I'm a handyman, good with my hands and I can mimic anyone. I don't know everything (who does?) but I try to find someone who knows the most about what I'm attempting to do. I don't do tile, per se, as my expertise is plumbing but a couple of occasions arose where I was asked to replace a prefab shower stall with a custom tiled enclosure and another, from the same customer, a repair of a 6 year old tub conversion that had gone horribly wrong (leaking from the ceiling below). In both cases, I watched Bob Doyle's videos extensively along with a few others, (Sal and Isaac) and found Bob to be the master. So, I employed the 'Doyle method' on both projects and achieved excellent results with the added bonus having the confidence of being able to walk away and not look back. Some of these others (see previously mentioned) talk smack about Bob but their methods just didn't ring true to me. So if anyone reading my comment is a skilled DIY, handyman or tiler and wishes to learn or improve or even HIRE Mr. Doyle? He is the best on KZbin and the best at his craft!
@hotbam373 жыл бұрын
I totally agree, when I started doing showers I chose to learn from professor Doyle because he speaks logic to every thing he does. Some of the others are just too by the book. Bob should be writing the book though, a true master of his craft.

I'm a 67 y/o woman and am going to tackle a complete shower and bathroom renovation. I have been watching your videos to learn how to do it. I'm not a complete novice in renovations but have learned a ton on how to do the bathroom renovation from your vids. I've watched other videos but learned the most from yours. Since I'm starting from the stud level I will be able to do it right from the beginning.

Hey starr tile~ love the videos. I’m a tile installer up here in New York. Some of these jobs you come across are mind boggling. It’s scary to know these people are out there. Worst job I’ve ever seen was years ago, guy set 2x2 directly over vinyl in shower pan. I think you can imagine the rest.

Our builder spot bonded our shower wall tiles, after it failed after 1 year, I was able to tear it all off and reuse it on the floor tile on OSB (that also failed after 1 year). Its way more prevalent than people think

I used to live in Florida. Probably 80% of the installers build showers like this. Florida is probably the cheapest state to do tile work. People are paying $1000 for a shower..... $1.60 sq ft for floors.....Third world wages. Those tile guys have to skip corners in order to put food on the table and they still struggle to make ends meet 😥 You can make more money laying laminate than tile in FL. Too many tile guys, too many unlicensed contractors, too many cheap customers.

Building a shower is by far the most complicated thing you can do in a house.
@undonesofficial4 жыл бұрын
I probably would've raised that shower head out of the mosaics, but good job on the second round. Sometimes lippage is unavoidable when you have 12"×24" tiles and lay them on a brick pattern. Ultimately your finished product is determined by how well the wall was framed.
@Elier19844 жыл бұрын
You can use a leveling system to make the level
@undonesofficial4 жыл бұрын
@@Elier1984 a levelling system helps, yes, but is not 100% effective. Especially when almost all rectangular shaped tile have a slight bow in them; when doing a brick pattern it's very hard to eliminate even with a levelling system. That's why they say to do a 1/3 offset instead of 1/2, because the bow of the tile is most prominent at the middle of the tile.

the tiles in my kitchen are (dot and dab) spot bonded to the walls and they have been in place for over 30 years with no problems, spot bonding tiles can be an effective way to bond tiles to an uneven wall, granted i would NOT spot bond in a shower, but to do so in other areas is perfectly acceptable
@Alchete3 жыл бұрын
The original installer's thought process for using only thinset on top of the curb was likely because he didn't want to screw through his pan liner from the top.

@@StarrTile I got that but why? Isn't it point to let water go through the weep holes?
@StarrTile4 жыл бұрын
@@slavisasegrt4363 yes some people would say that but if you're waterproofing the surface then the whole idea of the water getting to the weep holes becomes a moot issue and not relevant any further.. And by the way those 4 weep holes are only part of a drain flange that allows water to drain..don't be focused on those alone, but going forward we're trying to prevent water from getting into the pan to begin with so we don't have any issues

Pretty sure he used the linoleum behind the deco tile to bring it up to the same plane as the tile. Deco are almost always about 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch thinner than typical 1/4" wall tile.
