My first time flying on a Boeing 757 WAS on Icelandair's 300 with the tail number TF-FIX from London Heathrow to Keflavik back in 2008. Funny enough, the second ever video I uploaded on my channel 16 years ago was from aboard that very aircraft. Happy to have captured moments on that Flying Pencil. Gonna miss them.

I flew with Iceland Air a couple of times from YYZ to AMS. With that carrier I had the first experience of flying over the Atlantic with a narrow body aircraft. I have become a fan. I like the smaller aircraft from both the pre and post flight experience. With check-in, boarding, exiting the plane, getting through customs and then getting luggage. All of those steps are just less busy than in the days when most cross Atlantic flights were big wide body jets like the 747's. 3-3 seating also feels less busy than the larger number of seats together in the middle of the big wide body jets. I was bumped to Saga. When Saga first came out, the Lie-Flat seats were only just starting to get deployed widely. Iceland Air's significantly lower cost than business class with legacy carriers made it competitive. Today is feels more like a really good premium economy. Far more comfortable than coach for long hall. When flying YYZ -> KEF - AMS, the flights are never longer than 6 hours so the comfort of a good premium economy is just fine. It would be lacking a bit comfort if flying from DEN or SEA. Over all I've had really good experiences with my flights. The crew both on the plane and those on the ground have been exceptionally friendly. I wish them well with their growth and I'm sure the new aircraft will be nicer than the old 757's. They were great planes for their day... but the world moves forward.

I help build this airplane during my stint as a structures Manufacturing Engineer for Boeing in the 90's. It was a period of changing technology in which the airplane's frames, stringers, and skins assembly transitioned from being located and joined by huge amounts of large tooling to much more simply and accurately being mated up by common pilot holes (determinate assembly). Boeing did everything to attempt to drive down the cost of manufacturing this airplane, but was not successful, in contrast to their more successful 737. So when sales started to dry up, it was the end of the road. And the end of my particular job. But what a good looking airplane it was, even in pencil form.

And the fact that if Boeing kept making 757s they probably would never have any any of the max incidents or any of the drama only makes it worse .
@MrSchwabentier27 күн бұрын
They still would have needed to rework the 737 to compete with the A320neo. So why would the continuation of the 757 prevent the MAX accidents?
@liambengif766327 күн бұрын
@@MrSchwabentierThe biggest issue with the 737 was that they kept the same airframe over and over, a low, old airframe, which they had to figure out how to put bigger engines on . Boeing could have easily made changes to the 757-200, including adding more efficient engines without ever needing MCAS due to the higher clearance height . An NG version of the 752 would be able to compete with the a320 neo (probably the 321). If they never discontinued the 757, they would have been much better off making a max version of its airframe.
@MrSchwabentier27 күн бұрын
@ a ng version of the 757 would be a A321 competitor but also only for the longer routes. But it wouldn’t stand a chance against the A320neo because it’s too big and heavy. There is a reason 737 and 757 existed at the same time. And while I agree that a reengined 757 would have been a good idea it doesn’t change the need for the 737 MAX. Except maybe the MAX-10.
@liambengif766327 күн бұрын
@@MrSchwabentier Your correct. The 737MAX would still probably be made. And the issues? those are probably more because Boeing acquired McDonnel Douglas and all their cheap practices than because Boeing made the max at all .
@MrSchwabentier27 күн бұрын
@ probably, the 787 also had its problems initially with self igniting batteries if you remember.

@wonderlustking673525 күн бұрын
Boeing dropped developing A321XLR competitor, now that they realized what a mistake that was - even if they were to start now, it would not be done before mid-2030s, at which point they might as well aim at 9000km+ range in a narrowbody. Many existing\former users of 757 are buying XLRs now, those who never had them like Wizz air are buying XLRs anyway to open new routes not accessible on a traditional A320\321.
