I worked for a rebar manufacturing company in Windsor Ontario Canada for 9 years and without the proper benders it is difficult to get it done to perfection. Weeeeelll, you don't need perfection as long as the rebar is within the concrete just like you have done. You did a great job. As hoarder of may tools you or the inspector needs to get a sewing machine. I have one, to me it is just another tool to repair those old jeans. The trick is to open the seam down the side of the leg so it easy to patch the hole, then resew. You're a guy that can figure out how to do a ton of stuff. Love your ability to do project with what you have available to you. Keep up the good work.

You're doing a magnificent job Steve. Steve, if you haven't already poured your footing, you may want to consider putting a short piece of drain tile across the ditch and taping the ends up so you can drain water that may get inside the foundation out. and spraying a release agent on the forms will help you get the wood off after; I have seen people spray them with diesel fuel before.

Just a quick tip if you want. If you wrap a new spool of tie wire in duct tape then cut a small circle opening in one side and from that side pull out the “inside” end of the wire out the hole you can pull wire out from the inside and it works like an impromptu reel. (You have to cut and remove the wire that holds the spool together before wrapping in duct tape) It puts a bit of twist in the wire un like a spinning reel but provided you aren’t trying to pull out feet it’s not an issue. It keeps the spool from falling apart and becoming a rats nest. Just a trick I learned from one of my good heavy civil carpenter Forman I worked with in the past.

Steve Rap duct tape around the tie wire cut a hole in the middle, grab the end of the wire on the inside. Then Al you have to do is pull it out as you need it. When iron workers use the twister handle they have precut wire with eyes already on both ends. If they use rolled tie wire they use side cuters to twist the wire. Good luck and have fun!!!!!

Many years ago, helping a mate building his first house, doing the foundations 1ft dia holes up to 8ft deep and knowing that inspection was the next morning, we wondered 'how clean do the holes have to be'. A quick check of building codes informed us..clean and free of loose material. The inspectors got a good laugh when they turned up to find us cleaning the holes with a vacuum cleaner 🤣
@garymucher95904 жыл бұрын
Steve, with the amount of concrete AND rebar you are installing, if the shop ever moves, it will be the entire shop and not just a wall like before. I look forward to the next installment... Thumbs Up! With the current inspectors you have, I think I hear her say the setup for the footers looked kind of nuts... I am sure you know that squirrels have teeth that constantly ground for their entire life. So if they don't chew on hard nuts and such, their teeth will get too long for them to be able to eat. And the squirrels (lots of them too) we have around our home love to chew on the chain-link fence. Seems the aluminum ties that hold the chain-link fence wire to the top rail are one of their favorite crew metals. I've replaced them now for the third time... And the also love trailer wiring and the plastic light lens too!

I agree about the pliers and wire vs pre-made ties - the pre-made ones snap off on me right when they're getting snug. I did find that using the spool of wire in conjunction with the spinner is a fast and efficient way to work - but you do still need pliers for cutting at the very least. I ended up making my own pre-cut ties doubled over and using the spinner with good results and efficiency - but I bet I used a little more wire than absolutely necessary.

Looks good. I've been in the concrete business for 35 years and you are doing good. As far as the form work below grade it can stay there if you want. But it's good to remove the forms just for general practice. Remember bar placement in the from is 3" from dirt and 2" from air. That is been the rule of thumb since Noah build the ark. And dirt forming is a very accurate and acceptable way of doing things we do it all the time mud is cheaper than forms and labor. I did not see anything that could cause a problem. I'm up here in Ohio so if you need let me know If you need anything. Thanks for sharing.

My Bobcat bucket arm has a thru-hole perfectly sized for #4 rebar... Glad to see you had good results from your carbide blade. My experience was just the opposite and I like to think I have a good handle on cut technique. Around 100 cuts in - on fresh new bar - the blade just quit cutting. Hot-rolled scale is hard stuff. Recognize that once the concrete sets, the cobble you placed on the outside of the forms often becomes locked in and creates a whole lot of extra labor stripping the forms. Yes, it is a fine line between getting your wire tight and breaking with the twist tool. I have found that a firm pulling while twisting provides a better bind. Also, reversing/relaxing the twist just before tight to allow the loop of wire to "square up" to the rebar takes care of that last bit of slop.

You should have taken your inspector out for a nice dinner the night before, everything would have passed! I used to work like you, making sure everything was perfect, while doing projects on my first house a good friends father (retired contractor) taught me that everything below ground can be ugly as long as it's done properly. The earth will shift, ground water will move things and the next owner will change things. Great job so far I hope whoever you get for the concrete and block does as nice a job. By the way, I've never worked with an inspector so beautiful 😁

I have nearly the same set of levels, 16" instead of 24" and not masonry. You may or may not know this, you can take the rubber ends out and turn them around, they have nubs that extend beyond the edge of the rail so if you're using the level against a wall the nubs stop it from sliding around. Like if you are trying to mark a level line. Looking forward to the concrete pour!
