FAILED FACES | Wrestling's Worst Good Guys!
If there’s one thing in wrestling that’s worse than a failed heel turn, it’s a failed babyface turn. After all, even if you don’t like how a shifting to the side of the villains played out for your favourite wrestler, you can at least boo the booking. If it’s the same but flipped to the hero’s side though, there’s very little to cheer for. But what are the biggest examples of failed face turns in wrestling history? Well, that’s exactly what we’re going to be looking at today.

WWE seems to remember that Charlotte's dad, Ric Flair, was a 16-ish time world champion, but they forget that he was a heel during most of those title reigns and it would make more sense to book Charlotte similarly rather than trying to push her as the hero. That narrative just doesn't make sense.

They think because Ric is so fondly remembered that people's admiration for him makes the Flair name a face, not realizing that he's remembered and respected because of the fact he was one of the best heels of all time. Even in his final year with WWE, he was more of a face but he got his loudest pops when he'd go back to the heel antics.

Ppl also seem to forget that Charlotte is one of the best NA wrestler they've never witness. They judge her for the booking and forget how many amazing match she offered. She just bury every other women in WWE by every standard but ppl hate on successfull ppl thinking she doesn't deverse to be that incredible. Her heel character did a good job and a lot of ppl are unable to like her bc of what they think she is. I think she's a better heel than face, but it doesn't mean she's a "bad" face. It's kind like MJF in AEW, he's incredible as a Heel but he is also good as a face, not as good as a heel but still better than 95% of other wrestler. Same with Charlotte. I hate the character she's impersonnating, but goddam, she's the best wrestler NA will ever have...

@@terminator_405 Nah bro, he was being pushed at a time when the crowd wanted him to be a heel or atleast a tweaner like how Ambrose was, anyways the crowd turned on him in 2015 with the way the Rumble finished since Kane and Big Show was eliminating all fan favorites and then to have Roman win it at the end just killed the vybe of the match, the universe was soo mad at it that even the Rock got booed, if they had booked it right and had maybe Wyatt, Rusev, Bryan, Ambrose or Cesaro win it would have been good, following night have Lesnar with Heyman cut a promo on the match at the Rumble on Raw, have maybe Kane and Show with J&J security try to take out Lesnar then Rollins try to cash in, Roman comes out and try to help then have Lesnar F5 Roman, then thr next night on Smackdown have Roman do a promo saying that he wants to deal with Lesnar before the winner of the Rumble gets their shot at Mania, have Lesnar show up on the following Raw and they set up a match at Elimination Chamber and have Roman work up to be a fan favorite, I believe that approach would be good to have the crowd behind Reigns.

One badly conceived face-turn was when Jim Cornette and his Midnight Express went full face in 1988, in Crockett/WCW. When the Road Warriors suddenly turned heel, the booker (Dusty Rhodes) needed a new face team, and mistakenly pushed these three natural heels into the good guy role. It didn't work and it didn't last.

You can't talk about failed faces in wrestling without talking about The Rock, or should I say Rocky Maivia, in 1996-97 and Roman Reigns entire face run from 2014-2020. Despite winning championships, wrestling in main events, and selling merchandise, Roman has mostly been received negatively by fans. Also, there's Bob Backlund's WWE return in 1992. Until he became a crazy heel in the summer of 1994, fans weren't really getting behind him probably because they didn't know who he was or weren't familiar with his work in the 70s and 80s.

I’m so disappointed in how they booked and handled Bobby Roode. He’s criminally underrated a class act in the ring has enough charisma to sell a great gimmick or persona. Regardless of his role as a heel or face they dropped the ball with him. Ronda always worked better as as a heel. It plays better to her strengths, Her babyface role felt methodical in how she would talk and act with others. The miz has never quite found the right storyline or rivalry in which he can play a convincing face. His reunion with R-truth might the beginning of a potentially great babyface run. We shall see.

MJF is a recent example of a failed babyface. His reign as aew champion was great because he played the heel role too well. When he turned babyface, he turned into Super-Cena and kept winning matches in ways that did not feel believable. By the end, his reign got boring.

The problem with MJF was partly down to Adam Cole being injured. It was amazing seeing him try to be a baby face and rely on Adam to show him, but once Adam went and he was full baby face it fell a bit flat

I know Ronda was a fan of Piper and he gave his blessing, but that whole "Rowdy" get up, combined with a bratty Joan Jett punk rock theme that doesn’t fit with WWE entrances, along with being touted as the 'Baddest Woman on the Planet" while she's coming to the ring practically kissing babies, made Rousey a tornado of clashing ideas. They needed to treat her as a serious combat sport specialist, and if someone isn’t good on the mic, have her speak as little as possible. If need be, logic has them paired with a manager. I really don't know why they didn't do logical things with Ronda.

I think they were trying to make her the super cena, bianca belair like gimmick. Imo this sort of gimmick doesn't work unless you're appealing only to a childish fanbase like kids or middle east. I've noticed most western fans quickly get tired of the "stronk babyface" gimmick but they connect with more underdog/grounded gimmicks (Cody, Daniel Bryan, LA knight) . Ronda was also devoid of charisma that didn't help either

This is true however his recent collaboration with Riddle forming RKO bro was easily his best babyface turn. What could have been a disaster in theory turned out to be a successful run. Their chemistry was sufficiently effective in making the gimmick work. It had the ideal blend of riddle’s gregarious, oddball attitude and Orton’s more supercilious & austere personality. Orton has played the heel many times in his career and now he fits the babyface role more easily due to legacy and age.

Honestly, Orion’s Face turn could have worked if it had been built up better and if he wasn’t made to look like a complete chump to Triple H in his feud against him. It was just badly executed. Had it been executed better, Orton would arguably have been the face of the Ruthless Aggression era. Also, I'm surprised you didn't mention Roman Reigns and the time Vince tried to push him as a Babyface, only for him to get rejected by the crowd. Hell, even The Rock, one of the most popular stars in the WWE, couldn't get him over as a Face. It wasn't until he turned Heel that he finally started to come around.

Was never a fan of Ronda Rousey to begin with. She came in with no gimmick and was just portraying herself which was bland and boring and once I'd seen one of her matches, I'd seen them all and didn't need to watch another one. The best match on that entire Wrestlemania 34 card was the opening triple threat match for the Intercontinental championship

Rousey was just terrible period. The ONLY time she had a match or promo that wasn't a complete train wreck was the Mania match of her and Kurt vs Steph and Trips. I never remember the crowd ever getting excited for her other than that lone match. Why they gave her so much money and such a major push never made any sense. By the time she joined WWE, she was completely washed up and had "go away heat" in the UFC world.

Raquel Rodriguez should be on there. I love Raquel Gonzalez in NXT, but as “Raquel Rodriguez” on the main roster, her babyface gimmick sucked. She had the look to become a dominant star in the women’s division, but fans, as always, sick and tired of the smiling happy-go-lucky gimmick who smiles all the time and her character is getting stale. She’s the modern day version of Rocky Maivia. If I’m Triple H right now and Raquel returns from injury, turn her heel and my target is sending iLiv Morgan back to the injured list.

Solid and agreeable list but one you really need on this list was Yokozuna turning face. Him having Mr Fuji wave the American flag and speaking fluent English was just so off and the former felt so forced/fake it just wasn’t right. He was an epic monster heel, maybe if they rebranded him or did something else it could have worked but the way they went about, it just was the complete opposite what they had when he was their top heel champion beforehand

So, I was in my pre-teens when Orton, Rhodes, and Dibiase formed Legacy. I wanted to like them so bad, but it was still real to me damn it, so I couldn't like them because they were the bad guys. Then, they went and broke em up, and I really thought Dibiase's turn would finally give me a chance to like him. I was wrong. Turns out, Legacy was the dawning of my love of heel wrestling.

I liked Batista is good as a heel or face, it was just he was brought in during Daniel's run so it was more bad timing. Orton I'd say is better as a heel and a Stone Cold type then a full on face. Del Rio was better as a heel, but I think the main issue was him himself and the bull he pulled that ended his career. Bobby Roode was a great heel, and should of said like that and it didn't help that WWe dropped the ball with him. Charlotte is good as a face and better as a heel, but the biggest issue is WWe gave her way to many title runs. Lacey Evans is a great Southern Belle/ex-Soldier heel, them making her face wasn't great but then again they didn't use her right. Another great wrestler WWe dropped the ball with. Ronda is a far better heel, but with it was as a face or heel WWe screwed up by throwing her into the main event. They should of built her up like the did with Shayna. The Miz is a great heel and a ok face, but like the others mentioned WWe isn't using him right.

Kinda but Daniel Bryan wasn't even gonna get a SHOT at WM 30 though as the OG Plans were that CM Punk was gonna fight Triple H then beat Batista & Orton at WM 30 all while lil ol Billy Goat Gruff was gonna go w/ either a Rematch w/ Sheamus or that 6 Person Tag Match w/ Kane or The Outlaws!
