@@toxy3580 the mother herself did not know what to do in an emergency, looking at more in depth reporting. And although her daughter had an epipen, they both did not take the pen with them, why? That is negligence. Her daughter started feeling ill in the dentist surgery and correct procedure for an allergic reaction is to lay down the patient, not to have them standing up or worse, running around, it just pumps the poison through the body quicker. But the mother panicked and took her daughter to a pharmacy where she received the correct treatment, but too late. The damage was done. How could the dentist and the dentist assistant let them walk out of there, as health care professionals who should know what to do in case of allergic reactions? Well, maybe they didn't realise what was going on. And how did the mother not know how to treat her daughter in an emergency? How did she not know to lay her daughter down and call for help and how did the daughter not know what to do in case she starts feeling ill because she may ingested a milk product by accident in school or out with friends? That is sad and unfathomable. Never rely on other people, take responsibility for yourself and inform yourself, about things that could save your own life as much as humanly possible.

Why go there at all ? Why take the risk of possible mistakes? All people make mistakes, even doctors, why even take a chance with cross contamination? The mother of this girl did not know how to react in an emergency and she failed to take the epipen. The mother did the opposite from what she should have done. Why did she not inform and train herself about what to do in an emergency, as the prime carer for her daughter? No epipen and made her daughter walk from the dentist to a pharmacy, instead of lying her down and keeping her still. Those two things would have saved the girls life.

It’s the sufferer’s responsibility entirely: it’s got nothing to do with coffee shop staff who have a hard enough job catering to all the idiosyncratic demands made of them by customers. If you suffer from an allergy that endangers your life you have to take complete responsibility for what you eat and drink. This child had had the allergy for many years: she surely must have known it to be unwise to order a milky drink in a busy coffee shop

Serious issues with training, and compliance, and that's globally. In the US, 8 major allergens have to be listed on packaging..(those with the highest number of potentially fatal reactions)..however, that rarely is even known, by too many in the service industry. The 8 here are; Dairy, Eggs, Wheat, Soy, Peanuts, Tree Nuts, Fish and Seafood. So for anyone with other life threatening allergies, you read every label, and rarely dine out. It's a real problem. But this girl's death, should never have happened. I'm so sorry 💔

@jakedovey7488 You have my empathy!! I went through much the same, after my third pregnancy, for years. About the only items I could partake of, were oatmeal, dairy, eggs, oranges, and lettuce and peas. Virtually nothing else. I saw a very special healer was to be coming in from the Phillipines, at a Catholic nursing school some bit from here, and I went. And although he said he thought it was an enzyme issue, and tried and tried in his own way, apologizing he just couldn't quite get ahold of it, fact is: seeing him totally helped lessen the severity, I'd wheeze for a few minutes, instead of far worse. After a few years, I started being able to add more and more back into my diet, even!! He had instructed me to not let any water touch me, no hand washing, etc, for 24 hours. And I had followed his instructions! But never expected such a lengthy process..(nor did he). So...have faith, and I hope you find this guy!! I can't recall his name, but try new avenues till you can find that very, very special helper. Best wishes. I still can't have a number of items, but that's ok!! Bless you

No it is NOT! 'Alergy Expert Chan'. Her mother should have had an Epipen on her though; and the Dentist she went to see, SHOULD have insisted on administering the Epipen they had, as THEY were the medical expert in that situation, and as a Dentist, should be able to recognise someone going into anaphylaxis; Just as the Pharmacist, the medical expert in that situation, recognised the anaphylaxis. The number of KZbin 'experts ', who 'know ', so much more, about allergies, than medical experts, and people living with allergies, from a few snippets on the news, rather than living with, or being trained in such conditions, is SICKENING. When's the last time, you've had a child at school with food allergies, as either a teacher, parent or pupil?

@@michelleo8279 So, the fact that her school mandates a rule that an 'EpiPen' can not be brought off site, when the student that needs in it an *emergency* is also off-site and has to remain on school ground during teaching hours isn't bullshit??? Like, excuse me, are you following the conversation??? But, yes she should have more than more EpiPen with her. Apparently, though she never experienced anaphylaxis before and probably didn't think to stock up as the one she has with her is brought to school. It's a shame.

@@Chan-zn7wb Each school has a different policy; in the past, it was common for schools to have their own 'general use' Epipen/auto-adrenaline injector on site; with the pupil carrying the other, and the guardian/parent having one at home/on them; so that in most circumstances , the pupil would have access to at least one adrenaline injector, and a responsible adult, having access to the other, in case of a 'misfire ', or in case of the first dose not working; in all circumstances, an ambulance is to be called, as the Emergency team/crew, would have access to adrenaline (hence, why I'm confused, as to the dentist situation; but I digress...) For you to be calling BS, on the pupil having a pen at school, highlights to me, how little you know of the issue, as it is usually MANDATORY, for a school with a pupil at risk of anaphylaxis, to have a pen in stock (usually in the nurses office, and provided either by the parent, or the school having their own.) In my friends situation, they have an additional pen, but they had to fight, in order to get it. The pupil or mother, should have had at least one. The dentist, DEFINITELY should have had access to adrenaline; and most pharmacists, have pens in stock, although, it has been known for them to run out on very rare occasions. If you have been following the story, as far as I'm aware, the pharmacist administered adrenaline, that was AT THE DENTISTS; THIS should have been given sooner. Also; FYI, having an adrenaline injection, does not gurantee it will work immediately; as I understand it. In Natasha's case, she was given 2 x shots, that failed to stop the reaction. Either way I see it; this SHOULD NOT have happened, with this child, having access to 2 MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS: (The Dentist and the Pharmacist), who are more versed in allergic reactions, than the mother. The number of people, who cannot understand the mother's grief, I find quite disgusting. But I agree, this case is such a shame, and very sad. (Typo)*

@@Chan-zn7wb My original reply has disappeared; so take 2... It is common for a school with a pupil at risk of anaphylaxis , to have access to an adrenaline auto-injector/Epipen; with (usually) the pupil carrying the other, and a gurdian/parent carrying the third. The school adrenaline injector, used to be provided by the school, and kept on site; but due to past shortages, it is common for the 'school' Epipen, to be provided by the parent/guardian, and kept at school. The reasoning is simple; people at risk of anaphylaxis, should have access to at least 2 adrenaline injectors, in case of a misfire OR, the first pen failing to work. If you have knowledge of Natasha's case, then you should be aware, that she was administered 2 shots, that both failed to stop her allergic reaction. Also, people, experiencing anaphylaxis, may lose consciousness/be unable to think clearly, etc; particularly children/young people. The Dentist, the MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL, in the first instance, SHOULD have recognised anaphylaxis, and administered the Epipen, as they are more versed in allergic reactions, than the mother (a non-medically trained adult); and SHOULD have access to adrenaline. The PHARMACIST recognised the anaphylaxis, and administered the Epipen/adrenaline, which was at the DENTISTS (as I understand it) . THIS SHOULD have been administered sooner. The next step, is for an ambulance to be called IMMEDIATELY, as the crew have access to adrenaline, and the EpiPens given, may not work/work immediately. For you to call BS, on this pupil, having an EpiPen at school, shows me, that you are not versed in this area; either by experience or training. I do agree, that this situation is very sad, and should never have happened.

The lack of training of the staff was made worse by the dire communication between the mother and the server. She asked her to wash out the jug, confusing the Barista that this would be enough. I used to work in food service as a teenager and a similar thing happened, luckily the child was fine. There was zero training on allergies, and clearly that hasn't improved. The Health and Safety Act needs updating for scenarios like this, to ensure food service staff are up to date on allergy protocol.

If this had been me in that situation, after all the back and forth of the conversation, I would have said: you know what, just leave it, it's fine, we will just get a bottle of water. @@MaxMillion-yv8ib Apologies, I think I made a mistake and wanted to reply to someone else. But, to your point, about an apology from the company. I'm not a lawyer, maybe they were advised by their lawyers not to apologise. But at least, if that is the case they could say, we are waiting for the inquest to be concluded and our thoughts and condolences are with the family at this sad time. For minors it is always the parent that has the utmost responsibility for a child's health. Like you hold your kids hand whilst walking beside a road until they are old enough to know about road safety. You don't let a toddler play by a busy A road etc. The mother should have been informed and trained about her child's health and needs more than anyone else in the world, beside a doctor. She should have had her daughters epipen with her, too. The shop is not a hospital or pharmacy, people working there are not doctors. People make mistakes, doctors make mistakes, some can be lethal in both cases. The mother should have asked to see the ingredients list, if it wasn't offered to her and should have known that the milk content of the cocoa powder might be dangerous. It was verbally pointed out to the mother, that Cadbury's milk chocolate powder contains milk, as it says in the name. There is a culture of mollycoddling in this country. I'm originally from from Central Europe and there each grown up has to take a lot more responsibility for their own health and behaviour and especially for their children. The buck stops with the parent. I feel sorry for the mother, she has my sympathy, as a parent who nearly lost a child due to not watching my two year old and him nearly falling out of a window on the third floor onto a concrete floor. Luckily a third party saw him, just as he was climbing onto the window ledge from a a stool by the window, which had both wings open, I'm getting giddy knees just thinking about it. People have to inform and prepare themselves, when there is such a danger to their life, or the life of their child.

I've worked in cafes and restaurants for years and almost every single day we have customers like this. Legally all hospitality staff from waiters, baristas to chefs are trained on allergy management. She felt safe ordering the drink because we have such strict regulations that it's rarely ever an issue. This was a needless death and Costa is 100% at fault for failing to ensure their staff were properly trained. It's like blaming someone for getting hit by a reckless driver. There are laws and regulations in place to keep people safe but if they aren't followed and someone dies then it's the fault of the person that didn't follow the safety guidelines not the victim.

Abimbola Duyile claims she asked for two soya milk hot chocolates, telling Costa employee Urmi Akter her daughter had allergies. However, giving evidence at East London Coroner's Court, Ms Akter told the hearing Ms Duyile only requested the jug used to froth milk be thoroughly washed. The inquest ruled that “The root cause of this death is a failure to follow the processes in place to discuss allergies combined with a failure of communication between the mother and the barista.” Would the miscommunication have occurred between two individuals of the same 'demographic'?. Highly unlikely.

No, people are saying it's the mothers fault becuase the mother admitted it's her fault. She confused the barista completely and even said "this is fine" when the barista said it had cow milk.

People with allergies are allowed to eat and drink wherever they like and they ARE NOT responsible if they are harmed by what they consume (assuming that they made their allergy clearly known to staff making food and drinks) but what they ARE responsible for, is the risk they take in the first place.

Many staff employed in all these coffee shops are “overseas students” who can barely speak English. But it’s a little surprising this poor child wasn’t more self-disciplined than to place such a risky order. If she craved hot chocolate surely she could have managed to wait until she got home ?

🤔There's actually a chance that what happened was on purpose as I didn't hear if a proper full investigation was done on this case by the police. Hannah had already bought beverages from the same Costa on several other occasions but this happens on the one occasion her mother asks a worker to take extra precautions in making the hot beverages they purchased🤨Look I am gonna have to presume an investigation was done to check out things like if Hannah herself was actually served by this worker previously as if she was that would have really interesting, in fact that would have been so interesting that an arrest would've had to have made by now🚔

I'm sorry but I don't exactly agree as they weren't used to carrying any Epi-pens because Hannah's school actually banned her from having that on her, which the school is now denying.

I think your confused😕Costa had allergy guidance procedures in place which is why people with conditions like Hannah felt welcome and most importantly safe to purchase a hot beverage from one of their stores that she'd used before😥So it's Costa's fault is those procedures aren't implemented properly, which they weren't by a worker of theirs.
