I just want to thank you. I finally understand temperature, I like to know why numbers are there, don't tell me to just multiply it by 5/9!!! Thank you once again, your videos are amazing.

Explain why you can convert f° to c° by adding 40, divide by 1.8, and subtract the 40 you added earlier. Thanks.
@BensChemVideos
@BensChemVideos 3 жыл бұрын
You can convert to celsius from Fahrenheit by subtracting 32 from the Fahrenheit temperature, then multiplying that result by 5/9.
@FreethinkingSecularist
@FreethinkingSecularist 3 жыл бұрын
@@BensChemVideos Yes, I know. You gave a very good description of why that conversion works; I am asking for the same explanation as to why my method works. I want to grok it as I have the one you gave.
@BensChemVideos
@BensChemVideos 3 жыл бұрын
Hmmm... good question! I tried a few examples with that formula you brought up, and it worked every time. I'll give it some more thought and get back to you.
@BensChemVideos
@BensChemVideos 3 жыл бұрын
@@FreethinkingSecularist okay, I figured it out. Both formulas work because those two mathematical expressions are equivalent. If you distribute and simplify the expressions (x-32)(5/9) and (x+40)/(9/5)-40, you'll end up with (5/9)x + 160/9.
@FreethinkingSecularist
@FreethinkingSecularist 3 жыл бұрын
@@BensChemVideos Thanks a bunch! You know my method may be easier to use because you can convert either way f° - c° or the other way without having to remember to reciprocate the 5/9 fraction or the order of steps for - or + 32. For f-c divide by 1.8 and c-f multiple 1.8! Just add 40 first and subtract it at the end!

Celsius and fahrenheit multiply and divide factor is:- ~1.8 x 1 = 1.8. ~1.8 x 2 = 3.6. ~1.8 x 3 = 5.4. ~1.8 x 4 = 7.2. ~1.8 x 5 = 9. ~1.8 x 6 = 10.8. ~1.8 x 7 = 12.6. ~1.8 x 8 = 14.4. ~1.8 x 9 = 16.2. ~1.8 x 10 = 18.Celsius to fahrenheit is (Celsius x 1.8) + 32.Fahrenheit to celsius is (Fahrenheit - 32) ÷ 1.8.

For F and C, why didn't you just say 5F=9C +160? Would've been much more easier.. OR C=1.8F +32 or F=(C-32) /1.8

I think the Kelvin scale puts temperatures in the correct perspective
@Madmuli
@Madmuli 4 жыл бұрын
I agree, it seems to be the most logical approach. However Celsius is based on the freezing temperature of water, which is a more familiar reference point in common life than the lowest possible temperature, therefor it seems to suit a little better. When used for scientific(-educational) purposes, Kelvin is the standard. Well, at least in most parts of the world :P

Technically, 1 million degrees Celsius and 1 million degrees Kelvin are the same. Also true of Fahrenheit and #Rankine.

Heat isn't just the average kenetic energy of molecules. Heat travels at light speed through space. It's true that space in the solar is shrouded in a cloud of invisibly small particles. It is also true that thise molecules absorb that heat and convert it to velocity, but to assume that molecules are necessary for heat leaves the possibility that space must be absolute zero Kelvin. As you approach the sun, that view becomes increasingly clearly wrong. How can you express heat in terms of material kenetic energy without admitting cold space? Is space hot when heat is passing through it? Isn't it more practice to call space hot were you would burn travelling through that space?

I don't care what the experts say, Fahrenheit is more precise than Celsius or Kelvin. There are 180 degrees between freezing and boiling with Fahrenheit. With Celsius and Kelvin there are only 100degrees. Also Fahrenheit is a linear scale while Celsius is exponential. I am cool with metric distance though(mm, cm, m).

How is Celsius exponential? Also you do realize that 1) you can just use more points after the decimal point? For Gods sake you can use ° mC if you so choose 2) for most applications giving more than one place after the decimal points is useless (simply beginning with the fact that in practice temperature is an inherently unstable quantity) 3) 100 is a power of 10
