It was bought in Germany (although, looking at the UK Amazon site, some chancer is selling these at £36.60). The retailer is called Radiancy Inc on the UK Amazon site, and it's a US, not American company. A job for trading standards I think, and Amazon need to be held accountable for gross violations of safety standards by the companies they provide services for. It's not sold with a UK plug, so I've no idea what the legal position is though. It's effectively an adapter for foreign electrical systems.

"Retardance Engineering" sums it up perfectly. Going by the location of the spark which appears on each flash test, it looks like it flashed over between the LED and that 1.5 Ohm resistor. I wonder if an actual slot would have saved it. Ironically, I think the breakdown voltage on those 'slots' may have actually been reduced by the removal of the soldermask there... Why they even felt the need to design it like that I have no idea, with better component placement they could have avoided having those tracks so close together!

Polarisation does matter. The reason is that a lot of equipment has internal fuses, especially if they are low rated. If there's an internal fault, and that fuse blows, there's a 50:50 chance it will be on the neutral and the internal circuitry will remain live. Also, an internal fuse like that provides not protection for earth faults should the fuse be on the neutral sides. In addition, any device connected with a single pole switch will remain live if that single pole switch happens to be on the neutral side. Maybe in these days of residual current protection devices it's not as important, but polarisation is always a good idea in principle.

That schuko plug is a disaster, just like the rest of the product. There are supposed to be actual spring contacts in that earth connection hole in the plug, but I can't see them here.Looks just like a folded metal piece with a hole in it.

Pins on the plug is not supposed to be sleaved on european plugs. The reses in the socket is there to prevent contact with the pins, before they make electric connection.

The Schuko-plug doesn't require a sleeving on the pins because the socket is recessed to prevent that someone come in contact with live parts, if the plug is only partially inserted. The plug itself is too small for a standard Schuko-plug. Even if the earth would be connected, you can't use it with these plugs. Actually the french plug is not polarized because there's no regulation demanding on which side L and N should be.

Being recessed is also why there is no universal fits everything adapter for it. There is no way to connect it with earth.

This isn't true. A four socket outlet with an extension lead without saved earth have only a 2-pin-design at *in* and *out*! It is not standard in Germany, Greece, or Thailand but allowed till 1200 Watt over all with 220/240V. Polarized plugs and outlets do you found only in UK standards - no other country did it for extension things. Normally all outlets on walls in Germany, Greece and Thailand are polarized with (view from out side) left = N / right = L. But the standard in Germany till the sixties/seventies was opposite of this :-((

+OldLordSpeedy There is no standard for the wiring here in Germany on which side you should install L and N on the outlet. There's only an unwritten rule if you replace or add a new outlet: Wire it the same way as the other outlets are, at least in that room. The thing with left, and in the 60s with right was Occams Razor. It's named L, so the L must be Left, most electricians think here in Germany today. In the 60s the three lines in a three-phase system were named R, S and T (today L1, L2 and L3), so they thought R must be installed on the Right side. There's no regulation about this, because you can put a plug one way or the other into the outlet, so this system is NOT polarized. Polarized means there's only one possible way to put the plug into the outlet. CEE outlets (blue or red), Terko or Perilex are polarized in Germany, but not Schuko! Extension leads without PE are banned here in Germany btw. And the small Europlugs, which you can find on several appliances like chargers for smartphones, tablets and so on are only rated for 2.5A. For appliances with more than 2.5A you must use a contour plug (contour of Schuko but without PE) which is rated for 16A. This is mostly found on class II appliances with a higher demand like vacuum cleaners, drilling machines, other power tools like angle grinders and so on.

Some travel adapters have solved this with a two piece design: first piece converts to schuko and second from schuko. Since an average user has only devices of a single plug type he does not benefit from an adapter or extension cord that accepts many different types.

This product was very common in Malaysia because they use the same UK sockets. There are no shutters. Most wiring that was made in some commercial lot that uses 3 phase was poorly wired and if one of the MCB tripped, they would unscrew the wire from the MCB, then move it to another MCB.

The polarised socket at 5:40 is a French style socket. It is also used in countries like Belgium, Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. The non polarised one is a German style, and it appears to be used throughout most of Europe. The French style socket might have live and neutral wires swapped, so live is on the left and neutral is on the right This device is also very questionable. It has the connections to earth, but no continuty. There is nothing to stop you from plugging in earthed appliances

4:45 The socket on the left is polarized but it is polarized differently in different countries. In France the line is on the right while in Czechia it is on the left. There is funny thing in the continental Europe that of the eight countries that do not use the German Schuko six are neighbors of Germany. The two others are Italy and Slovakia which used to be part of Czechoslovakia (a neighbor of Germany).

The "little blue thing" is a class Y capacitor (or masquerades as class Y) and need to be there for interference suppression.. It would be non-compliant* without it. It is also why the high voltage test was completely meaningless -- any SMPS would fail that. .Of course in all other ways the unit was perfectly compliant. :-O

Meaningless. 3000v in the low voltage side of a power supply is very liable to cause breakdowns. And it got there because of the required class Y capacitor. It is a totally invalid test.

The Y cap should go to the ground side of the 5V supply and hence the shell of the USB connector (i.e., the metal to which JW directly touched the probe). So there's no sense in which 3kV was put into or across the 5V supply, except insofar as there's apparently a too-small gap between HV and LV components (LED and electrolytic?) which should be better separated. The Y cap will leak a few milliamps at AC, but there definitely shouldn't be sparks between components; corona discharge, just possibly. Happily, there's an easy way to be sure; we just ask JW to cut one of the leads on the blue cap, and then re-test. JW, are you up for that, please? :-)

It would still not be testing what you think it is. Remember he tested from the plug, and his test voltage would therefore have been routed by the rectifier (via the transformer primary and the class Y cap to his probe). This would have induced a large voltage in the low voltage side. I don't want to be in the position of trying to defend this piece of junk but that test was completely invalid and produced meaningless results. As an aside, the "visible sparks". Iḿ not at all sure that that is what they were. I think it may have been the LED briefly lighting. Don't quote me on that though ;-).

What gets me is the Chinese approach to earthing, as is shown by every piece of dodgy Chinese kit you've ever examined. In this one there was no earth at all (was there even an earth wire in the flex?). In others the flex has an earth wire, but it's not connected in the plug - at best the wire has been stripped and the bare copper placed in proximity to the earth pin so that if you waggle the pin you might get a brief connection. Do the Chinese not understand the concept of earthing? Do they think earthing is unnecessary and just include an earth wire in the flex so it passes cursory inspection? Do they think earthing is some strange delusional belief we hold and they make a vague attempt at keeping us happy? Do they think earthing is like a good luck charm and they just make a token attempt at it for good luck? With all the Chinese stuff I've seen you an Big Clive do teardowns of, I get the impression some dodgy geezer in China decided to go into business and got some wet-behind-the-ears graduate to do the design. Somebody who has been taught how the components work, but hasn't yet been exposed in real life to the practical engineering side of tolerances, ratings and electrical clearances (pretty much how I was straight out of university many, many decades ago). Maybe not even a graduate but a hobbyist with some back-issues of the Chinese equivalent of _Practical Electronics_ or _Elektor._

I wonder about your high voltage test, you said 3000V. If that is AC you will get problems due to the capacitor and that is not a product fail! For DC you need 4242V (3000*sqrt(2)) and that is the correct way to test this type of power supply. Anyway I would not rate this one badly in my USB power supply tests (Getting close to 200 tested supplies), safety is non-existent and I doubt it can deliver much power.

Some points: - This SchuKo extension lead with four outlets are forbidden in this kind of form in Germany (and Greece, or Thailand). Do you need 3 lines (phase, neutral, saved earth) with 1.5 qmm copper cable as minimum. - For the import into the EU do you need the (CE) sign. Normally the border custom police should it check. - No check signs from TÜV or other electronic engineer test centers. Do you earn what you buy ... don't buy shit from the People Republic of China - buy own products from your local reseller!

i've come across things that could be in a way far worse, usb charger plugs with no fuse or fusible resistors in the mains side at all, multivoltage 5v and 12v 'laptop' like power supplies, with switching mosfets that could fry eggs even with minimal load on their outputs all with definitely not class y or y2 capacitors between live rectified mains and their outputs, with those multivoltage things having iec chassis plugs having aluminium pins which snag/bind on the leads you insert, and of course being soft aluminium, loose connections to the pcb terminal internally 😱😱

They should not be sleeved as the the fact that the socket is depressed is for the safety. If one uses them with old style ungrounded sockets there is a potential for a risk. This would be illegal here as it breaks the earth. On schuko that is by design. The Finnish system is based on idea that if it fits it is OK to use so it is illegal to remove the earth unless one allows only double insulated devices. These were very common in the 70s either as modifications of the plug or as extension cords. We had one on out TV. There was a tile floor that was conductive so the socket has to be earthed. The extension cords were more dangerous as when people got new TVs with flat plugs they saw the extension cord was not needed so they put it in a closet. Later when they needed an extension cord they went to the closet and took it back into use not knowing that it was dangerous. There are plenty of such cords still in use. There has been several documented fatalities because of such cords. Before mid 80s it was here illegal for an end user to do any wiring. There has been 158 documented electricity related fatalities (excluding fires) since 1980. 34 of the reports mention extension cords. is would be legal if it had an old round plug but then it would be useless on any new installation that has only earthed sockets. The point is this is being sold in the EU ( in this case Germany ) via Amazon. So much for border and customs checks already in place.

Because to import anything into the EU it needs to comply with EU standards, which is one of the main reasons Mrs May is trying to cancel Brexit.

Twig We use British Standards (BS). Eu stuff is generally shit anyway e.g. BS RCDs have a trip requirement of 1 * In at 200ms and BS (Euronorm) EN rcds require 300ms trip time.

To quote the 4 plug sockets in a fitting way, as bigclive.com would say "deathdapter" ... Not the sort of product I'd buy... most multi socket leads I have are masterplug (british general), or duraplug... That dangerous contraption... you could imaging having the tv, PS4 & sky Q plugged into that, along comes the 2 year old and in goes the pinky... zapp! It's amazing the amount of cheap chinese crap that gets in, the EU are to blame mainly for letting it in, maybe this time next year CE won't be valid anymore ans everything will have to conform to British standards and bear a kite mark.
