FAILSAFE!!!! Creating Crash Resistant Nodegroups in Blender Geometry Nodes

Have you ever created a node group that crashed Blender by accident? Well with a couple extra nodes, you can add a failsafe to those settings that can cause you trouble. Especially when it is a combination of settings that can get out of hand! This is one method when just setting a max and min value on a node socket isn't quite enough.

Another approach is to use min/max nodes to limit a input or calculation result though this is more limited than your general approach 👍

Yeah absolutely. There are lots of ways to accomplish this sort of task. But the key is to help your nodes not get to a state where they cause you trouble.

I wish blender had similar failsafe built-in especially geometry nodes. I once accidentally applied scale to a 2 square km plane while geonodes was distributing points at density of 100 every square metre. Issue is we have to know what quantity could blow up, which we often don’t as beginners or when working with large node trees.

This is a very cool idea, Johnny. I'm crashing every couple of minutes with the new Distrubute Points in Volume node!

Yeah after I crashed one node tree several times using the subdivisions on an icosphere, I realized I needed to figure something out.

So passing the alert to the shader and switching out to a warning color would be a good idea. Well - not in this case, nothing to show color on. If only there was a dev who could whip up code to make the nodes start flashing as a warning.....

Thanks a lot! It sounds so logical and I used a lot of similar limits when writing text code but never thought of doing it in GN. I was looking for an "if...then" node and that's the switch! You woudn't know of a hidden "for each" node, would you?
