This whole album is my go to driving song lol. Great choice, and I'd also like to see Sergeant Politeness, The Nurse Who Loved Me, and Solaris on this channel. Hard to choose just a few. Sometimes I really just want to hear Leo even though the fans and even the band itself seems to dump on that song a bit. (Well, they at least say it doesn't fit super well with the album, maybe they like it well enough on its own. But to me it feels like just the right mixup to keep things fresh at that point in the album.)

Failure go back with Tool as good friends and quite often toured with them. It's less that they're musically related, but more intellectually atuned. Failure are generally highly regarded for witty, ascerbic lyrics covering quite dense subjects, and for their production and engineering skills. The distorted bass guitar sounds of Failure songs are usually a high point, as well as the incredibly unusual sounds they use, and how they attain them. I personally would recommend Headstand next, which is one of the singles off their most recent album, if you want to get a picture of where they are now. Ken Andrews from the band has a KZbin channel where he has started talking a little in depth about how some of these songs were recorded, and about the process of transferring old ADAT masters to digital for the sake of remastering their first two releases.

@@billabong3549, Maynard wrote the core of Sober with a band in Grand Rapids, Michigan. You can see C.A.D Live in 1987 with early 20's Maynard bolting through many of the same words, for Turn About Out, I think. I wouldn't be surprised if Stinkfist or another track from Ænima were about drug use and Ken, maybe unspecifically. Ken Andrews did direct Tool's video for Hush, though. A fact that surprised me given Adam's work with all subsequent videos.

Dude. I'm only young, 22, turning 23 next year (holy shit.) but I discovered this band when I was around 13 or 14. The dynamics and the choice of melody that Ken Andrews & Greg Edwards employ in their songwriting, was an itch that desperately needed scratching as a coming of age adolescent who wanted to expand their music taste. As someone who grew up in a family with siblings that, almost ridiculously, are passionate about music and what goes on in the studio, I need to make it abundantly clear that discovering this band really and truly did save me. For real. Criminally underrated band, Completely unexpected that I would see anybody react to this band, but it's so unbelievably cool to see. I vaguely remember seeing a documentary on KZbin about Failure. I remember the songwriters talking about 'Stuck on You,' specifically the lead melody that starts off the song. It was a keyboard plugged into a guitar amp with the gain/distortion turned all the way up. it's a weird sound that I've yet to hear duplicated, but it serves the song so damn well. It goes to show you that just when you think you know all the rules when it comes to composition, there is ALWAYS somebody willing to break the rules; boundaries that musicians really shouldn't be scared to cross. Love the content, defintely earned my subscription. Keep 'em coming!

I think I heard of Failure over the years, but never heard anything from them, that I know of. This song is sooooo good! That hook is catchy as hell, I'm gonna have it in my head the rest of the week! I also love the simplicity of it, especially in the back-end, with the drums and bass work. With how the track was set up, they could have easily had a simple one minute or longer solo section after that 2nd chorus (or even 3rd,) but they chose to keep it simple and change up the melody, keep it clean, and really hammer in just how radio friendly this track is. Going to have to check out more of them! Thanks for the vid, Geebz, and thanks to all who requested this band!

They actually did use a keyboard in the studio for the arpeggiated tones at the beginning of the song (and throughout). However, in the 90s they didn't bring a keyboard with them on tour so they played that part with a guitar. It sounded nothing like the album cut of the song but it was neat to hear it anyway! Greg Edwards plays that part with a proper keyboard in all of their shows these days.

Thank you for covering this album. One of the great “lost and missed” bands of the 90s and early 2000’s. Bands that people kinda glossed over and didn’t get the attention they deserved because of oversaturated garbage radio rock. Bands like failure, dredg, cave-in, or even Silverchair’s diorama record. It wasn’t “radio” enough but man, bands like this really saved that whole era of music for me. Ps. I’ve bought you a cup of coffee before and requested dredg. I’m sure you got tons of backed up requests but I just would love to just see what you think of Dredg’s song “the canyon behind her” Based on what you said in this video, I think you’d love Dredg’s album el cielo as a whole. Cool story behind the record too.

Last five tracks of this album = best closing to an album ever. The only thing to rival Daylight ending Fantastic Planet is The Scientists ending Hum’s Downward is Heavenward.

Fabulous band. Good song, and even better songs from the album would be Another Space Song and Saturday Saviour. A similar vibe can be found in a band called HUM. You should really (finally) check out “Afternoon With the Axolotls” or “Isle of the Cheetah.” (please!!)

Greg Edwards is responsible for Justin Chancellor playing Wal bass guitars. I believe Greg’s bass (spray painted silver!) was used on Aenima.

Lusk. One album (Free Mars), kind of a super group made up of Ex-Tool and Failure people. From Wiki: Lusk included Paul D'Amour (formerly of Tool), Brad Laner (Medicine), Chris Pitman (Guns N' Roses), and Failure and Autolux member Greg Edwards. "Mindray" and "Backworlds" are incredible songs.

Fantastic Planet is a top 10 best ever. In case it hasn't been mentioned, the intro is piano. Distorted piano. ❤

Wow, didn't expert Failure here! This song is underrated af. It should be one of the greatest 90s hits up there with Nirvana's songs

Bro, get out of my head lol. I was thinking of suggesting failure. Lo, and behold. Fantastic Planet and Magnified were the soundtracks to my high school years. Also, I've recreated the opening "riff" with an electric piano running through a boss metal zone and a good reverb.....sounded faithful.
