Makarov might be the best mentor in all of anime. He's also a perfect representation of human forgiveness and compassion. He doesn't forgive Gajeel completely for what he did to Levy and the others, just as he was furious that Laxus was on Teyru Island, but he's always willing to give people the benefit of the doubt so long as they accept their flaws and try to improve. Laxus became a great leader and probably one of the closest friends Mavis had at the end of her life, and Gajeel not only became one of the slayers that saved the world but has started his own family with Levy. All of that goes back around to a kind old man with a strange fashion sense and the name of a king.

I freaking loved this! Makarov had every reason to hate Gajeel and leave him to wallow in his self pity, especially given all the pain he caused Fairy Tail. But despite all that, and still making it clear that he is very and rightfully angry with him, Makarov offers Gajeel a chance at redemption, and the man took it.

@@MereImitation I mean, he became fully active again after eating fire in a way that reminds me of how people become reenergized after eating protein, so maybe? Can't give a real scientific answer to that due to fire not really having nutrients, yet it affected Natsu as if might have nutritional value of some kind. Maybe to some extent, but not entirely, perhaps. Igneel did teach him to hunt, which could imply that they still need to eat actual foods to sustain their bodies in the long term, like in real life.

This is such a great line and lesson about choice and redemption . Its not a one time act or one act of forgiveness. Its making a choice to do the right thing over and over out of selflessness. You have to make the choice and no one else can make it for you. Thats why i love Gajeel.

Makarov is truly a great man: he could have 100% killed Gajeel and it would be completely justified. The metallic monster destroyed his home and harmed those he considered his children, we all know he'd be totallly right to go full giant rage mode on Gajeel like other characters have done. But Makarov didn't just hold back his need for vengeance, he extended a hand to Gajeel because he knew the young man was misguided & now in poverty so he wants to not only offer him a better home, but a chance at a life where he can start to heal & attone for his past mistakes.

How is his narrative destroyed? Because of how well he is written up until the point at which he finally confesses everything to lift something that has been gradually built up throughout the series, demonstrating how much he has matured as a person and demonstrating that even someone like him deserves a chance at a happy family life-something he was never given as a child.

He wasn't wasted cuz his story was about finding love not getting more power. He even acknowledged during his fight against Bloodman, that the fact that he was lagging behind all the other dragonslayers used to bother him, but now all he cares about is protecting Levy and his friends. He's the first of the dragonslayers to start his own family tho.
