you guys need the worlds biggest belt sander!!! Pity about the pandemic, a lot of volunteers would help you in sanding and fairing. Love the project, cant wait to see another square tops'l on the open seas. Keep at it.

Fairing removes the highs and lows of the surfaces of the Frames to match them up to prepare the boat for planking. It create a similar surface between the frames. So when you attach the planks they give the planks a uniformed surface. So the surface of the boat will look uniformed and sail smoothly through the water so it creates less drag.

This tool (Curved Planer) is useful to fairing the frames & the planks on inside round surfaces. Makita 1002BA 4-3/8 Inch Curved Base Planer. It goes with the grain of wood not cross grain.

So you're going to plank the inside of the frames? What's the point of that?
@mm-hl7gh3 жыл бұрын
i am sure the outside will get planks as well, no worries.. its very certainly no mistake.
@leotard25363 жыл бұрын
@@mm-hl7gh Yeah, but do you know why they would plank the inside, too? That could make it harder to plug holes from the inside.
@MiQBohlin3 жыл бұрын
There is no reason to believe they are planking the inside of a ship. Edit: Now I know better. Thnx everyone for sharing your thoughts and experiences. As said before, this is a trade who’s partly died off. Great to be able to learn via KZbin. 💪🏽

Actually it is quite near to the water, like a normal Shipyard. Guess they are going to put out some rolling timbers and drive her to sea.

Put Sailcargo.org into google earth it will take you to the place.
@nickgreenwood28543 жыл бұрын
@@Mr321Meiner this is true she is near the water, BUT, shes going to be several hundred tons by the time she can float. I suppose a flat boarded track with plenty of grease and loads of people with block n tackles working in unison will move her, but what about keeping her upright. If it falls over it isn't going to be so easy getting her upright again. I'd be interested to hear their proposals.

what's the point of fairing the inside?
@FloydBromley3 жыл бұрын
Added strength
@n1352-m1i3 жыл бұрын
@@FloydBromley by removing wood ?
@FloydBromley3 жыл бұрын
@@n1352-m1i that’s my guess. The smoother a material the less stress concentrations occur, so less likely to develop a crack.
@n1352-m1i3 жыл бұрын
@@FloydBromley ok, maybe so... though here it is not smoothing each frame one by one that is presented, but rather fairing frames against a common line like one would do for the outside before planking.
@FloydBromley3 жыл бұрын
@@n1352-m1i I’m not that familiar with ship building, but I do believe they are planning the inside to gain strength. I’m assuming the fairing process has something to do with that.
