Some years ago I used to work at a boat yard in the fiberglass department. There was a cloth we used that went between the Fiberglass and the bag when we SCRIMPed parts. I can't remember what it was but it left a dull finish to the resin and was easy to sand and fair out. I bet once the gel coat tacks but is not fully cured you could lay it on there as well. PEEL-PLY!!!!! best stuff ever. You lay up your part, put this on last when the resin is still wet, roll the bubbles out and let it cure. Once the part is all cured peel it off and TA DAAA! No sticky, smooth and nice to the touch. I think it's funny you wear PPE sanding but not while mixing and using chemicals. I couldn't work with polys or mek without a respirator, it made me feel like crap. Some of the I worked with were so burnt out at the end of the day. Maybe you have good ventilation at your place. I'm really enjoying your videos, keep it up. You've gained a subscriber.

Andy a small tip, for doing intricate sanding in tight small areas where a sander fit well i was shown something that is almost embarrassing especially if people find it your tool box but....uummm you can use "lady massage" if you know what i mean? Just put foam backed velcro and you can attach sandpaper and they available in well all shapes and sizes, or so i am told. They work and usually adjustable speed, again so i am told lol. Anyway will see you next week.

to get those large areas flat I use melamine with 4 oz of mat and screw it to the part with the glass sandwiched between the part and the melamine. It comes out flat and quicker to spraying it. Not tell a mastercraftsman like you need to do it, just sharing. Have a blessed day!!!

Great video Andy! I wish I could video the looks that I get at the fiberglass supply house when I say that I don't want any waxed resin, and buy the PVA instead! They look at me as if I was an idiot! Your method of using PVA over the resin has saved me a ton of work, and it's just the best way to cure up the resin that I've found, here in Florida! This video on the console came at the perfect time for me & my project, THANK YOU! You are the MAN!! I love that fairing compound but what’s the best way to finish over it? Gelcoat wont cure, even with wax additive correct? Do you have to paint over it and is there a specific type of paint or any additives needed for the paint to cure?

When the fairing compound is set up, before you "hot coat" another layer, you can easily knock down any high spots with a Surform. Andy may not leave enough peaks and high spots to need this step, but I do!

On the wider trowling knives, we place are hands on the outside edges of the blade and pull from there. With post fairings the outside edges will flex just enough to allow a soft scooping out in the middle

Thanks for explaining the gelcoat thing. I thought it was your top layer but I see it gives you some sanding grace and I also thought you could put gelcoat as your finish but now I see you cannot put gelcoat over the Total Boat Farring compound. I love how that stuff mixes.

I have a question. Whenever I use wood (balsa, pine, oak) core to fill in a hole that used to have coring within a year I always end up seeing the impression of the hole (in the right light) and this is after body work, priming, painting and color sanding. I've had to resort to filling holes with closed cell 2 part expansion foam (8lb). They never seem to come back with it. You ever had this issue?

Do you have to gelcoat/pva the back side of a polyester resin layup to get it to cure? Like i understand that the back of the layup is sealed from the air in the areas of the existing fiber glass but what about the portion of the layup over the hole, does it cure on the backside?

If you’re adding a wax additive to the last layer to get it to cure and sand what ratio do you use I have polystyrene additive sanding aid for adding to my polyester layer but I do not know my ratios and nothing on the Internet or on the can are helping me and gel coat is expensive in comparison and I hate to spend $80 a gallon to just send it back out to cure?

Hey Andy, just watched your CSM Epoxy video and it got me thinking about all the questions I had regarding fillers. A few years ago I filled in transom holes, and fiberglassed some Starboard pucks to the transom for mounting underwater lights without drilling more holes in the boat. I used the Bondo Fiberglass Resin because it was available at the local store but I needed a filler to thicken the resin into a paste so it would stay in the holes and vertical surfaces. I went to West Marine and they had a whole bunch of West System fillers of all different prices. I got the cheapest one and for the little bit I needed, it seemed to do the job, but I still don't know what all the options are for or the benefits/cons of each. Can you do a video or include a segment in one about fillers and the differences? Thank you and keep up the good work!

It would be very interesting to see more about how this boat was converted from inboard to outboard power. This sounds like a cost-effective way to resurrect old inboard boats with seized engines. There are tons of really nice yachts you can buy for next to nothing because of non-functional engines. A way to get them moving again for a few thousand dollars would be very useful to people who couldn't otherwise afford them

Andy, 2 questions as you are quite a professional and expert in the fiberglass business. I am planning on removing my headliner in my cabin and I want to make it with a modern look by smoothing it out and painting it. What is the best way to do this and what materials do I use? Is it the same process as the outside - i. e. such as fairing, gelcoat, etc.? The other question I have is that I was thinking about is extending my stringers and making an outboard bracket. I figured that if I use laminating polyester resin it would make the job easier, while it will allow me to build on the layers of glass - do you recommend this approach? Appreciate any advice you can give - thank you!

Andy will have to confirm, but I think the answer is, no. The reason is that the glass patch was done using polyester resin and the fairing compound is epoxy based.

@@cheztaylor8-You're right about the lay up being poly, and the fairing compound epoxy, but epoxy will stick to poly, not the other way around. I think the main reason is, to ensure the poly is sealed from air you'd have to put more fairing compound on, which means more sanding. By using gel coat and PVA, or just PVA, you sealed the poly to cure it, and it's a thinner layer to sand. My 2 cents...

Concerning polyester resin rather than epoxy and which would be the most appropriate to use, I need to add some layers of glass the forward ends of my engine bearers. Previous owner installed shims at the forward end of the forward engine mountings. The shim's purpose was to take up gap between bottom of engine mounting and engine bearer when previous owner did a bad job of installing an engine with a longer footprint. The engine is coming out soon and then I need to replace the shims. I'm planning to sand away existing bilge paint and prep for laying glass patches in. Then I'll sand it to replicate the existing profile and then fresh bilge paint. coming to the question, the yacht was built using polyester resin and one of your videos shows how polyester is absorbed into the glass more efficiently compared to epoxy. Now, the question is: I can mix epoxy, use that and it'll cure. Can i do the same with polyester without having to cover in some other layer in order for it to cure?

Can you show a video on how to put self tapping screws into fiberglass......I predrilled and hand put the screws into the fiberglass, and they still sheared off. Once they have sheared off, how do you get the screws out if the screw shaft is flush with the fiberglass without causing huge damage..

Woodworking companies, like Rockler , sell a tool called a screw extraxtor. Basically a hollow tube with sharpened points on the end, that you put over a broken screw, and drill. The broken screw will come up the hollow tube and then you plug the hole. When I worked at a boat repair shop, we used to use then on wood to remove broken screws, don't see why it wouldn't work with fg. You gotta fix the screw hole anyway, it's just a little bigger...:-)

Three questions, if I may Sir: 1. What about the exposed section of that new glass you did? Doesn't that need to be covered to cure properly? If there's no access to the back, you can't spray PVA. 2. Do you use different grits when hand sanding vs power sanding, or must you use the same grits just way more elbow grease? 3. What grit sand paper do you start and finish with?

He is working with so called laminating resins. They won't fully cure if exposed to air. That's why he needs to use these "covers". You can add some 1-2% of wax into the resin or gelcoat to make it harden even if exposed to atmosphere, but then you need to sand between layers...
