To say that a ring modulator multiplies two signals together (the internal VCO & the input signal), is technically correct, but fails to describe what effect it actually has on the resultant output frequencies. Ring modulators produce both the SUM and DIFFERENCE frequencies between the two signals being multiplied. So for example, setting the VCO at 400HZ and playing a note at 300HZ will produce an output with both 100HZ and 700HZ. And playing a note at 500HZ will also produce 100HZ but this time with 900HZ. When you play the exact same note as the VCO, you'll only get one output frequency, at twice the note frequency (sum only, since the difference is 0). That is why the LPF is useful here, because it allows you to filter out the higher frequency sum and leave the lower frequency difference, if you like. Note that setting the VCO to the upper end of the frequency range of the input signal, can have the effect, when listening to the difference signal, of turning a rising sequence of tones into a descending sequence of tones. Try it, set the VCO to a higher frequency, then either slowly pitch bend a note or do a slide up a string to create a rising tone, you'll hear a descending lower tone out of the modulator. Ring modulators are used in radio and microwave circuits to down convert frequencies.

so you're basically saying "there is a ring modulator in a microwave"? I'll have to check that out and put my microwave on the pedalboard. where's the input jack?

For the sound/noise maker/sculptor there is an endless range of amazing sounds to be found in this box. And yet there is also a wide range of absolutely gorgeously rich conventional vibe and trem sounds in it as well. Recently I've been feeding my CT5 and my Outward with bell tones from it and having endless "fun". Small changes yield big results and it takes a lot of time to tweak to its many sweet spots but its well worth the effort...a main stay pedal for me it has been on my board since I got it about 12 years ago.

PP TheSailor Super late response, but you can get them cheaper depending on what shops you go to. I frequent a guitar shop that isn't a chain (i.e. Guitar Center) and found my Fairfield Shallow Water for $260. Online it's $325, not including whatever shipping fees would be from Canada to TN. Good luck, mate!

Great video, think I've watched it about 20 times now. I am not a guitarist but have been keeping my eye out for a tremolo for use with my Fender Rhodes. Can't find any youtube vid examples but have a feeling it would match up quite nicely, do you think this pedal would be a good match?
@ElliotGKnapp6 жыл бұрын
Did you end up picking a specific tremolo? As an owner of this pedal and the Seymour Duncan Shape Shifter, my preference is for the Shape Shifter--the tremolo on the Randy's Revenge has a unique character because it's ring mod-driven, but it isn't super tweakable, and the price is steep if you're just looking for a trem. Then again, if you want to use the ring mod settings, you can get some pretty sweet Miles Davis fusion sounds out of that Rhodes! Shape Shifter is super tweakable in terms of waveform, phase, depth, etc., and it's stereo, which is a huge bonus for tremolo, especially for a Rhodes. Chase Bliss Gravitas is another good option; probably a few more trem style options than the SS but unfortunately no stereo.
@burmanon114 жыл бұрын
I've got this and a fulltone Supatrem 2. The stereo one (suitcase in a box)
@FatHandof4 жыл бұрын
Elliot Knapp I only just noticed this reply, sorry for leaving you hanging for two years. I still have no tremolo, most of my work of late has been recording at home for folk and I can do most of my effects it in the box. I use my Nord for jamming in bands and the onboard option is usually good enough for that. Like you said, this box sounds like it would be good for some experimental tones! Last pedals I bought were Oto machines Bim, Bam and Boum. I figured I needed to cool it a bit on effects after that. There are so many good ones out there, it is very hard to resist.
