Despite his wise words, the scene suggests that Edward VIII was probably secretly angry that he himself was never crowned. Note that melancholy look at the old-fashioned television and those quietly wistful words from Alex Jannings, “the chance to be a god.” And immediately afterwards he has himself back in hand and explains to his guests that his love for his wife is of course worth much more - masterfully played! The Fox and the Sour Grapes...

Elizabeth was not ordinary. She was intelligent and perceptive. And she had great ability. She was a great queen.
@calistafalcontail
@calistafalcontail 3 ай бұрын
She wanted to be ordinary actually. That wouldnt have been an insult to her, cause she wanted a "normal" royal life as wife and mother mainly. She had no desire to become Queen so young or at all. Other people around her, like her sister and Uncle, were more into grand things and might have had the style and charme...but God knows she was able to handle this task better than the others would have I think.

Despite the presentation of Edward and Wallis' marriage being a romantic love match, they were very unhappy together and both were unfaithful to each other. Wallis was well satisfied to be the mistress of the Prince of Wales and later the King, and her then husband was ok with the arrangement, too, but Edward became obsessed and pushed for marriage. I've heard that he went so far as to use the manipulation of threatening to off himself.

Yup, and he felt a sense of not belonging and having no purpose. Their parties and lazy life got boring fast. Thats why he wanted a role from Elizabeth to serve again...but he messed up to bad before. I dont know if its true that Wallis even had an affair with a Nazi official but...not hard to believe. Edward was a damaged man.

Anyone who think being a monarch is the chance to be a god should under no circumstances ever become one. Elizabeth's view was that the monarch was an lifetime obligation to serve her country. That's the attitude you need to do that job well. All the British and English monarchs who thought that the crown made them a deity either prompted the creation of whole new branches of government or got shortened due to their miserable, self-absorbed performance. Edward VIII would have been another King John, Edward II, Richard II, or George IV. (Not Charles II only because the UK was above shortening its poorly performing monarchs by that point.)

Quite so, the Monarchy has rarely if ever been absolutist in any fashion, and has always operated on unspoken bonds of consent from both the people, and the nobility. Edward VIII would have doubtlessly used the crown to compliment his own vanity. We dodged a bullet when he abdicated.

Right, wether people agree with what Mary of Teck said or not..."monarchy is a CALLING from God"...a calling to serve and guide the people in the best way possibile. If ego gets in the way, you mess up. Every monarch who abused their power, damaged the people and himself/herself.

Wallis was right when she secretly called her husband "Peter Pan". In all his letters he talks like a petulant child, so focused on all the unfairness and injustice being done to him that he never had one good thing to say about any of his family members, even when they were clearly his superiors.

He wanted to sell the UK out to Hitler in order to get back to the throne later though. He wanted the status, but not the work and moral obligations of being king. He was more or less forced to abdicate, cause he conspired with the Nazis. The public wasnt allowed to know this back then. Would have been a massive scandal. So the story of him abdicating for Wallis looked better for everyone. He had a toxic addiction to her, but she didnt really love him and wrote so in her letters to her ex husband. He would have run things into the ground. He was shallow, arrogant, hedonistic, damaged. As king, he could have changed whatever he wanted..he would have had the last word on everything so why not stay....ah yes because the palace was about to blast him for his Nazi connections and the public would have lost their minds.

I pretty much drew from the series that Phillip was a boorish, pompous ass who struggled to live a life of subordination.
@jasonkoch3182
@jasonkoch3182 5 ай бұрын
Then you drew the wrong conclusion. First of all, this is a fictional television drama. And you can't have drama without conflict. Philip, especially in the first two seasons, was the antagonist. Conflict between Philip and Elizabeth is what developed the drama. Charles took on the antagonist roles in seasons 3-6. But every scene is scripted. If you take anything away from this show other than it being a phenomenal television show, you have completely forgotten it's not a documentary. Real records show that Philip was right there to serve his royal role from the beginning. He did try to modernize the monarchy, he was initially treated poorly by the court, largely because of Queen Mary and Winston Churchill. He surely chafed at having his career ended far sooner than he expected, and he may have expressed his unhappiness about certain things in private, but there is no record of him ever failing to perform his role.
