This is the first video of a miniseries that records the offer and the atmosphere of the „obor” (cattle fair) in Humulesti on a fair day in December 2023. Humulesti is the village famous for the storyteller Ion Creanga who was born here. The village belongs to the town of Târgu Neamt, being separated from it by the Ozana River. The „obor” is currently much more than its name suggests. The „obor” is no longer just a simple cattle fair, but a real bazaar, with everything. The fairground in Humulesti is the heir to the old fairs in Târgu Neamt, and we are reminded here of the fair where about 170 years ago the child Ion Creange tried to sell the hoopoe, only that fairground was at the foot of the Neamt Fortress. Over time, the location of the cattle fair in Târgu Neamt kept migrating until it arrived here, in Humulesti, on the banks of the Ozana river. In fact, in the area of the fair was the bathing place of the child Ion Creangă and to which is related an incident told by the author in "Childhood Memories" and replayed by us in a video: www.youtube. com/watch?v=PVpREdgQ48Q
Although it is early December, the weather is not yet cold. It is a weekly market day, but for a short time (1-2 months) it breaks the tradition: the local authorities have changed the market day from Monday to Saturday. The first stall that attracts our attention is that of Mr. Butnariu from Grumazesti (a large commune near Târgu Neamt) who makes and sells traditional hats made of lamb fur, being the owner of a flock of over 300 sheep. You can learn about the secrets of this craft, which is beginning to be lost because these hats are no longer fashionable, by watching the video (with subtitles).
