 13, im currently 17 so yeah, but it would take me alot of months to buy even a recast since i havent been accepted at any job yet which is kind of sad, but i hope i will be able to buy a real one in the future, i also want to buy one to practice my clothing making and wig making for dolls, and possibly in the future for actual people

In the end none of us have the authority or right to tell someone what they can and cannot purchase. I am very openly pro-recast, which does not make me a good or bad person. I’ve owned both legit and recast dolls. In my opinion, recasts tend to be better quality, though that’s simply my experience. You purchase what makes you happy and no one has the right to force you to do otherwise. I will say recasts are not for the feint of heart, you will get hated on and bullied. Take care to love what you do and be happy, ignore what others say. When you buy the off brand items at Walmart(or any other shopping store) , you’re taking from the original company. When you upsell your Rap Danni or Culur Theory Ery, you’re hurting the artist AND the second hand community. Do what you want, in the end you live with your actions.

I was scared to join the bjd community for a long time. My first doll was a gift from someone. She is most likely a recast. I've had that doll for a long time, she even spent some time in my attic because I lost interest in the hobby for a while. Once I gained interest again, I hunted her down and brought her out. I had found a facebook group that accepted both legit and recasts, and thinkin I'd fit in better with a community that wasn't so judgmental, I joined. Everyone is so open minded and friendly there, accepting even mechanical jointed dolls, which makes up 2 of my four dolls, a third one on the way. The toxic behavior of people fighting over dolls of all things is ridiculous, but I completely understand. As a long time member of the transformers community, I would never own a recast transformer figure and would probably be disappointed in someone for buying or owning one, but that's also because my transformers mean more to me than my BJDs. 3rd party figures on the other hand is a completely different story. (MMC for example, because they are fantastic quality and have such amazing detail that I haven't seen on a Hasbro or Takara figure... yet.)

I just subscribed to your channel and I don’t collect BJD’s. But the reborn community is dealing with the same issues with counterfeiting. You did very well presenting both sides. I have to say that none of the rationalizations for buying recasts are convincing. If I were a BJD collector I wouldn’t bother with recast. Honestly the buyers are responsible for keeping the counterfeit market thriving. I take a lot of time researching before I spend money on a doll. The fact that pro-artists vehemently defend their position isn’t a bad thing in my opinion. I agree with “kind discussion” but I don’t agree that there’s ever a good enough reason to support the counterfeit market.

I like the points. As someone who has owned both, I really can't pick a side. We all have bought knock offs of someone's design whether we've known it or not whether it were shoes, purses, or electronics. I like recasts for test runs, just to see if I like it. My first bjd was a recast, an iplehouse benny in tan. Tan skin is super expensive for legit dolls and hard to find on the second hand market, but super cheap for recast dolls. My first legit doll was a blank white dollzone vita, beautiful sculpt for about $240. I thought that was so expensive back then. I sold her because I didn't like the size, or so I thought. Eventually, I found the legit dolls I wanted second hand a doll chateau ingemar and a dollzone Minas in tan(she was my grail), but soon after I sold them and I left the hobby because I didn't like the dolls anymore. The companies discontinued a lot of dolls that I was planning to get. I still haven't seen a doll chateau Stacy in tan for sale. I recently decided to rejoin the hobby, and I'm doing test runs with recasts. I bought a recast popovy sister in the darkest skin, cost me less than 10% of the legit price. The doll poses beautifully, but I don't like it even the clothes from other people are outrageously expensive. I also would like to note that aside from popovy recast, a lot of recast are very well copied with more skin tone variations. I also never understood why companies didn't just "recast" their own sculpts, if they don't already. It would save more time and money.

As a BJD artist myself and being a noob at the start who DID own recasts once upon a time (i stopped about 6 years ago), its puts you in a unique position, i understand both sides and both arguments, i am not for recasting (naturally), i hate the people who do it, but i understand why they exist and gain popularity. LONG POST INCOMING: BJDs are a luxury art product, this is fact, its like art in frames or on canvas and designer wear, they are made with artistry and love, you have those who make one offs and those who just make casts of thier original and im someone who does both because i love making dolls, there are others who do this too!. Casted artist dolls are made by taking the original sculpt, known as the master, to make a mold to cast from, this is standard, some artists do it themselves or send thier master to a company like Harucasting who cast dolls by other artists and return the cast order to the artists when complete, thier service often saves artists alot of space and stress. This is partly where some confusion comes in, a recast is made from a doll cast, not a master, so there can be slight changes in size and sometimes shape, these casts are often made by chinese small time factories, there is lots of known names in the recasting world, but recasts are NOT limited to only china, some people will recast dolls and claim them as thier own creations, sadly this has happened a few times. Recasts are theft, yes its true, but a newbie wont understand that, many go through the "oh its like a knock off barbie?" "Its on sale! Wow" and so on, people arent informed, recasts are a taboo and personally i find it stupid that it's that way in the first place, the more inviting and understanding we are, the more we can educate people and show them that dolls can be just as cheap as recasts from legit companies. Facts on why not to buy a recast: 1. The dolls are stolen from artists sales and reproduced often taken sales away from the company, this hurts small artists especially, like cocoriang, Dust of Dolls and more. Those artist companies are often just 1-6 people max. 2. You can sometimes end up with a very shoddily cast doll that wont function how the original would, deformed shapes, ill fitting parts and shrinkage are common problems. 3. Recasts can often cost as much as a legit can, perhaps not from the same company, but another company often has dolls in lower price ranges, Resinsoul, Hujoo, Doll Leaves are just a few examples. 4. Recasts loose value, if you decide its not for you, you probably won't get as much as you paid back, unlike with most legits. 5. Most companies offer Layaway! And some dealerships offer them too, some offer really long ones if you need them! Payment plans are a great way to afford a legit over recasts. (Layaways are king and i use them often) reasons why people do buy them: 1. Lack of information 2. Price 3. Customisation options - this is a BIG one and il explain why. Because recasters often house counterfeit dolls from MANY companies, you have alot of hybrid options available, on top of custom colours, this makes custom doll buyers drawn to this variety of recasts, you can choose a head from one company, a body from another and parts from others and have it cast in a colour of your choice, so all these parts will match in colour. With legit buying this is difficult to do, i have done it myself before many times but your options are a bit limited i will admit, there is also getting a doll from one company casted in a colour they do not and maybe will never do. There is a HUGE market for this sort of customisation and many are drawn to it, this is where a good number of sales are made from frequent recast buyers and some first time buyers. 4. People often recieve recasts as gifts from relatives who have no clue about the BJD world. 5. For some recasts, production time is lower than the legit version.(yes this is a sad reality as to why some buy recasts) 6. You can obtain recasts of dolls that have been long sold out and discontinued. And that is the total rundown of each side, and sadly there is alot to learn on both sides. on the one side, we need to be more understanding and less hateful towards owners of recasts and educate people where possible as many recast owners move on to be legit only owners and this is wonderful! From the legit side, we need to understand WHY there is recast demand, for what reasons and what we can do to alleviate the problems in the long run, like pleading companies to offer more colours, some do! Resinsoul is a colour custom king, it would be lovely to have more like it. For customisers to open up with ideas on how to colour match dolls for hybrids and dying dolls effectively. (Dye jobs are never 100% perfect but they do open up a world of possibilities) We also need to come to a sad realisation that recasts will probably always exist, and some buyers will never stop buying them. As much as we hate this, its just the truth. The first step is educating politely and finding ways to tackle certain issues that doesnt result witch hunts. Stop bullying, it doesnt help, it makes it worse. So please, talk about recasts, be open to talk about them and research properly, stop misinformation. From a BJD artist to the people who buy recasts: Please understand how long it takes us to make a doll for casting, please realise the amount of work and trial and error that goes into every single one, please understand that this is our livelihood, some of us are mums and/or disabled and working from home and making dolls IS our job, we love it when people buy our creations FROM US, because the joy on your faces is worth the hard work, we dont just do it to make a living, we love the joy people get from owning part of ourselves in each and every doll ♡ If you are a full legit owner from past recast owner, you go dude! We thank you for making the switch and hope you enjoy every second! Not all of us Anti recasters are bitter cretins, some of us were like you once, some of us just have big hearts.

A problem with the "lost sale" argument is that it's simply not based on real human behavior. People buying a 50 bucks doll from aliexpress arent gonna shell out 600 for a legit, even if the recast wasnt available. The only exception are people who lie about recasts and call them legit in the second hand market, and even then it's a second hand market lost sale, not a lost new artist doll sale.
@Hallowchii
@Hallowchii 3 жыл бұрын
@@verybarebones actually this is particularly true with those who didnt know about the company at all or those unknowingly buying this doll becuse they havnt seen it before and "it was cute". This has happened a number of times among those who actually buy and own both legit and recast or those who just dont know. This is more commonly a problem that effects small companies and small artists who unfortunately end up getting recasted. Larger companies, yes your statement is true for the most part on human behaviour, but it doesn't mean it cant have a knock on effect, because it does, in some cases, what were just legit owners, see these dolls and the sometimes impressive quality and wait times and cave in to buy one. Recasts CAN be a stepping stone for some into the legit world but also remember lost sales for an artist is an issue still. Its like a 3rd party chinese company stealing an artists pin design and reprodcing it by the thousands and selling it, most probably dont know the artist and buy it from this other seller whilst the artist is struggling to get sales because someone stole thier work, this happens because that chinese seller can hit a wide market much faster than the artist and this is really sad. This is especially true when you look up BJDs on ebay or sometimes even google, the chinese resellers easily can dominate markets very quickly and so small artists and companies go unnoticed.

Your video is very informative and well done! I am anti-recast, but I am also anti-bully. I’ve been in the hobby for 5+ years and recasts are becoming a huge problem in the hobby. I am always open to talking about recasts and how they affect the hobby. I would never bully anyone who is considering buying a recast or someone who willingly collects them. I am against recasts as art and artists are very important to me and they deserve to paid for their work. Whenever people like me try to politely educate people (like NexJen) we get a huge backlash of “well your elitist”. It takes me months to save up for my dolls, my collection is small and we don’t have a lot of spare income. I am not living in luxury but choose to spend my money on dolls from artists; I am tired of being looked down upon because I seem to look rich somehow because I won’t buy fakes, I have to sacrifice elsewhere to afford them. Recasters know what they’re doing by sending their cheap dolls to the big doll collectors who collect “cheaper” dolls, their audience is the prime target! With a little bit of research we can all find out what recasts/counterfeit dolls are. If I were to receive a doll for review I would absolutely research it before sharing! These larger youtubers have a huge responsibility to research and only promote good products. Do they know where the dolls are made? Why are these dolls being sent with fake/forged certificate of authenticity? Recasts are cheaper for a reason, there’s no work involved in the design, they’re just copies and so there’s a smaller cost. What are the conditions in which these fakes are produced in China? I’ve seen some awful factories around the counterfeit markets, I would never want to support slave labour or bad conditions just to have a cheap doll.

I think the 2nd hand market NEEDS to change before anything purposeful happens with the recast issue. The whole "i want my money back" mentality needs to stop if we want new hobbyists to buy legit dolls and not recasts. Artists also need to be more aware of their popularity and have REGULAR pre-order periods, in order to avoid having their dolls recast. Den of Angels needs to be more transparent with their community rules and data usage. And be more open to different diacussions instead of locking a thread or banning. And, you should be able to just TALK about this issue, and HELP others go legit!! These are simple solutions but guess whos actually ready to do anything.

I bought 3 re-cast bjds when I first got into the hobby in 2020. I didn't have much knowledge, I didn't have money and I didn't know what I wanted out of getting into the hobby (and if I even had enough passion to spend money on it in the future). But buying the dolls helped me figure it out. Especially being able to handle them irl and see what it's actually like to have a bjd. All 3 dolls were different sizes. It made me realise I'm ok with 1/3, 1/4 dolls but 1/6 just isn't for me. And that I want to focus on getting 1/3rds mainly. Also made me realise I prefer dolls that lean to the anime style. And Dollfie dream & icon is probably the lines I will pay most attention to: It also made me realise I do not care much for making my own OCs with dolls. I couldn't connect to the dolls that I brought. Couldn't give them names or anything. I much prefer the idea of owning Collab DDs that are of existing characters I adore. So now here I am, a few years later, with 3 collab Dollfies pre-ordered and plans to own 8 in total. I don't really see a problem people who are fine with collection and keeping re cast's. At the end of the day if people want a pretty doll they will get Thier hands on one. It's their business. And as one of the comment says in the video: recast are akin to pirating- the person who brought a recast was probably never going to buy a doll from the original source, or will end up getting one at some point if they stay in the hobby long enough.

After purchasing a fake dollpamm out of morbid curiousity, i'm on the hunt to buy an official dollpamm (hopefully the discontinued rabbit teeth face). That way you can have yoru cheap doll to play with and the artist who spent all their time designing the doll gets their due payment too.

As an artist myself, I don’t want to be supporting a practice that hurts other artists. Though I’ll only be purchasing legit dolls from now on (I have an Iplehouse on the way), I can say that the amount of hate and aggression around this topic is scary. I understand having a passionate opinion, but creating this much fear around the topic alone is plain unnecessary and probably why so many people entering the hobby end up buying a recast by accident. Simply ASKING for information is taboo. It doesn’t matter what your opinion is, bullying people is never okay.

Personally, I wouldn’t worry about it. You didn’t know, so it can hardly be considered your fault. If you’re bothered by it, maybe you could talk to you aunt and just explain the difference in case there is a next time so it doesn’t happen again? And of course if you’re worried about the community I would refrain from posting any pictures online so that you don’t get yelled at for something you didn’t mean to happen. I hope this helps, coming from someone not in the community and who understands that it was out of your hands, I can assure you this doesn’t make you a bad person or anything ❤️

both recasters and original artists will use molds for their dolls. unless you are talking about one specific unique art piece that will cost thousands, they will all use molds to cast their dolls... also i find this discussion completely elitist, 100% 1st world problem. as someone who lives in a country in which the minimum wage is now set around 200 dollars a month, it sounds bizarre to me how middle class / rich americans will pester people for buying a $100 dollsr doll instead of a $500 dollar doll.

now as someone who owns bjds, it is pretty obvious that someone who has the financial means to buy an original will buy the original. someone who does not have the means to do that but really wants a certain doll might save for months or years and be content with the cheaper copy, so the argument that one recast bought is potentially one less original bought is flawed at best - people in my country who buy copies of anything almost certainly would not have the means to buy the original version of that product. we're talking people who barely have the means to afford food and shelter in a monthly basis, but still - shocking - want to have some access to comfort and nice things once in a while. so seeing anyone condemning people for buying recasts annoys me immensely. capitalism keeps associating personal value with consummerism, it keeps throwing infinite nice things at our faces, things we'll never be able to afford here in its peripherical areas. if something costs $500 dollars in america, it will cost 10x that in my country. and then you have infinitely privileged people looking down on us if we dare go for the possible alternatives one other interesting thing is that buying an original bjd does not have anything to do with quality. originals might have poor quality while recasts might have excellent quality. originality has little to do with guarantee of anything in this hobby - many trustworthy companies have suddenly changed practices and become unreliable, while we have recasters in the market offering support if anything goes wrong with an order

the bjd community barely even exists in my country for this reason - not only the prohibitive prices for 99% of the population, but also the saltiness of two or three bored, wealthy karens who are willing to attack everyone who says the 'wrong' thing or buys the 'wrong' doll. and the internstional community is also pretty elitist and aggressive. so... better to collect among friends and leave the 'community' to their petty dramas

I got my first BJD from AliExpress which I know is a big big no no in the BJD I tried looking into BJD websites but they are hella expensive 😭😭😭 I have been researching for years and always wanted one but sadly life throws rocks instead of lemons and after years of watching unboxing videos of beautiful/ handsome BJD also I tried looking for layaway bjd websites and I just keep hearing about scams and chickend out so after many many years like probably 10 years I gave in and gave up and bought a cheap full BJD. If people want to hate then heyyy I will never turn down free stuff!!! 🥰🥰🥰

Wait so are the originals not made from molds? Do the original designers construct each one from scratch? 🤔 (Not that it matters when it comes to the recasters stealing the designs, just tryna figure out your explanation for why the originals are expensive (which of course could just be that the creators decided they are))
@FaeryTaleDolls
@FaeryTaleDolls 3 жыл бұрын
To be perfectly honest, I am not 100% sure! From my understanding the originals are indeed made from molds, but the artist making the original makes the mold. If that makes sense. So instead of wrapping some silicone putty around an existing doll, they have to sculpt an original doll by hand and then make a mold of the original sculpt. Again, I could be completely off base here so I'm sorry if that's the case, if anyone else knows better feel free to correct me!

@@FaeryTaleDolls 👍🏻👍🏻 I did some research because I was curious, apparently they sculpt the original (I guess that part's obvious) and then work with moldmakers/casters in Asian countries to do the run of resin casts, which are sold as dolls. And that's where the limited runs come from. Which makes sense and I should have realized, since it's done the same way in ceramics. Its funny when I was learning moldmaking, we did the opposite of casting expensive things to make cheaper ones--for my project I cast a $15 silicon baby doll from Target into porcelain. We didn't really have the discussion on what casting means for intellectual property, but I was also learning in the "high art" sphere where I guess you could call it a transformative work 🤔 (which recasting is NOT)

@@Anon8848It depends really, some dollmakers make the resin (or porcelain) casts themselves, some outsource it if they don't have enough staff to handle production. Others have a different distribution method, by selling the molds themselves and the customer does the casting. This last method is less common, but it kind of fights the plagiarism issue by ensuring that their work remains accessible in the most 'unadulterated' fashion possible. The molds are cast from their final prototype doll, conceived after a long process of sculpting and testing. The limited nature of a doll isn't always related to the production method used, sometimes it relates to the contract with the artist or owner of the IP. Some companies don't employ the artist responsible for the sculpt on a long term contract, they just buy the rights to reproduce their work for a limited period of time. Hope that helps!

at 5:25 you stated that "any sale of a recast means potentially a lost sale of a small company" and I want to address that statement in particular; this argument is a kind of classist deception. In general, copied materials are bought by those who can't afford the real thing and therefore would not have bought the original no matter how much they might want to. This "lost sales" argument does not protect artists or craftspeople, it only protects capitalism and the ownership class.

That doesn't help with learning anything else like sealing a doll body or body blushing. So much can go wrong even with just sealing the doll! How is a cheap vinyl practice head going to help someone really learn how resin takes color? Yeah, it helps learn how to paint a doll face but it doesn't teach stringing, body blushing or any other very important bit of doll maintenance.
