Fall of Baghdad (Mongol Invasion)

The Mongol conquest of the Abbasid Caliphate culminated in the horrific sack of Baghdad that effectively ended the Abbasid Golden Age.
For many historians, the arrival of the Mongols into the heart of Muslim faith and empire is the single most devastating moment in the history of the Muslim Middle East. It’s easy to see why-and hard to argue otherwise-because the Sack of Baghdad would mark the end of the Abbasid Golden Age.
Rather than submit, the Abbasid caliph challenged the Mongols to try and storm his city, if they dared. The nomadic army from Asia-led by Hulagu Khan, one of Genghis Khan’s grandsons-did indeed dare. Doing what they are most famous for, the Mongols thrashed Baghdad. In 10 days of unremitting violence and destruction, Baghdad and its inhabitants were completely, and utterly vanquished. Almost without exception, the population was either put to the sword or sold into slavery. The River Tigris ran red-to cite one of the most over-quoted, and overwrought phrases in history-with the blood of slaughtered men, women and children.

The video forgot the most important part. The main Mongol forces under China split into Yuan Empire and stopped supporting the Mongols in the West.That is what completely crippled the Mongols in the West.
@FreedomForever2010
@FreedomForever2010 2 жыл бұрын
@@makemap The split was caused by the Mongols lacking clear succession laws. You can see the same trend of flash in the pan empires in other empires that lacked clear succession. In the second generation everyone remembers who the founder named his heir, but by the third generation there are a multitude of claimants and things go to hell as everyone carves out their own empire. It wasn't the split that crippled the Mongols, it was the lack of clear succession that caused the split, which then crippled the empire as the successors fought for arch-supremacy.

@@FreedomForever2010 Most of mongols main tacticians and military equipment were from China during Ghenghis Khans rein. That is why they were successful. The Chinese left and went back to China to deal with Yuan dynasty. This left Western Mongols out of gunpowder weapons from the early age of invasion and high manpower that the Chinese fighting with the Mongols to successfully hold the West. When the Chinese left the Chinese allies in the mongol army also started breaking away. Thus the civil war began. It was actually the Chinese that helped the Mongol to move that far. The Franks(French) even knew and tried to ally the Mongols. Franco-Mongol Alliance. But it was kind of late and they couldn't get the support they wanted from Mongols. That is why during Napoleons rein, he has a quote: "Let China sleep, for when she wakes up, she will move the world." Exactly what is happening today that US is messing with China. China is moving the world technologically and trade so far, but not militarily yet.

Hulagu originally planned to attack Cairo via Palestine and attack the Mamluk dynasty. But at this moment, a sudden event changed the fate of the Arab world. Hulagu learned that his older brother Mengge Khan had died in the battle against Diaoyu City in the Southern Song Dynasty(Southern China) at the end of 1259. The brothers were caught in the struggle for the position of Khan and decided to lead the main force back to east, leaving only Buhua (Hulagu's subordinates) led less than 10000 cavalry units remained in Syria. On September 3, 1260, the Mongolian army of Buhua and the Egyptian Mamluk army fought at Ainzarut. The battle ended in a complete victory for the Egyptian army, which also announced the end of Mongolian Empire to the west. So the battle of Diaoyu City rescued Muslim civilization.

@Heus Had sorry you are not quite right, only Hulagu's wife was, and probably she had no choice in marring him. The Christians are humans not savages in addition the ME (Iraq and the Levant) at that time 30% Christians, 20% Jewish, that was in Iraq. As for Syria 60% were Christians. In Mosul alone 50% were Christians 30% Jewish.
@manalhangawe742
@manalhangawe742 Жыл бұрын
@Heus HadThe Christians were between two enemies one, the Mongol, demanded money - the other, the Muslims, wanted to remove them from their country, their land, despite the fact that they, the Christians, liked to live among the Muslims. Also our ancestors, our for fathers, at least in Mosul, were persecuted, oppressed, in 246 AC at the hands of the Persians- because the Mousselines were Christians and Jewish- then at the hands of the Abassed Abo Ja'afar Almansour who killed the dignitaries of Mosul and thousands of its people, and his army raped some women, as they were pretty, and for what? for complaining that the tribute, Jiziya, was too high, as the city was so rich for its industry, and because they demanded autonomy. It remained a Jewish city for seven centuries, omitted from history.The city of Mosul originally founded by the children of Israel in 600BC after the Assyrian were annihilated, at the hands of the Medes and Babylonians, then, and by the end of the first century the majority embraced Christianity, monotheists, did not believe in the Trinity, but resorted to the Roman Byzantine Church in 1350s for protection and lost the Essence of their creed- as all the priests were previously killed and remained without clergy for a century. The region was called the Fertile Crescent as it was so rich. The question is who attacked the Levant at the first place? There were continuous wars for centuries between the Saljukes, the Turks, then the Mumlukes- by the way they were not Egyptians- and the Christians. In Mosul people lived all together- Christians, Jewish, and Muslims- after 1120 Ad- in harmony loved each other and they all defended the city as one man. (the majority of the Original people of Iraq, particularly Mosul, Tikriet, A'ana Rawa at the Ephraties banks and in Syria were originally the Children Of Israel). prior the advent of Islam, Iraq was Christian in the city of Al-Hearah and Jewish to the north, around what was known as Baghdad, they lived from Baghdad to the city of Babel. (Also it is worth mentioning that the Chritians and Jews were the Arab of Iraq and Syria and spoke Arabic in its best form, an example; the clan of Taghlub in Syria and their per- Islam era poet Omar bin Kulthoum. Also Imroa'-Elkyes lived in Syria).

If genghis had followed what his previous tribesmen did, he wouldn't have been able to create this system which ruled central and East Asia . He was different. He changed tactics, army formation, removed reservation, always carried skilled engineers, experts back home. Didn't kill them. Broke rules of warfare by showing retreat as the best form of attack. Providing escape route for enemies in the battle to give them hope and later kill is another

I've read it. A pretty awesome historical fiction (emphasis on FICTION) series overall but completely horrible when it comes to historical accuracy. First book was somewhat semi-historical, but the rest were utterly ahistorical and anachronistic. The Mongols just kept being depicted as a bunch of savage horse warriors akin to game of thrones' dothraki who won most of their battles through brute force alone as opposed to the technologically and culturaly sophisticated militaristic empire that they truly were.
@vinicius21989
@vinicius21989 10 ай бұрын
@@warpaint7486 as I recall, they were not described as a bunch of technologyless savages, but a people who conquered and absorbed technology from China, built a great capital city with huge walls, but still internally disagreed on whether they should maintain their nomadic lifestyle pre-empire or settle in conquered lands. But anyway, the Conn saga is just entertainment really, it shouldn't be taken as anything super historically accurate, like Cornwell's Saxon Chronicles.
@warpaint7486
@warpaint7486 10 ай бұрын
@vinicius21989 My critique mostly revolves around the battles depicted during the series. I just think it's regrettable that Conn Igulden seemed reluctant or unable to consistently portray accurate, historical battle sequences in his book. Especially considering all the first-hand military sources he could've drawn upon from that time period. Funnily enough, I find that Bernard Cornwell (kudos for mentioning him, btw. You have great taste in books lol) excels in that regard compared to Conn Igulden and should be seen as a benchmark of what can be achieved when you write historically accurate battles. That is to say, one can inject a greater degree of immersion into the story while still efficiently conveying the themes that are already present.But then again, it's all moot - as you've said, these books are all entertainment and not something you'd look at to find historicity. Just felt like I had to point all that out because that was my biggest gripe with the Conqueror series.
@vinicius21989

@@warpaint7486 i got it. As for the way the Mongols fought, I am not able to say whether it was well described in the books. As for Bernard Cornwell's books, a Shield wall seems simpler to describe, and added to his (Cornwell's) great skill and sensitivity in writing, it resulted in memorable scenes.

By the way,According to Tibetan Vikshu and historian Gyananshree Kulachrya's records, a group of Vikshu went to Mirzapur to request Bakhtiar Khilji to invade Magadha(Journal of the Varendra Research Society, Rajshahi,1940). Arab sources mention that the Mongols used books as bridges to cross the Tigris River, and from the intensity of the ink the river’s color changed. Human backwardness for a long time, until it entered the Middle Ages, dark ages, plagues, famines, and intellectual backwardness, until the French Revolution and the Industrial Revolution came and gradually changed Europe, and then Europe gradually changed the world.

The Mongols won many battles not because they had the best cavalry and archers, but in fact they used a lot of gun powder and fire arms. After the Mongols defeated the Chinese Song Empire, they recruited many Chinese generals and also captured a lot of fire arms, and the Chinese at that period was the most advanced people in the world, the Mongols brought along many Chinese fire arms and experts during their conquests of the West and Japan. When the Mongols landed on Japan, the Japan samurai charging in their horse were all blew up by the gun powder pots the Mongols threw at them, and fortunately, the typoons save Japan from Mongol invasions.
