Howard Ashman originally pitched Friend Like Me to be in the style of Cab Calloway and Fats Waller's songs from the 1930s' and recorded a demo showcasing what it would be like with that style. Then when production was restarted on Aladdin, Alan Menken (The composer for both Aladdin movies the 1992 film and the 2019 film) had Robin Williams (the original voice of The Genie) sing Friend Like Me the way he and Howard wanted him to (Howard passed away on March 14, 1991 a year, 8 months, and 11 days before Aladdin was released so Tim Rice took over Howard's place after he passed from AIDs) but Robin also used some of his stand-up persona and replaced some of Howard's lines in the final version.
