Faire is the Heaven
Written in 1925, 'Faire is the Heaven' remains a cornerstone of the Anglican repertory. It is a spaciously conceived and richly romantic setting for double choir of a fine and little-known text.
LYRICS:
Faire is the heaven, where happy soules have place,
In full enjoyment of felicitie,
Whence they doe still behold the glorious face
Of the divine eternall Majestie.
Yet farre more faire be those bright Cherubins,
Which all with golden wings are overdight,
And those eternall burning Seraphins,
Which from their faces dart out fiery light;
Yet fairer than they both, and much more bright
Be th’Angels and Archangels, which attend
On Gods owne person, without rest or end.
These then in faire each other farre excelling,
As to the Highest they approach more neare,
Yet is that Highest farre beyond all telling,
Fairer than all the rest which there appeare,
Though all their beauties joynd together were;
How then can mortalle tongue hope to expresse
The image of such endlesse perfectnesse?
(Edmund Spenser, from An Hymne of Heavenly Beautie, 1596)
Treasures of English Church Music
46 tracks of English a cappella church music, featuring John Rutter conducting the Cambridge Singers, and recorded in the inspiring setting of the Lady Chapel of Ely Cathedral.
“A marvellous collection taken from all ages of Church Music - a mix of the popular and the slightly rarer. This is recorded in Ely Cathedral and it seems to have projected itself into some wonderfully lyric pieces - the opening track of Parsons Ave Maria sets the scene for the rest of the music. This is the Cambridge Singers at their best…” Cathedral Music
John Rutter, English composer and conductor, is associated with choral music throughout the world. His recordings with the Cambridge Singers (the professional chamber choir he set up in 1983) have reached a wide global audience, many of them featuring his own music in definitive versions. Among John’s best-known choral works are Gloria, Requiem, Magnificat, Mass of the Children, and Visions, together with many church anthems, choral songs and Christmas carols.
