To all whiny people there saying "it looks like too much Fairy Tail", that is because Mashima Hiro-sensei has a distinct artstyle. Some mangakas have the same artstyles in all their works and some can change theirs (prime example is Takeshi Obata-sensei, the artist for Death Note and Bakuman, two mangas with different artstyles made by the same artist, but both has good stories)

I'm so happy that the art style is the same, it really gets that nostalgia feeling when you see it. Let's hope Hiro writes an adventure story (I would kill for something like treasure planet, aka the searching for this great treasure, but not like one piece) The adventure part of fairy tail was written way better than the fight scenes, which I hope get's done better here. I agree that the MC looks like a combination of Natsu and Gray. It doesn't look like Natsu with Gray's hair though. I know for sure that his eyes is a combination of the two. As for the Heroine, I also agree that it resembles Carla and Lucy with a little bit of Mirajane (especially if their hair is of the same color). Anyway, the characters may be inspired from Hiro Mashima's previous works but it doesn't mean that he just combined/modified his character's traits. It's just that, he's been given a unique artstyle and been working on it for a long time, that is why the pattern for drawing the characters are very much the same that you may misunderstood them as a rip-off from his previous works.

The Gaming Pal Wolfang He's already had a main character with the name Aki, and I don't think feminine names matter since I'm pretty sure the name Natsu is used mainly with girls in Japan. So I'm going with Fuyu as the main character, but Hiro Mashima can always go with some alternative name that is related to seasons like he did with his other main character Shiki. Which I think means like 4 seasons or something.

Lordmev Most of the people you mentioned belong to the same family branch. How do you want them to look? One like Luffy and other like Ban? Characters can look same in their own given universe, but when their design language looks similar then we have problem. Mashima is running out of ideas, just like Akira Toriyama (though Toriyama San is very skilled when it comes to designing his characters and the world they live in.) Im really glad he is taking a different direction he needs to get out of the box that is Fairy Tail and Rave Master to improve his art skills which are already pretty high and professional, but an artist shouldnt stop improving. For the art a lot of people might say it looks like FT but what can he do about it? I know is hard to believe or to understand but once a person has found his way of drawing is really difficult to change it. Just look Jojos bizarre adventure with the early part 4. Josuke is pretty much a carbon copy of Jotaro in the early chapters designs. Later on he start drawing him differently until we got the actual design of Josuke and then later on he continue to change his style in other parts. Same happened here when Rave Master finished. Natsu and Lucy look pretty similar to Haru and Elie. Later on he refined his art to make it more according to the story. My point is change is not something that happens in one day, is part of a process.

Hiro Mashima is not a bad author, and I'm exited to see how this will turn out. Fairy Tail, whether you loved it or hated it, did have some great premises and story arc plots, but it also had some fundamental flaws such as weak character development, and of the "ripped off" designs if you think that way. If Mashima is truly dedicated to his work, this will no doubt be much better than Fairy Tail and I hope that Mashima works on his weaknesses and improved his strengths. I hope to see a great series, and hopefully a good anime to go along with it, but my fingers are crossed.

Well Haru and Shiki also looked quite similar to Natsu, so it is no suprise. And i call it now, he is called Aki or Fuyu. The irony. I used to watch Fairy Tail when I was like 15 and when I made my Gmail account (Like, 4-5 years ago) I put Natsu as my icon just because I couldn't think in other thing. Plus, I only use my YT account to listen music and follow some people but I never really cared about changing the icon or something. And I'm not a hater. For me, Fairy Tail was awesome in the beggining, but that's it. It was a bad story, it was wasted potential and for what I saw in the final chapter, It has a bad ending too. To be honest I really do like the character designs and I’m very interested in seeing where the story Can go. As for the people complaining about the character designs I understand where they’re coming from but as somebody who creates comics herself I understand the struggle and I understand that using characteristics and design choices that are familiar to you are the smartest thing that you can do. Especially if you have a contract with jump and they’re expecting another series or you’ve signed another contract and they want another series from you when you don’t have much time Because you’re working on a spin off and so many other things. Tbh I would have less of a problem with it if he hadn't done the exact same thing for Fairy Tail (from rave master). Now he has three main guys who are basically the same dude with different hair colors. I'm okay with the similarities between the characters. Like you said, he is allowed to reuse his own art style and I think he deserves it considering how he's barely taken a decent break after finishing FT. Plus, we never know if the art style will change as the story progresses, and I think that it creates a nostalgic feel to the drawing. It reminds me that FT isn't truly finished in all ways (obviously excusing the sequel)

Lots of characters in fairy tail are spinoffs of other characters from other franchises. Don't get me wrong I love that stuff and seeing the references for that anime.
