You are a hero for this. I thought I was going insane. Sad that it's been 4 years and 15k views and they still haven't done anything to fix this. You can't even do it if AUDIO tracks overlap your video track gaps! 🤦I also don't understand why if you can free up the Track Select Forward Tool to move things separately from other other tracks by locking the other tracks, why you couldn't do the same for this. I should be able to just lock the tracks and have the gap closing work. 🤷

It looks to me like the way it works now is right. You want it to only close gaps that go all the way through the timeline otherwise, it will completely throw off the timing in the whole video.

I agree. If you leave gaps, it should be because in general you want them there. It doesn't make sense to me to have a timeline full of redundant gaps, and the fact that by deleting all of them simultaneously the video will get automatically better sounds weird.

I was trying to find the fast way to delete all the gap and I found a tutorial about using close gap. It didn't work and I thought it was something wrong with my computer. I just want to say thank you. This video really helps me.

Figured out a workaround thanks to this video - if you select all clips EXCEPT the row (or rows) you're struggling with, ctrl+c to copy, then delete, it'll let you close the gaps on the troublesome row. then ctl+v to paste the rest of your timeline back in.

The system analysts, designers, and/or programmers must have had a different view as to the definition of a gap. Thanks. I did some tests for colour, including pushing the projected background image to a cooler temperature. That and setting my C100 to 5200 K seemed to have worked.

Thanks for showing that command which I didn't know existed. I can't imagine serious editors letting the program do something like that on more than a single track sequence. I really need to learn the keyboard shortcuts for go to the next gap in the sequence and go to the previous gap in the sequence.

Very old Ulead Media Studio Pro had a very nice gap remove/find feature. There was a window with list of gaps with its timestamps with an option to filter what gaps you want to find/remove like "only video gap", "only audio gap", "audio+video gap", by clicking on a timestamp the gap was selected in the timeline. Very nice tool.

Occasionally, I edit with short clips above and over in the timeline for various reasons and would prefer that Adobe not fix anything. The close gap feature works just like I would think it should work. Having said that, it's crucial that you would need to know and understand how it works. For that, great video.

Wowzers, thank you. I can't believe Adobe's incompetence on this one. I actually didn't even have other video footage in that spot on the timeline, but rather an audio track that was getting in the way. After I scooted it over, I was able to close the gap, no problem. Sheesh!

Would you recommend to put final touches (colors FX) on the whole video with, say, adjustment layer over all tracks (my music video Project is 12 tracks). Or export 1st..., and then apply final color FX (3rd party) on master track in a new project? Would it effect quality? Maybe you have a tutorial for that. Thank you and stay safe

I would add an Adjustment Layer in the main edit with all your tracks. There is no quality difference if you do it the second way, it just creates another Sequence that you have to manage.

Hey, thank you for the video. Indeed you're not showing a practice (or neat trick) here, but I think it's a good idea to show options or actions that might be confusing a bit, so if you create more explainers like I'll gladly watch them too :) As for the option itself - I see the logic behind it and know situations where this behaviour would be handy, but I also understand how it might be confusing for others. I guess the best solution would be to allow users either to close gaps in one selected track (new option) or in whole sequence (just like now).

If you toggle the track targeting (V1 ,V2 ,V3, so on) you can then select next in track and it will find the gap for that track only. So in this situation, selecting V1 would be ideal since V2 was your text.

Seems to work as you'd want it. Commonly, if you have overlapping footage on a v2, v3 etc, it's there based on the specific clips in v1 not as a standalone clips. If you were to close "all gaps everywhere" you'd create a whole world of issues for yourself. Basically, Premiere isn't letting you do something stupid. Then again, maybe I'm wrong, and there would be a good reason to have a close all gaps on all tracks feature.

You probably have another clip bumping into another clip. When you select the clip you want to move, look at its linked audio and see if it's hitting something. Remember, the gap has to be a Sequence gap, so nothing in that space on any track. Other than that, I have no idea why that's happening.

It sounds like you're running out of drive space. I suggest getting a larger drive and a fast one will work better. SSDs are more affordable these days.

Sorry, never considered this action as a "fault". When searching for a gap, it means I'm looking and REAL gaps in the sequence output, not a space between different items/tracks in sequence. Actually this DOES make sense... IF you think a 'gap' is what Premiere is defining as a 'gap. It's obvious 'gap' is being defined as an empty space during a specific amount of time with NO video on any track. Which does make sense to work like this.. because imagine if you have your different cut's in / out points lined up in respect to other following clips this will keep them "timed" like you placed them. Now if you wanted to remove the gaps regardless.. maybe that should be a 'setting' OR I could understand if you turned OFF the visibility of the other tracks, then PR would not take into account those gaps where visibility is off.
