The top could only fire 3-4 times per day. Some taking a 500kg canon ball. You can see one of them at the museum today in Istanbul. Technology won. Sultan was smart and used religious fervor, technology, superior attack/siege tactics and had a multi-ethnic force. Technology also was downfall of Ottoman empire. They forgot what made them great and post WW1, results showed.
@joannes4321
@joannes4321 3 жыл бұрын
id say the main reason the sultan won in 1453 is due to him fighting a war against a literal city. This was not the great roman empire of legend he was fighting, it was a weakened greek rump state which was attacked from every angle for about 300 years prior to this event and even before. There is nothing commendable about 1453. The romans were fish in a barrel. Only thing commendable about 1453 is the honorable Emperor Constantine XI Palaiologos, who died with a sword in his hand for his people.

@@joannes4321 Do remember that Orban's massive bombards, while capable of dealing tremendous damage to Constantinople's western wall, is so difficult to reload and tend to overheat. This means that the cannons can only be fired a few times every day, thus giving the defenders enough time to make a hasty patch job on the walls. They also managed to block the Golden Horn with a chain, preventing the Ottoman fleet from flanking them. Both of these factors, combined with Emperor Constantine XI Palaiologos' charisma and ability to uplift the morale of Constantinople's populace and defenders, and the willingness of everyone in the city to defend it (soldiers, peasants, Genoan mercenaries, and members of the Christian Church, Catholic and Orthodox alike), turns a swift fall into a long, drawn out siege. Only when Mehmet II orders his fleet to move the ships overland into the Golden Horn, circumventing the chain and allowing the fleet to break Constantinople's thinner northern wall, that the tide of battle turns to the Ottomans' favor. This also caused confusion, as some defenders of the western wall hastily moved to defend the northern wall against Ottoman bombardments. When the Ottomans begin their final assault on the wall, the Genoan commander got mortally wounded, thus routing his men. The Ottomans then managed to take control on the outer and inner walls of the west side, and even managed to capture the Kerkoporta, one of Constantinople's gates. Emperor Constantine then lead a final assault to take the gate back from the Ottomans, and died in battle

@@farizkeren5730 Ottomans would have won either way, 80,000+ ottoman soldiers against 11,000 roman soldiers couldn’t be won. The Theodosian walls were crumbling before the siege even began from crusaders and bulgars. Nothing about the battle from the ottoman perspective is strategically impressive. Big ass bombard go boom. The ships crossing land into the golden horn isn’t a new thing, the romans did the exact same thing in the siege of nicaea.

Fatih Sultan Mehmet, during the conquest of Istanbul, transported about 70 ships over land in one night to bypass a chain blocking the Golden Horn. This event occurred in 1453, and the Ottoman fleet's ships were moved from the land between Galata and Sarayburnu into the Golden Horn. This strategic move played a significant role in the conquest of the city.

@Huso Ucar It is smaller, but still massive for a cannon, and definitely works well as an anti-ship weapon. It is also faster to reload, and less likely to blow up from overheating Dardanelles Gun: 17 ft, 16.8 tons Orban's Gun: 27 ft, around 354 tons (1 ox can pull around 5.9 tons of weight, and it took 60 oxen to pull the gun all the way to Constantinople) (the cannon has to be sturdy enough to not be destroyed every time it fires) And of course it's not an exact replica, the techniques used to built the Dardanelles Gun is more advanced than the ones used by Orban
