This scene indeed is the highlight and that is when I get to see the weakness in their relationship...the rosy relationship displayed yet there seems to be the looming danger of something about to happen which climaxes in this scene, his choice of words...to chose to bring in the idea of abuse and shadow her momment of success...portrays his real character and insecurities...

Great movie, I was glued every step of the way. What I would have loved to see was a great ending to it, Luke coming to his senses before damaging their relationship and Emily being more understanding of Luke... I mean come now, who would like their fiancee going out in the middle of the night with their boss and coming drunk home... One word, disrespect. Realistic movie, great...!
@victoriac847
@victoriac847 Жыл бұрын
I think that the purpose of those scenes were to a) show that Emily wasn’t totally innocent/perfect so we the viewer can find ourselves wondering whose in the wrong as the story builds but also b) show exactly what men stereotypically do when they get a promotion in this setting. If anything she’s more justified doing those things since her character feels she has to prove herself to her male colleagues. It’s very thought provoking!

2:46 What a contradictory statement chole (Director) have given that she (phoebe) apologized first was not because of gender dynamics (truly a feminist pushing the woke agenda) but the fact that she (phoebe) herself told him (alden) earlier in the film that he is up for promotion but eventually gets handed over to her that is why she apologized first cause ofcourse he was expecting it but didn't get it, he'd feel bad that the next successor of the position that he wanted is none other than his fellow analysts who happens to be his fiancée. In the end I'd like to admit that it's a film that is really tense especially the end the fact that luke was supportive at the start but compilations of situations that he went through such as office talk about how did she got promoted so soon and other guy says don't you about sex. the crucial part was, she kept telling him she'd help him in his career but whole bunch of thing happened but promotion, things went on she kept answering late night calls of her boss , coming home drunk, and the drunk talk is just another level. he had endure it all the things for example in latter parts of film when campbell (boss) touch her in a friendly office i believe he couldn't bear it. And then luke got himself into self help/motivation hole changing his personality to jealous and all bunch of BS. it was gradual change and eventually luke burst out badly not only towords his relationship but jobs profile. the only thing that led to all of this is that her not saying to him that his boss doesn't want him when she tried for promotion of his. say him that his boss doesn't think any future prospect for him. Lack of Clear communication was first nail in coffin.

spoiler alert. I enjoyed this movie. Such as amazing performance by Phoebe Dynevor. Two people in passionate love ruined by the man being unable to cope with his partner being better than him at the same job. All men hope that they would be able to manage this situation but her partner played by Alden Ehrenreich just slowly unravels. Very sad to see this relationship breakdown.

Enjoyed the analysis but she’s leaving out the critical element here - he had been told he got the promotion and will now be her subordinate. Of course that makes this extremely uncomfortable. Absent those variables, I seriously doubt the typical guy feels threatened or emasculated by a female partner’s success

You may be right, but men definitely feel a way about a woman being more successful than them. Especially when so much of society has ingrained that men are supposed to be the breadwinners.
@LunaLinguine
@LunaLinguine Жыл бұрын
No, she isn't; you're actually missing it. When they both thought he was going to get the promotion, and she would be his subordinate, she wasn't threatened; she was the one sneaking off to tell him, she was happy for him, they had sex that night, etc. She could handle it; he couldn't. This film illuminates male fragility. And the point I think Chloe made with this film was that it is the denial of feelings of inferiority/insecurity/shame is what destroys people and relationships. So, I would question your doubts about the "typical guy".

I don’t relate to women like her at all. Her masking and behaving like a low life finance bro and going along with laughing about the fraternity sexual assault is disturbing. Weak men and weak women are equally toxic. I also detest sex scenes that follow domestic abuse. The acting was very good and captured the tension well.

I don't see any great director explaining his/her film like a school cinema techer, as she does. Why she choose this or that light. Fellini, e.g., once answered to a journalist about the sens of his movie : "There is no explanation. Cinema is a dream", he said. Period. Don't explain, just do it. But she is on Netflix, Fellini was an artist. And so Scorcese, Spike Lee, and so many others...

Its amazing how thr producer created this scene and still doesnt understand why he reacted the way he did. She told him he was getting the promotion. They celebrated it and then an hour later she gets the promotion. When you celebrate a win and find out you lost, you need time to process and then get clarity. If the scene was different where they didnt celebrate and she didnt hype him up and both wanted the promotion and she ends up getting it and he still reacts this way then everything shes saying here is valid. She should also be reminding the audience how emotionally dangerous the hedge fund industry is and how it breaks even the most mentally strong.

@@Blingblow_779 I'd assume it matters because it's common in a relationship to let your partner know you are safe and I'll assume it's also common to inform a partner of good/bad news over a quick call or text.
