Thank you for your video. Will I be able to manually enter my tax info since i did an amendment & hasn't been fully processed. And if i do manually enter info, will it affect the fafsa application? Thank you again
@utahcollegeaccess
@utahcollegeaccess 5 ай бұрын
Hi, thanks for the question. Yes, you will be able to manually enter your tax information. If you are reapplying for aid using the FAFSA (i.e., this is not your first year filling out the FAFSA), your tax information will be automatically moved from the IRS. If the IRS has already amended your return, the information should be accurate. If they have not processed your amendment as of the time you fill out the FAFSA, you will need to make the changes manually. In any event, once your amendment is processed, the FAFSA will still import your tax information from the IRS. In other words, once the amendment is processed, the FAFSA will update and override any manual resonses. Hope this helps and best of luck!

Where do you manually do the tax questions? Will there be an email sent after the form is done for filling in tax information? A lot of the questions on the parents side of the form are skipped for some reason as well, as they are divorced. Also, in the settings tab for the fafsa profile, should I consent to the "Income-Driven Repayment (IDR)" in the "Financial Information Access" tab in the settings?
@utahcollegeaccess
@utahcollegeaccess 5 ай бұрын
Hi, thanks for the great questions! You are right in noticing that the new FAFSA form "skips" tax information. For returning applicants, this may be confusing as in years prior, much of the tax information was input manually. For the new form, this is actually a feature, not a bug! In the 2024-2025 FAFSA form, all applicants' tax information is automatically imported from the IRS into the form- this is why it seems as if something is being "skipped." As for your the question regarding your parents' tax information, they will each submit their own FAFSA form. Regarding the IDR, this is not a question we can answer for you in a "yes" or "no" manner. IDR plans usually lower your federal student loan payments. However, whenever you make lower payments or extend your repayment period, you will likely pay more in interest over time-sometimes significantly more. In addition, under current Internal Revenue Service (IRS) rules, you might be required to pay income tax on any amount that’s forgiven if you still have a remaining balance at the end of your repayment period. Whether you elect to consent to the IDR or not is highly personal and depends on your financial situation. You can find out more here: studentaid.gov/idr/ Hope this helped and best of luck!

@utahcollegeaccess
@utahcollegeaccess 5 ай бұрын
Hi, thanks for the question. As long as you have a Social Security Number, you should be able to successfully apply for aid. In your situation, the process is a bit more complicated than what is outlined in this video, as it depends on: 1.) If you can contact the parent who is not incarcerated, and 2.) If they are willing to fill out the FAFSA, and 3.) Your age/dependency status. -If you are over the age of 24 as of January 2024, you are considered independent. -If you are under 24, you can still invite your parent to fill out the FAFSA. -If you are married and under 24, you are considered independent. -If your parent is unwilling to fill out the application, you will have the option of receiving an unsubsidized loan. -The first section in the application is titled, "Personal Circumstances." On the fifth page of the application, the FAFSA outlines an array of situations (including parent incarceration) that may apply to you. You will have to read this page carefully to see if any of these situations apply to your personal circumstance. If one (or more) applies to you, click the "Yes" bubble. After this step, you will be able to complete and submit the FAFSA. You will be given a "Provisional SAI (Student Aid Index) Number," after which you will need to verify your circumstance with documentation- the colleges you list on your FAFSA will reach out to you for verification. Our suggestion is that you reach out to your desired colleges/universities for their particular requirements for verification so that you can prepare for verification ahead of time. Hope this helps and best of luck!

Hello, I have a FASFA account for myself (for when I was attending college) and now my son is applying. When I got the email acknowledging my student has invited me to "help complete his form" I have a "get started" blue tab and your example has "log in" when I hit the "get started" tab, it takes me to My activity/Dashboard information and NOT linking me to my son's account. any suggestions to get me to my son's account to complete the parent portion of his FASFAS?
@utahcollegeaccess
@utahcollegeaccess 3 ай бұрын
It would be because the invitation your son sent to you from his FAFSA had something incorrect on it. This could be as small as an extra space at the end of your first or last name. I would sit down with your student and both login on separate devices, have him edit his contributor, and make sure everything is exactly the same as you can see on your profile for your account.

If you haven't signed and submitted you can edit your current FAFSA on the review page, or delete the FAFSA and start over. It would be because the invitation the student sent to the parent from their FAFSA had something incorrect on it. This could be as small as an extra space at the end of the parent's first or last name. I would sit down together and both login on separate devices, have the parent open their profile to see the name, date of birth, and Social Security Number (SSN) listed so you can see the exact items listed. Then have the student edit their contributor, and make sure everything is exactly the same as can be seen on the parent's profile and send the invite again. I would delete every item (first and last name, date of birth, and SSN) and reenter that information. Now if the parent does not have an SSN, currently there is no fix for this issue and we are waiting for the March update to possibly fix this issue. That update should happen within the next two weeks.

Hi, thanks for reaching out with your question. One possible reason as to why you have hit an obstacle could be that the website and application process are both undergoing major changes this year. Currently, they are in the "soft launch" phase of the updates. We have seen both the website and FAFSA application go down periodically, so we suggest checking back frequently to try again. The good thing is that once the kinks in the updated application and website are worked out, the actual FAFSA itself should be a lot more streamlined and easy to navigate. Thanks so much for your patience with these changes and best of luck in your higher education journey!

We've seen this issue mainly with parents that don't have a Social Security number. If your parent doesn't have one here is the latest information: There still isn't a solution to this problem. According to Federal Student Aid: "There is currently no workaround for a parent without an SSN. A student may start the application, but the parent will not be able to contribute the parent information. The student and parent will be able to complete the 2024-25 FAFSA form online once the issue is resolved." Our recommendation is to get as far as you can and document the places you are stuck with screenshots (without personal information) and make sure there is a timestamp somewhere with the screenshot. Maybe email it to yourself so you have proof. Then talk to your college about next steps. However, if your parent does have an SSN then I would try a different browser, computer, etc.

Here are some options: Try having the student insert both parents on their section instead of the parent inserting the spouses information. Try deleting the parent's FAFSA section and start over. Another option is to have the spouse create an FSA ID and use that exact information on the FAFSA. You could also try a different browser, computer or device, or clear cache and cookies (search how to do that on google). Lastly, you can wait until the FAFSA Submission Summary is available mid-March. Let us know if any of these items worked.

@utahcollegeaccess
@utahcollegeaccess 5 ай бұрын
Hi, thanks for the great question. You still fill out the 2024-2025 FAFSA. The year structure can be a little confusing, so hopefully his brings a bit of clarity: The period "2024-2025" indicates the academic year Fall 2024 - Summer 2025 (in other words, Fall '24, Spring '25, and Summer '25). The 2025-2026 period and any other year will follow the same format (Fall '25, Spring '26, and Summer '26). Since you will be attending at the start of Spring 2025 semester, this year's FAFSA (2024-2025) will need to be filed in order to apply for aid. Once you file the 2024-2025 FAFSA, our suggestion is that you reach out to your institution's financial aid office to inform them of your start date. The reason is that some of the university/college specific grants or scholarships they offer often begin during the Fall semester. A Spring start date may not necessarily mean that you are ineligible for university/college specific aid you might qualify for, so it's always a good idea to check in with them about additional grants and scholarships. Hope that helped and best of luck!

If the parent created their account (FSA ID) and it was processed, the FAFSA will actually skip all the tax questions because they have transferred your tax data from the IRS. That's what the consent form is for, if you clicked "approve" you gave them permission to pull that over. Just fill out what is asked of you on the FAFSA and you should be good to go!

@utahcollegeaccess

Hi, thanks for the question. It wouldn't necessarily be on a specific document. Date of official residency can vary by way of determination from state to state. Generally, it is 1 year, but it's always best to check with your institution of choice. For example, the University of Texas, Austin website writes, "In general, students are considered Texas residents if they graduated from a Texas high school and lived in Texas for at least 36 months before graduating from that school and 12 months before enrolling in a university; or if they established permanent residency at least 12 months before enrolling in a university. What do I put for parent resendency if they are not legal residents of California?
@utahcollegeaccess
@utahcollegeaccess 4 ай бұрын
Great question, the state question has a "Foreign Country" option you can select. Or select the state the parents have legal residency. According to the University of California: "To meet these requirements, you must be continuously physically present in California for more than one year (366 days) immediately prior to the residence determination date (generally the first day of classes) and intend to make California your home permanently." Then your parents have legal residency. Hope one of these suggestions work!

Thanks for reaching out. Unfortunately, some A numbers have not been saving- for example, one known issue in this regard is if the A number ends with a '0'. This is something that the FSA is still working on to remedy. You're right that there has been difficulty in getting help from the FSA, as their phone lines and emails are swamped. One suggestion is to reach out to the FSA through their chat service; you should see a little green owl located on the bottom right hand corner of the screen on studentaid.gov. Beyond the chat service, the next best suggestion is to take screenshots and reach out to your university's financial aid office on next steps.

Hi, thanks for the question. Sorry your parents didn't receive the link, this may be a kink with the new form and website that is being sorted out. In this case, we recommend that you log in and double check the emails. you may even try removing and retyping them in. Thankfully, you don't have to wait to receive the link. They can simply create FSA ID (or just log in if they already have one) on studentaid.gov. Once they create an account/log in, the system should link them to your application. The best thing to get access to your account is to call Federal Student Aid at 1-800-433-3243. The only problem is that they are backed up bad. I've had some success getting ahold of someone early in the morning right when they open at 8 AM EST. As a side note: We've seen this issue mainly with parents that don't have a Social Security number.

Hi and thanks for your question. It sounds like you are running into a technical error on the form. Unfortunately, we have seen some errors like this pop up and it is due to the new updates and changes to the FAFSA. It is true that the new form has a lot of updates that make it more convenient, but there are a few kinks in the system that are still needing to be ironed out. Our suggestion in this case is that you wait and check back periodically for the correction on the FAFSA form itself. Hope this helped and good luck!
@utahcollegeaccess
@utahcollegeaccess 4 ай бұрын
Something we've found that works, is to delete your FAFSA and insert both parents when you invite your parents to the form. Only one will need to login and sign but then your father won't get stuck in his portion due to the glitch. If you, the student, have already submitted your portion you could try to edit your contributors when you login and go to your FAFSA under "My Activity". However, we haven't confirmed if this method works yet. If that doesn't work, you'll need to wait until you can make a correction. That feature won't be available until mid-March.

Does it take some time for the parents to get there account verified
@utahcollegeaccess
@utahcollegeaccess Ай бұрын
It depends on the situation. If they have Social Security Numbers it should only take 1-3 business days. Here’s the order I’ve seen for parent’s without SSNs: 1. They create their studentaid.gov account, at the end it has them answer the knowledge based questions. They answer them correctly and confirm their identity and are good to go! 2. The parents incorrectly answer one of the knowledge based questions or there is an error and the knowledge based questions do not appear. The parent should receive an email from FSA with a case number and the attestation form. They need to fill out that form, attached the required documents (on page 3 of the attestation form), and email back FSA with that information. 3. If the documents the parents provided are not approved or are “rejected” by FSA, they will need to resubmit the needed documents. 4. If the parents don’t have the required documents, or if the documents they provide are not valid, then the student will not qualify for Title IV aid (aid from the FAFSA) because FSA cannot verify the identity of the parent.

@utahcollegeaccess 3 ай бұрын
@@izzyb.6050 No the consent form would not cause you to be independent. Right now you can't make any corrections until your FAFSA is processed, which should happen in the next two weeks. You should receive an email indicating your FAFSA has been processed and at that point you should go in to make a correction. When you make your correction, review the questions at timestamp 15:37 again and double check them all. I'll go through each question in this comment again so you can review these to make sure you answered them correctly. First is the student marital status, make sure you put single. If you are married it would cause you to be independent. Second, school college and career plans make sure you clicked "Other Undergraduate (Junior and beyond)" and then "No" to if you already have a Bachelor's degree. Third, under "Student Personal Circumstances" select "none of these apply" any other selection would make you independent. Fourth, indicate you are not homeless or answer "No" on that question (unless applicable). Fifth, for the "Student Unusual Circumstance" select "No". Double check that your birthday doesn't put you as 24 years old and if it asks, make sure you select that you don't have any dependents. If the situation still persists, I would recommend talking with your college to see if they can help.

Same here,two weeks trying . My mom doesn’t have a SSN, but we can go until last step 7, are three questions to verify her identity. After responding and pressing submit, it appears above the page saying an unknown error has accurred. Close all browser windows and start over.

can you do something about Independency?
@utahcollegeaccess
@utahcollegeaccess 5 ай бұрын
Hi, thanks for the question. Are you asking whether you can somehow change your dependency status in the application? If so: unfortunately not, as the criteria for being independent or dependent is specific and changes from student to student. If you feel there has been an error in determining your dependency status, you can always go back and edit your application. Of course, you will need to resubmit the application and wait for it to go through again. Best of luck, hope that helped!

Enjoyed the video, but I have a question. My parents and I completed the FAFSA, leaving both the student and parent sections unsigned until we were ready to submit the form. When I later signed the student section, the FAFSA automatically submitted without the parent signature. I'm curious about why this happened, and the system now indicates I have to wait for processing before attempting to address it. Is there a solution to this issue?

Hi, thanks for the question. You are right that dependent students now submit their application separately- this is a feature of the new FAFSA form, not a bug! This may be a bit confusing for returning applicants, as in years prior the parents' information was submitted together with the student's in one form. In other words, the student and each contributor (most often, the parent(s)) will submit their own, separate FAFSA form. Once the student submits their form, a screen that says, "You are almost there!" will appear. The messaging here also mentions that your parent(s) will still need to file their FAFSA form. Your parent(s) will still need to submit theirs by logging into the form using their own FSA ID. From there, they can complete their FAFSA form. Hope this helps and best of luck!

@@utahcollegeaccess While we did receive the "You are almost there!" message after signing the student section for the FAFSA application, however when logging into the parent's account it also indicates that the application has already been submitted. So, we find ourselves currently unable to complete the signature section of the parent section, as the system states that the form is pending processing until late January. Are there any suggested solutions to address this matter?

Okay, thanks for clarifying. In this case, we suggest reaching out to FSA at 800-433-3243. They will likely have more answers regarding this issue, as this may be an error with the form itself, or perhaps the website. Best of luck, hope this helped!@@dylanho6948

Great question, this issue usually happens if your invite to your parent didn't have the EXACT same information (first and last name, date of birth, social security number) that your parent has on their account. Even an extra SPACE at the end of a name can cause this issue. I would go in and delete everything off the parent invite and reinsert it EXACTLY as seen on your parent's FSA ID/student aid account. If your parent doesn't have a Social Security number, this could also be the cause. If this is the case, try in a couple of weeks. Federal Student Aid said that they have an update coming to fix a lot of these issues.
@utahcollegeaccess
@utahcollegeaccess 3 ай бұрын

Hi. I am a parent. my husband and I are married and filled taxes jointly in 2022 But I moved to US from europe to accompany my son .My husband still lives in europe. we all are US citizens. My question is ,do we fill out the fafsa as seperated or married.?İf we file married does my husband need a FSA ID eventhought I am the solo financial contributor for my son because My husband has parkinsons and can not work. thank you very much.

Great question, if you filed your taxes jointly with your husband then the FAFSA should automatically pull over your taxes and you won't have to worry about those questions. Now both you and your spouse are required to provide your information (name, DOB, SSN) on the FAFSA but only ONE of you is required to create an FSA ID, provide consent, and sign the FAFSA.

TiA for your video. My child will be enrolled in fall 2024 as a duo major as fifth year in university . She'll be graduating in 2026. Is there an option to choose as a duo major so she'll get financial aid and not a master's or phd. Thanks

Thanks for the great question. There is a cap to the amount of aid, including loans, that a student is eligible for toward their first bachelor's degree. In the case of the Pell grant, there is only a certain amount of aid that your student can receive, known as "Lifetime Eligibility Used" that will be specific to your student and their circumstance. For example, a student may be eligible to receive up to 12 semesters of aid by way of the Pell Grant (upon eligibility). If your student is running out of federal aid due to the lengthened period of study/heavier course load, our suggestion is to reach out to your student's institution for additional financial aid. Not only will they be able to give you specific answers tailored to your situation, but they may be able to give you access to institution-specific resources (such as grants and scholarships). Best of luck, hope this helped!

Great question! You can answer the question of if you have an "Unusual Circumstance" at 17:40. That will make you independent and you won't need parental information, but you will have to confirm that with your college.

If i do not provide consent but enter in information manually (im a paranoid victim of a big id theft attempt scheme), i know i don't qualify for FED studey aid because it doesnt have an SAI. But what about the college, who has a separate system but need the fafsa submittted. Wont they still give need based aid since i entred inthr info manually anyways.? Remember im talkign about the private school financial aid...nothing to do with federal or state aid.

According to Federal Student Aid, if you do not provide consent, you will be unable to qualify for any aid, including student loans. Our recommendation is to contact your private school with this question. They will be able to better assist and answer this question.

I have one question. If both of my parents are still married, but they don't live together do I have to put both parents tax return? I mean my father doesn't live in America, in fact he has never been in America. It's only me and mom. We haven't seen him for over 18 years and we can't reach him through the phone either. Last time we were in contact he was residing in Colombia.

This is a great question, thank you for reaching out. I would treat your FAFSA as if your parents are "separated". Fill out your portion in a way that your parents are not married, and in you mother's portion have her select "Separated" when it asks about her marital status.

I would double check the Social Security Number, have the card out to make sure it is exactly as listed on the card. You could also try creating the account on a different device, a different browser, or different internet. If the problem persists, I would call FSA at 1-800-433-3243. However, it may take you a couple of tries to get ahold of them. They are overworked and not answering.
