Failing a coding interview is a humbling experience as it shows us how much we still have to learn and it's just a change to keep improving. You still got a valuable learning experience from the interview that will make you better in the next one.

Bombing my coding interview 3 hours ago for a big tech internship brought me to your video. Thank you for sharing your reflections, it really hits home. I had emotional moments here and there. As many people dont like being watched by a group, when peeing,, eating or sleeping, its odd to be watched when working. A much better alternative is to get a assignment and solve. And have follow up discussions on THAT assigment.

Many of us, especially those self-taught, have experienced rejection and feeling like we don't belong, like we are failures. The truth is anything but. Here's one of my favorite quotes from Marcus Aurelius: "The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way." So look at the obstacles, the hardships, the tough learning experiences as what will shape you, drive you, to become the person you ultimately will become. No one will stop you. Keep pushing, never give up. You got this.

dude as a software engineer when you do interviews you shouldn't worry about the outcome but just take it as learning as every interview you take increases your chances slightly every time. I did the same as you before but now I learnt not to focus on the outcome even if i think the job spec is perfect for me. I got an interview tomorrow as I have been laid off but I don't want to get my hopes up too high or I will be disappointed. A lot of devs have to apply for like 50 to 100 jobs and have many interviews like 20 to land an offer

Worst interview of my life was when they tossed 10 pieces of paper at me with a complex task written on the top of each and they gave me a pencil to write down all the code I would use to complete those tasks. I looked at each page and could not be bothered to write a single line

I feel like no one talks about their failure. This video alone says so much about how transparent you’re being and what you’re sharing about ur experience. I’ve failed over and over again.. things don’t workout and each time I felt the same, like I let myself down and everyone else. But at the end of the day, sharing this experience is more helpful then having come back and said “hey I passed, all’s good”.. it’s a confidence boost sure, but does that mean you’ve learned how to overcome adversity or to answer hard questions for a test. I think it’s powerful to share and I appreciate you taking the time to share with us ur journey! Failure is the key to learning in my opinion!

Honestly dude don’t let it phase you! I know it’s easy to say but always remember that “failure” is the only way to grow and learn, it shows us our strengths and where we need to improve From June to December , I applied for 35 different software development jobs and got rejected by all of them. I got totally disheartened by it all and was totally worried that I’d never find something. Never give in, the 36th job I applied for I ended up getting. Keep working away and never give in, your time will come I promise. If you can take a rejection without being phased then you’ll be unstoppable

I feel you man! I’ve been there many times in my career... I’m 10 years in the industry and 15 years into coding! Stop setting expectations cause you literally cannot know it all! Often times luck is involved, they could give you a question you have solved many times or they could throw you a curve ball and ask you to answer how to do something with graph algorithms and maybe you have never done anything like that before. Point is, the one thing you should expect as an engineer is not getting the position... cause it happens to the best of us. Maybe you did good but the other person did better, so many variables go into play when interviewing.

This is good advice bro. For me, I walk in an interview not having a high expectation of the result, and so is coding. I will do my best, sure, but I won't lie to myself and think that I will pass with flying colors, I'll just do my best and maybe, just maybe, luck is also on my side on a given day.

Bro, I believe in you. I really do! It takes a strong person to fail and fail and fail and fail, then continue to try. I failed coding and whiteboard interviews also so I know the feeling. Spend less time on all the other things you do and spend more time with code even when you don’t want to. Then once you become an established dev, then you can focus on other things again. Or just spend more time on what is most important to you if it is not being a dev.

Don’t view it as letting us down man! You did the best prep that you could and what happened happened. I definitely feel you though. I took a 4 question practice test yesterday and I couldn’t answer ANY of them in 70 mins. None of the tests were passing. So everything you just said, the doubts that flew in, what I was telling myself after...it’s similar to what I’ve been feeling. But we are cut out for this! I’m going to use this as the kick I need to practice way more coding challenges and just making that a part of my routine now.

A lot of these interviews test such low level concepts that you either never use in your job or studied a long time ago. I bombed an interview yesterday due to some weird low level concepts I've never used or needed to. I have 11 years experience and have built a startup with paying customers and built out several applications and native apps over the years using the latest tech. Does this interview define me? Lol, no. Am I disappointed? Sure, because the money was unreal. If they're going to assess me on some bogus exercises that nobody would ever use over all the apps I've built, architected, scaled etc then they're clearly looking for a yes-man code monkey and not a proper engineer. Nobody does their day job in 30 mins with somebody watching you while under pressure. Stay strong dude, it'll come.

I was given a take home technical tests with only 2 questions, and I struggled and totally embarassed myself, and that was an eye-opening and very humbling, I learned from it, moved on and used that to prepare for coming exams, but I will never be ready, but given that, i will still take exams and interviews until I feel like it's time to change career.

Here for the same thing. Nailed my soft skills and questions. Really just biffed the whiteboard. I hate feeling like I’ve failed myself and my family. I studied for a week every day and every night.

Same here...after submitting so many applications, I just completed a coding interview, painful thing is that it's seems to be a great company and the questions were not too hard... I discovered the simple error 1 minute after the time went up. Really sad.

Just don't stop man. You only fail if you give up. Step away for some hours or even a day, come back and evaluate what happened. Every failure is just another data point to improve if you take it the right way. You. Can. Do. This.

This is why take home test are so better. They allow you to approach the problem in your own time without artificial pressure and an observer judging every decision you make. Live coding is a really bad way of determining a developer's skill level. In my 10 years of being a professional university educated software engineer I've never passed a single live coding interview, I have however passed every single take home test. Many companies lose out on talent purely because of their broken recruitment process.

Please don't doubt yourself. You didn't let us down, if anything, you've given us a realistic idea of how difficult getting hired can be for self taught devs. Not too many ppl would be as honest as you have been. That said, I'd say that you've given us all an advantage. Thank you, and keep your head up. You've been working so hard, It will happen.
