Not just the fuel quantity indicator but the management and distribution system. Running out of fuel is only one risk. The main issue is not being able to keep the weight balanced by moving the fuel between tanks.

@kbhasi2 ай бұрын
Yep, better to be safe than sorry, otherwise, more lives could've been lost. I do remember an episode of Mayday (or Air Crash Investigation) where a plane crashed due to an incorrect fuel gauge (intended for a different aircraft model) having been installed which then indicated there was still fuel when there wasn't.

@grandnagus58512 ай бұрын
If i don't have any idea of how much fuel i have left, i know i don't have enough, by default, so safety first should be the fallback strategy. Hence it's 100% the right choice, in both cases, to return and divert.

I mean, it's not like JetBlue had a choice, they are legally obligated to put passengers on the next available filght after a certain length of delay from the EU. And I can imagine since Paris and Dublin to New York are both popular routes there were quite a few spare seats available on legacy airlines.

That diversion was intentional on the second time. Well intentional meaning they chose Dublin because they’ve got a partnership with Aer Lingus. Would’ve been easier to rebook them on Dublin to JFK flights with Aer Lingus to secure any tickets from Air France.

I am sorry, but these small twin engine airbuses, even if they are designared 'LR' are not meant for trans atlantic crossings, especially westbound. However, airlines want to save money and make their stockholders happy at the expense of passenger comfort and safety. I will never fly on Jetblue to/from Europe when I can fly on a real trans atlantic airline with wide body aircraft that has the full range capacity required.

Diverted to France and Dublin when Shannon or cork airports were far nearer on both occasions, would have been much safer to choose one of those two airports
@luisartiach19702 ай бұрын
Much safer? They weren’t completely sure how much fuel they had, but still knew the whereabouts of how much fuel they did have. And the aircraft has a significantly lower maximum landing weight compared to the maximum takeoff weight to which they were close on departure. So Paris was the best destination for the passengers seeing that the aircraft was not in imminent danger, and for Dublin maybe they had more maintenance and spare parts over there.
