How do you get drum punch with this compressor ? What settings do you start with?

It can be done a few different ways, but one of the best /most classic ways is to have your drum bus sent to an aux, and put this compressor on that aux bus. On that bus you would have the compressor going very strong, with threshold turned up very high, making the needle go very far down. This "squashes" the drum, removing the dynamics. Once the signal is squished, set the meter to output and increase the output signal until it kisses the zero. Then, turn that aux bus up or down to blend it back in with the original drum. (if you need even more volume for any reason do it post compressor with a clean gain plug in) This will increase the power of the drums, because you would have the dynamic original drums blended in with a non-dynamic squished signal. The squished signal should sound pretty strange / weird / distorted on its own, so don't put too much, but it will be a subtle increase in power if blended back in. Also, the drum track does matter. Do you want kick drum low punch sound? Snare Punch crispy sound? If you want more snare power use the fairchilds side chain to filter out the lower frequencies. If the side chain knobs aren't used, there will be a very high chance that the kicks will be triggering the compressor and giving you more kick drum punch. And finally, if you do all this and the drum doesn't hit still the way you want, answers will be found in mixing. Duck the bass when the kicks hit, stereo field etc. Hope that helps!
