Thank you so much. Great video and valuable information. My question is when you fill out the FAFSA form, for the part for your assets in checking and savings if you have some money sitting there that you borrowed from a bank like a loan should that be excluded from the total amount to be reported? Thanks
@TheScholarshipSystem Жыл бұрын
It should not be excluded. It is part of your asset category. It might be best to wait and submit the FAFSA until after that money is spent, if possible. The balance should be as of the date of FAFSA submission.

We own one home that we rent out, and our primary residence we do not own, and we pay rent (California real estate). How would this be treated on the FAFSA, and is there any way to treat the one home we own as our primary residence or to not count it as an asset on the FAFSA? Thanks!
@TheScholarshipSystem2 жыл бұрын
Your rental home would be considered an investment property. Unfortunately, FAFSA doesn't take into account living expenses. You may wish to request a special consideration and explain your living arrangements to your student's financial aid office. Depending on the school, they may take your situation into account. But that cannot be done via FAFSA. The school would need to be contacted directly.

I'm in! Is the CSS profile the same as FAFSA? We have a college on our list that requires it.

Very similar but there are small differences. The CSS profile is a bit more intrusive. We will have to make a video on that one too soon!

North Carolina requires seniors to do FAFSA.

It's not a state requirement that all NC seniors complete the FAFSA - but we recommend that all students do fill it out if they are going to college, regardless of if they expect to receive aid or not!

Should we submit a new FAFSA now that our daughter is independent on our taxes? Any help is appreciated. Thank you!
@TheScholarshipSystem Жыл бұрын
You have to submit a FAFSA for every academic year your student is attending college. If you've already submitted one and are looking to change the information on it - I suggest contacting the financial aid office at the school before making any big changes. That being said, even though a child is considered independent due to your tax filing, that doesn't mean that they are considered independent based on FAFSA. We recommend checking out this PDF - studentaid.gov/sites/default/files/fafsa-dependency.pdf

Hardest wuestion on fafsa is always regarding my daughter’s “parents” and my marital status. Are they referring to me and her father (my ex-husband) or me and my current husband? Are they referring to my current status? So confusing bc one of the question specifically mentions her birth certificate😵💫🤦♀️
@TheScholarshipSystem Жыл бұрын
Per the FAFSA website: If you have a stepparent who is married to the legal parent whose information you’re reporting, you must provide information about that stepparent, not the other biological parent. However, : The FAFSA form asks about your parents’ education level. For these two questions, your parents are considered to be your birth -your stepparent is not your parent in those questions.

What if my son lives in the house with parents, but he is the one who is paying for college by working, doesn't that count for him to receive pell grant?
@TheScholarshipSystem2 жыл бұрын
Sadly they still count as a dependent as far as FAFSA goes - until they're 24 years old, join the military, are married or emancipated. I know it's not fair when a child supports themselves but that's unfortunately how they do it! :(

@TheScholarshipSystem2 жыл бұрын
Yes! FAFSA is an annual application. The current application is for the following academic year 2023-2024. Even if you don't qualify for need based aid, it may qualify you for federal student loans, which have lower interest rates and better benefits than private student loans.

If all you get is a loan from FAFSA, do you have to take it? How do you decline it?
@TheScholarshipSystem2 жыл бұрын
When schools offer a financial aid package, families can either accept or deny individual offers. In the school's portal, students will indicate which financial aid items they will be accepting or rejecting. At that point, you can decline any loans being offered.

Not at all. Some schools are awarded limited funding (usually this is in terms of additional state grants, not always Federal grants) based on their enrollment the previous year. Once those funds are awarded, they may not have any additional funding come available.
